My Space, go back to the far dark corner of the interweb! You can't win people back with power tool puns. People aren't going to leave Facebook. Just accept that and stop trying so hard. It's sad really.
Dude, I love tools, especially my impact drivers and wrenches, but have never fully understood exactly how they work until I watched this video. THANK YOU! liked and subbed
I find it impressive that the materials can withstand those forces and hits over long periods of time. One would think the surfaces get destroyed in no time.
Why can't all UA-cam videos be like this? This was so concisely done, you can tell this is a no BS guy who gets work done. He should teach shop classes in schools, kids would learn a lot.
Cool video but I have no idea how I ended up here. I started off by watching Jeremy Kyle and now I've built a shed in my living room.... Thanks youtube!
It's funny you mention that. UA-cam has done a bit of a shuffle and is directing a lot of traffic away from big names and towards small channels. Many people subscribe to big channels but rarely watch them all so giving the viewer more diversity means more views for UA-cam.
I've owned/used impact guns for decades, but never really understood how they worked. Thanks to that cool cut-away you made, it's finally clear. You've destroyed one of life's little mysteries! Lol
I cannot come up with a sufficiently enthusiastic enough compliment to give you. So many people do ridiculous computer animations which really don't get the point across. Your video, from concept to execution, is so much better and more informative than all the rest combined. Thank you so much for making this. You ROCK. BTW, that adapter is the best 2 dollars that you'll ever spend on tools! I want one of those! I don't even need one, and I still want one! Cheers, sir. You stand alone at the top regarding this topic.
Great use of a modern tool such as high-speed recording, together with practical cut-away, to show exactly what's happening. Thanks for the excellent and concise demonstration :)
Great video. Concise, informative, straight to the point. Learned exactly what I was curious about. I just feel like I should apologize for that hat or something.
In one direction, yes. In the other direction, the spring will get longer. This is not how it is being done. See the first reply. There is a partial spiral that engages the hammer at 1/2 turns.
The spring is not rigidly connected to any of the components, it only compresses to store energy and release to push the hammer. The movement of the hammer up and it's rotation back down is guided by a set of grooves between the hammer and transmission output. If you can get the impact mechanism out and compress the spring completely, it should be possible to dismantle the whole thing and see the grooves.
Thank you for the video, know how the hell did youtube know I was wondering how these things work and I was going to search for it, but I never did the search!!!
Wait you are taking high speed video and you are not filming your friends getting kicked in the balls or someone blowing stuff up? I'm impressed, didn't think it was possible.
I know testicular violence is the goto for high speed video but every one else seems to have that covered. If you check out my science fair play list there are a number of other videos where I use high speed to explore physics: ua-cam.com/play/PL34A76DDE41F18A19.html
Bro, you've gained nearly 1k subs in the past 24 hrs. You're growing, because people like you, and your content. Don't trust me, trust your fans. Keep it up (and lose the fedora)!
Straight to the point and no annoying music! Awesome!
Absolutely brilliant. The best demonstration and explanation of how an impact driver works. Many thanks.

1st class example of how to be a great UA-camr!
-straight to the point
-good audio
-good lighting
-interesting
-informative
thanks!!!
+Patrick Coble Glad you liked it. I have more to come and I have had some practice.
Nick Moore where did you buy this?
That's awesome! You cut it up so we can see it without animation or a boring detailed verbal explanation. I subscribed!
Nearly 10 years later I got this recommended by UA-cam.. and I loved it! Good job!
Same.
What an impact this video creates.
It hammers out every little detail about this engineering marvel.
My Space it is quite riveting, I was bolted to the screen!
My Space, go back to the far dark corner of the interweb! You can't win people back with power tool puns. People aren't going to leave Facebook. Just accept that and stop trying so hard. It's sad really.
+My Space go back to reddit
+My Space Yeah, it really drives home how much power tools have helped the modern man wrench control from his surroundings.
tojiroh, don't encourage MySpace.
I can sleep at last...4 years I've been a wonderin' how that f'n impact works???
i am a lot older than u, this question was a lot longer for me lol
boy you must have been stupid, back then it was even easier to find shit on youtube than it is now....
Same here,
One of the smartest guys I know didn't know how these work...Now I can clue him in!
Seems Seeing Is Believing !
That's awesome. The mechanism is so simple and elegant. Thanks for doing this demo!
That was exactly what I was hunting for. That cutaway was perfect. I kinda imagined in my head that's how it worked and you have confirmed. Thanks.
I've watched many videos to understand how this works. This is the only video that made me understand exactly how it works. Thank you!

