Most people do not realize that the ukulele part was NOT performed by Steve Martin. It was actually performed by the legendary Lyle Ritz. Lyle was known primarily for two things: popularizing jazz ukulele in the U.S. during the 1950s, and as a very prolific bass player and member of the famed “Wrecking Crew” from the 1960s through the 1980s. If you are interested in playing this song exactly as performed in the film, there is a video on UA-cam by Chris Drozdowski that teaches it, but be prepared…it is meant for the more advanced player. Or a beginner if you are willing to devote a lot of time to it!
This is the first song I learned on ukulele, I believe I learned it from ukulele Mike's channel, R.I.P. I really appreciate all of you who teach ukulele here, it changed my life, I can finally make something that sounds like music on my own.
Love your tutorials Stu. I’m smiling to myself watching 6:20 knowing that if I tried to play it the whole thing would sound like a z chord 😂 thanks for inspiring us to push ourselves and learn new things. Because when we find something challenging and learn new things we can come back to them and they’re not so hard.
such an awesome song, thanks Stu. For those who like to practice by playing along, the version by Eddie Vedder and Cat Power is in this key and their sweet duet vocals sound just a tad better than me singing it LOL.
Such a beautiful song. I’m so glad you included all those precise chord variants. So many ukulele charts are inclined to reduce the niceties to make it easier to play.
Cheers Stu! I tried this tune a while back using a couple of existing tutorials/tabs but I'm really enjoying some of the chord changes here, something to push myself with and end up with a better sounding arrangement!
You rock Matthew. I love this tune and there are so many versions online. I have distilled parts of all my favourites to make this lesson. Thanks for getting in touch friend. or as we Austrailians say Mate!
Finally! Someone who really teaches the song using more than just the basic chords. I've been looking for a while. Thank you kindly good sir.
God thank you for noting the film being a half step down and also the nuances of Martin's playing!

Nice song pick, had the tune in my ear all day. Excellent lesson, seemed a bit daunting at first but achievable with a bit of practice
Many thanks

Let me know if you find out!
