I love the way Jared explains it, all of his podcasts. And he's so humble about it and you can tell it's about us, not about himself. And I don't mind when he goes 2-3 hours. I just feel pulled into the time period that he's teaching on.

Oh, Brother Halverson! Thank you for loving our Savior, Jesus Christ, and thank you for opening my eyes, heart, and understanding. I am so excited to understand Isaiah better this week then the last time I read the Book Of Mormon! What a powerful message about grace and works! What a much needed reminder of scrupulosity and toxicity! I always have incredible aha moments with you, but today brought me to my knees. Brother Halverson and any listener that may get this, I used to quit callings. I NEVER turned one down, but I often quit them. I quit them because I would go with faith that I was called to grow and learn the calling, but I would hit a wall! I didn't realize that right around that corner was the "trial of my faith" I thought I was failing and bringing others down with me. Today I have a different look at it all. I understand my imperfectness with empathy and knowing I will keep going because...."Wax on. Wax off!" Practice will make me better and my efforts to strive to be my best will be enough. I will never quit a calling because of not being enough ever again. Thank you for being such a compassionate, intelligent, kind, loving teacher. Thank you for caring enough to get into our heads and hearts and finding us to take your hand to the promised land. You are so loved! Short dive or deep dive, you have another joyful student. ❤

Jared, I needed this clarification on works and faith. I did not know how confused I was about it and why living the gospel was not bringing the joy I had before my baptism when I did trust in Christ to lead me along, I got lost in works and when I could no longer work in the same ways, I could not understand the point of my life. I look forward now to living with more joy, Thanks

One thing that really helped me understand what works are for was a personal revelation that taught me that mortality is the place where we practice becoming like Jesus Christ. That helps ease the minds of those of us who have “test anxiety”, where we are so worried about failing that it’s all we can focus on. But if we think of it as practice, that helps ease some of the worry. Because practice makes perfect, but we probably won’t get there in this life, and if we do, it is only through God’s grace that it happened. So if we decide we’re never going to practice or we’re not going to try very hard to practice, then we won’t get very far. God’s grace isn’t magic. It can’t transform us from wicked to righteous in the blink of an eye. But it can transform us from guilty to innocent in the blink of an eye.
The difference between wickedness and righteousness isn’t the presence or absence of sin. It’s who we turn to after we sin. Do we listen to Satan who tells us we’ll never measure up? Or do we listen to Christ? He tells us, “Try again, and if it feels too hard, let me help you. That’s what I’m here for is to help you get better and better.” Keep practicing, brothers and sisters. You’ll get there if you trust in Christ.

For this is life eternal to know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom Thou has sent. So it would seem then,,that living the Commandments is a good way to get to know our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ - it also helps us to be like them.
Also we will discover the ways of happiness. The Lord's Commandments are wonderful for many reasons. His yoke is light and His burden is easy. And by keeping His Commandments, we also show The Lord that we love Him.

Wowzers!!! Thank you for the explanation. So helpful and insightful.
One of the things the Lord has asked me to do is to sit with Him and learn of Him. As I have sat listening, reading along, with paper and pen in hand, the Lord has opened my understanding on the concepts He wanted to teach me.
There have been times when He has given me particular images that don’t fully make sense until later on. This was one of those moments. It’s all based on perspective and how we look at it.
“Purify your motives and your attitude will change. Your perspective on work will be sanctified.” LOVE IT!!!
God has told me that I had made a pact with those on the other side that I would do their work for them and to keep this in mind as I went to the temple.
Now, I have a better understanding of what that was meant to do, and it’s also a pattern that I can use to help reframe, or “purify” my motives. 🤗

I was intrigued by the word "after" when you talk about "we are saved by grace, after all we can do". Thanks for the perspective of after as despite. I looked up the word after in the 1828 dictionary and if we consider "all" as a noun and "after" a preposition, we could apply the 3. meaning that states "in pursuit or search of". I like this option too because we are "in persuit of" doing our part of returning to Heavenly Father (all we can do) and because we cannot do that by ourselves(we are fallen), then His grace will be what saves us.