This is pure gold, and exactly what I imagine home boy is like.
Dammit man
Video is great though.
Just the comment I came for
Answers to questions I didn't even know I had. This was very interesting. Humans make amazing things.
Vs what?? Gerbils? Blue Footed Boobies?
One of the best "how it works" videos I've seen. Thanks for making it!!
Simple, but very thorough explanation. Great video
Probably the best explanation I have seen for how it all works- especially like how you have shown the interior of the mechanism and slowed it down.
Hands down the best explanation of how an impact driver works. This was my 4th and last video!! I get it now!!! Thank you
Dude, I love tools, especially my impact drivers and wrenches, but have never fully understood exactly how they work until I watched this video. THANK YOU! liked and subbed
Glad you liked it, I don't post that often but I try to keep it interesting.
I find it impressive that the materials can withstand those forces and hits over long periods of time. One would think the surfaces get destroyed in no time.
Requires a tough material for the hammer portion!
@@benjaminlagace7266 for the low low price or $2 for the finished product lol
Take 20MnCr5, harden it to 58-62 HRC it will easily withstand it for a long time
hardened steel...
A textbook definition of how every informative/educational video should be. Kudos to you and thanks
Why can't all UA-cam videos be like this? This was so concisely done, you can tell this is a no BS guy who gets work done. He should teach shop classes in schools, kids would learn a lot.
I will never again discount someone just for wearing that style of hat. Good video. Thanks.
+Pedarski Glad you liked it, I'm still surprised that no one else has a video about this.
I should do a better job of spotting such lapses in popular understanding... and do something about it. Thanks again.
Saya ingin punya itu 😁
That's cool I always wondered how an impact gun works.
Excellent tutorial. Loved the visuals. Well thought out and presented. Thanks!
+Ric Tester Glad you liked, thanks for watching.
Terrific video! Really like how you no only explained it, but then provided the cutout of the tool so that we can see it actually operate.
Thanks!
Great cutaways man ! I've always had a good idea of how an impact gun worked. But watching the mechanism working was just awesome !
Great Video. You explained how it works very early, and good narration and editing.
thx
The best demonstration that I have seen on youtube. Now, finally I understand the impact mechanism. Thumbs up!!
Such an excellent video and explanation.
Thank you for taking the time and effort to do it and you now have another subscriber.
Thanks, I try to have new stuff up as often as possible.
This is the best video explaining impact driver
Thanks Nick. Great job on the demo. Thanks for cutting up that bit for us to see inside. Very cool.
Seriously outstanding video! 😃👍. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, thank you, this was an incredibly good video, only took me 8 years to find it~
Great video. You explained it better than I could imagine. Thanks!
I am looking everywhere on the internet for the drill adapter that you show here, I can't sleep anymore until i find it.
A video from 2012 answering a question I had since forever. Thanks Nick. Appreciate it!
No problem, glad you liked it!

How's it feel going viral!?
Analytics tells me that people have watched 158 days worth of this video in 24 hours. The comments tells me I should loose the hat.
Chaos theory in action.
If you like the hat, keep the hat. Fuck the comments.
Awesome video! Use it almost daily, always wondered how it works!
A very well made video! Thanks for showing this on UA-cam.

thank you for doing this!! ive wanted to see exactly this, an impact wrench in slow motion with a cutaway revealing the mechanism. +1 to you, sir
Dude, this is the best video I've seen this year. Thanks.
Nice job, I enjoyed the way you talked.
Dude, you did an EXCELLENT JOB showing and explaining how this works...Thanks!
Glad you liked it! This is my most popular video despite the hat.
Very interesting. I bought an impact drill a few weeks ago and man is it a super help on rusted bolts. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the video Fedora Man!
Good video, I always wondered how these worked!
Great video, thank you for taking the time in producing this.
No problem, glad you liked it.
This is the best demonstration of a hammer drill or driver I've ever seen.
Nice. It's cool to finally see how one of your daily tools actually work.
+sorel93 Glad you liked it. I had been wondering for years before I made this video.
I didn’t know I wanted to learn this. Thanks
what camrea do you use it records amazingly
I use a Sony VG-20 camcorder and a Casio Ex-F1 for the slow motion.
nice! thanks for the quick reply and Thanks for making this video and relieving my curiousness towards impact drivers always always wondered.
No problem. Air drivers are a little different and I'll hopefully cover them next spring or summer.
You should!
This is a really good video! Thanks for taking the time to make it!
No problem, I'm glad you liked it.
This is a very informative video. I appreciate the sacrifice you made
to your tools and the time you spent to make this video.
But how is the rotational energy converted to lift the hammer in that first 1/4 ?
judgeomega - the driveshaft has a partial spiral that engages the hammer at 1/2 turns (it's explained in the video)
judgeomega when one end of a spring turns but the other doesn't, the spring compresses.
easy question.... if you rotate the end of the spring while holding it stand still on the other end,,, spring will get shorter in length.. ;-)

