I heard this song when I was 17, a few months after a Petra concert in Alabama where I gave my life to Jesus. Petra still remains my favorite Christian Rock group.
I first heard this song in the late '80s, and I've loved it ever since. The message behind it is so simple, yet powerful at the same time. Glory to God for Petra!
Oh my dad passed away not too long ago. Petra was one of his favorite bands.. I grew up on it. Ill always play it in his memory and for praising Jesus Christ!
I saw them only once...1981 Mundelin High School in Mundelin IL with a church youth group. They were the opening band for Servant.I never heard of them before that day..they get to this song and I was touched in my soul that I cried..it was cleansing. After their set ,I did get to speak to the band ..they all seemed nice...so to this almost 14 year kid at the time..I told them what I just wrote here...they appreciated that ,thanked me and that..was the day I started being a Petra fan and of some classic Christian Rock ..Thank you God for allowing Petra to be a vessel for your message.Take care all
When I started listening with intention, I ,at a young age, saw His calling. This blessed nation and genaration that I hold hope for in seeking His face😇🙏😃
Great classic from my childhood. I actually went to church where the songwriter Dave Eden and saw him sing this about 100 times almost 20 years ago. Good 'ol days!
Per Wikipedia: The Coloring Song" was written by Dave Eden. It was originally recorded by Greg X. Volz' former band, e, where Eden was a drummer. When e disbanded, Eden and fellow band member Joe Grier formed The Joyful Noise. They included e's original recording of "The Coloring Song" in a 1976 album titled No Room in the Middle. The song was the first single from Never Say Die, and became Petra's first big hit. The song reached the top of three Christian radio charts (rock, adult contemporary, inspirational), and the top five of a fourth (southern gospel). The song also became the third top Christian song of 1982.
Of all musicians/bands I have heard in my entire lifetime, this song is one of the best. It's not very hard to play musically (A flat Major), but I think it's the lyrics that really places this song in one of my favourites!
I was in my teens...I first saw them after their second album. My mother didn't want me to listen to secular music, but I had this. It activated my rock and roll button. haha joke's on her.
I was 18 when I first heard them. 1 year after Jesus regenerated my life and caused me to repent and believe. never the same, like u if you are born again
I'm from India. ( Nagaland , North- eastern part ) , we are a Predominantly Christian state and I had the privilege to attend a " John shlit " concert at my Hometown . Well , I sang this song at our local church when I was in my 9th standard . We Naga's ( term for people hailing from Nagaland , my Home state ) Owe the Americans big time for bringing the Gospel to us , an erstwhile ' Savage , Head hunting Race . ' The first missionary to us was the Lt. Rev. Edward winters Clark , or E.W Clark as we know him . Born in Duchess county , NY. God bless America.
Not a Christian, but I was only allowed to listen to Christian music as a teen when I was living with my aunt and uncle. Still have a special place for Petra's beautiful music in my heart and still own several of their albums.
This song was on the playlist when I was a DJ at a small Christian college. Early 1980’s. Brings back some really great memories. I’ve been a Petra fan since 1981.
I personally know the guy that run 3angels broadcasting radio he also has 3 Angels tv station His name is Danny and his daughters name is melody They are friends with my ex pastor at my 7day Adventist church I attended at that time and they sang at my baptism they live in west Frankfort IL
I have always thought of this song as a song for the seasons. I also enjoy THE JOYFUL NOISE rendition. Off the NO ROOM IN THE MIDDLE album which was recorded 7 years before this version. Both versions lift up the Lord and inspire.
My family would listen to this all the time when I was a kid. Funny story, when I was 6 I was allowed to get my first drum kit. I had the choice between a white or red kit, my parents said which color did I want. I immediately thought of this song and said… “Red for the color of the blood that flows! That will always stick with me!
Someone wondered why verses 2 and 4 start on the 3rd beat. It's an illusion because we drop two beats at the end of every vocal chorus, ie, 0:31. If you count straight through by fours, you will think the verses start on different beats.
Even the two slow songs on this album are good. Perfect album. Not a bad song on it. Petra is a pillar of the Christian music community. Still. Always and forever. Resurrection Band is another one. Two tent poles that all Christian bands fall under. God blessed us with music. Don’t let Satan corrupt it.
Hey, i just did research on the coloring song while downloading CDs onto network drive, the coloring song on washes whiter than LP from 1979, then 1981 Petra had Never Say Die then the two were combined in 1988 on double CD I have it love it.
@@spudmckenzie4959 this band has been around since the 70’s and have had numerous band changes. Fun fact Greg X Voltz was a pretty well known singer in those days and was ask by many (I guess the term is secular) bands to sing for them. One of which is REO Speedwagon before their singer eventually got the job. Yeah they did spit up and reunite a few times but I think they are done now.
I really like this song, but I always wondered why they changed where they start. Verses 1 and 3 start on the downbeat, while 2 and 4 start on the third beat.
I'd like to know what is that flute like instrument. It sure sounds like something live (not a synth, a wind blow can be heard) and it sounds like a portable organ or something of that sort because I can hear there is no dynamics in the sound. Maybe someone could summon Mr. Slick to enlighten us?

I knew the songwriter, Dave Eden, and had the pleasure of hearing him sing and play this on his dulcimer.
Thank you Petra for bringing comfort and encouragement to God 's family and heaven's hope message to the world.
"....that can make the love between us flow..." a perfect line.
The song came around full circle...love it!! It would be cool to hear a large choir sing this as a round

I cannot help but think that " The Coloring Song " by Petra is the closest a Christian rock band has come to embrace the sound of classic Folk rock :)
I agree! Hippie flowers for everyone :)
Sounds like Renaissance style music

Listen to their first two albums before NOTW! Really folky!
