In a previous lesson, we learned how to find the area of an irregular shape by using the offset method to measure lengths along the shape at regular intervals, and then applying the trapezoidal rule to calculate the area. However, if it is not physically possible to measure the offset lines directly, a modified version of the offset method can be applied. This is particularly true when you want to find the surface area of a wide body of water, for instance. In such cases, it might be more feasible to indirectly obtain the lengths of the offset lines by employing the modified offset method.