Amazingly done, chap! I learned so much about this tech in just 4 minutes. Cheers, Nick!
liked the video, liked the explanation and the slow motion footage. Thanks for sharing!
I have just one question:
Why wear a hat indoors?
It's cold in Canada.
+Nick Moore This is the first video of yours I've seen. I subscribe just because of the Trilby.
Thanks for the video, very informative
Cheers, I learn something new every day :-)
Love it. Nice straight forward video with a clear explanation. Thanks
Amazing thank you for that beautiful demonstration of how an impact wrench or driver works.
Thank you for the video, know how the hell did youtube know I was wondering how these things work and I was going to search for it, but I never did the search!!!
Great vid!
Glad you liked it
Nicely explained, well done! :-)
Great video man. It's been driving me crazy to know how impact drills worked. You did a great presentation.
+Sr Rs Thanks, glad it was helpful!
Excellent video of how these work. Thanks
You look like a very nice guy..
Of course he's nice, he's Canadian. :D
He looks so damn awkward in what hes doing :S
YOU GUYS DON'T GET THE OG COMMENT HE LOOKS AND ACTS LIKE A TYPICAL MLADY NICE GUY LMAO

Is this like internet bullying? He's a smart guy producing good stuff. You guys can fuck off.
Cool video just a tip though, loose the fedora
Learn proper English. It's 'lose'. Also I'm sure you're some kind of style master that attracts the opposite sex like mad, you keyboard expert, you.
Actually, in proper English loose as a verb means to get rid of or set free. So, Based is right.
R.J.H1978 thanks for the lawyering.
It's a Trilby, not a fedora, he needs to lose the Trilby
Quality video i like it!
Great voiceovers. Very easy to follow and learn.
Super well done, thanks. Helped me understand where the "extra kick" was coming from. Never get something for nothing in physics.
Wow, that's pretty cool. Great video and explanations!
Thanks for the breakdown. Now I know.
Great video! But why do all my canadian friends have beards AND were those hats... Im all about the beard , but the hat is what gets me.
Great video! Nice idea to cut open the device to see it work.
Respect for those who design and invent these mechanisms. Good video !
Billy Bob!! Gimme my bolt whackin gun!
link? for the "adaptor" thx
Same i would buy if i find one.
just get a used impact there pretty cheap and it will work better or search up adapter that makes drill an impact
@@Daniel-dg8hd I dont think so, that adapter looks cheap and good
@@joaolisboa7775 you don’t think an actual impact will work better?
wooow i always wondered how this works coz i use this 8hrs a day! :D
I'm glad you liked it, I wasn't sure how they worked until I made this video.
Excellent video to show the inner workings. Thanks.
After several videos, this video is where I understood it properly..... good job, thanks,
I wonder if it can remove that rusty fedora...
I won it for drinking gallons of Guinness at the local pub.
Still doesn't make it ok!
But...will it blend?

@@garyhoffmann1615 spoiler alert .
I was wondering for some time how these tools work , and by far your explanations were the best a could found on youtube !
This video is perfect. Explained several things about an impact that I always wondered about even though I've had these apart multiple times.

You need to get comfortable in front of the camera!
Yeah, this was one of the first videos I did talking straight to the camera. I still tend to use pre-recorded video and voiceovers to avoid face time.
Bro, you've gained nearly 1k subs in the past 24 hrs. You're growing, because people like you, and your content. Don't trust me, trust your fans. Keep it up (and lose the fedora)!
The had was retired years ago. I still can't believe how many people hate it.
I hate the camera and will never get comfortable around it, dont listen to these people...
Bubble Kennedy You need to grow up and sort your attitude out you dumb parrot!
Excellent explanation of how an impact driver works!
This is great, thank you so much. Perfect short informative explanation video

really good video. Thanks for sacrificing your drill attachment to show us how the impact feature on the drill works.