I appreciate all of the time and effort and obvious years of sincere study you have put into this & your willingness to share. This is so deep & applies to EVERYTHING. I am a leader for our young men and have struggled to understand the new Come Follow Me paradigm of teaching as well as our new youth program. It felt so confusing. Where did all of our check boxes go? What about our merit badges? Why is this CFM lesson not going as deep or specific as I am used to?
Its because there is a new way and that new way is 100% inspired. We are to search these things out on our own and make the lessons and programs into what they deserve to be WITHOUT check boxes and badges telling us every little step we aught to take. (the old law has been fulfilled & taught & prepped us for the NEW!) Using our agency is essential. THANK YOU.

My own personal thought on 2 Nephi 25:23. After all we can do means qualifying with the help of the Lord to receive his full gift of grace. Helaman 5:11 says Jesus is given power to save us because of repentance. If we won't repent, and believe in him and go through this journey of faith and repentance then he can't save us cause we will remain in our sins. He helps us believe, he helps us repent, and then he saves us at the end after he was the means of helping us qualify to receive his grace.

So when someone asks what are the works for? I would answer they are the deliberate practice in our journey to become like our Father in Heaven. His work and glory is for us to become like him and so works are how we practice. We don’t have to be perfect we just have to keep trying and following his guidance.

2 Nephi 25:29 Reminds me of the group in Lehi's dream in 1 Nephi 8:30 who "fell down" at the Tree of Life to partake of the fruit. I always wondered, "Why you would 'fall down' to partake of the fruit of the Tree of Life"? I found out why In 1 Nephi 11:24 when Nephi sees the "Tree of Life" who is Jesus Christ. In 1 Nephi 11:24, Nephi sees other people seeing Jesus and they "fall down at Jesus' feet and worship Him." So How do we partake of the fruit of the Tree of Life and stay at the Tree? We live a life of bowing before Jesus and worshipping Him. Now look at 2 Nephi 25:29: "Ye must bow down before Him, and worship Him with all your might, mind and strength, and your whole soul; and IF ye do this, ye shall in nowise be cast out." If we live our lives worshipping Him, Loving Him, reconciling our will to His, Then through His Grace and Love we will never leave the Tree of Life to be lost in "forbidden paths" that lead into the great and spacious building. Living a life of true worship, daily bowing ourselves completely before Jesus Christ is the most important thing I can do to stay at the Tree of Life with Jesus so that Jesus' love and grace can bring me Home. :)

Nephi wrote chapter 25 to be plain and easy to understand, yet we still try to complicate what is plain. Verse 23 says, "We know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do." Christ himself said it this way in 3 Nephi 12 vs. 20, "Therefore come unto me and be ye saved; for verily I say unto you, that except ye shall keep my commandments, which I have commanded you at this time, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven."

  • @jeffegan9685

While I enjoyed the conversation of grace and "after all we can do".I think that thiis grace/works comparison is a very modern concern and not at all what Nephi was trying to write. I feel Nephi's take on this is very different. We often get stuck in thinking that the end of verse 23 is the end of his statement... but Nephi didn't put the verses in, those are a modern construction. Verse 24 starts with AND (meaning the last thought is not completed yet). Remember this is going from Generation to Generation of Nephi"s seed (vs 22) and is written to his children and brethren (and of course to us). So the concern on Nephi's mind is that if we are saved by Grace, then why would they need to keep the law of Moses? (verses 24-30 are all about why they should still keep the law) so "And notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law of Moses.
Furthermore, if you look at verse 23/24 as a sort of Chiasmus
We labor diligently to write - ( to generations, to our children to our brethren)
    To believe in Christ
    To be reconciled to God
it is by Graced we are saved (salvation is a type of reconciliation to God through Christ's Grace)
After all we can do (after all the preaching and writing about Christ we can do... the generations and our children and brethren,, they will then Know how salvation comes and to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. 26 "...we talk of Christ, we rejoice... we preach... we prophesy... we write (or simply "all we do")... Why ?? so that they will know grace through Christ or in other words. " a remission of their sins"
Don't read vs 23 out of context... Christ's grace is a free gift, given. D&C 88:33 asks what we are going to do with it. Use the gift and live. Choose Life and Liberty and happiness by allowing the atonement of Christ to "make us a saint" as we "yield to the enticings of the Holy Ghost". Just because Grace is a free gift, does not mean it is passive and we just radically and instantaneously transform. It is something that through it and therefore by it, we become. Yielding one small particle of our souls to God at a time, until at last his image is in our countenance.

For those who believe in the true Jesus, they are given the gift of faith, the gift is from God. Jesus died on the cross, that sacrifice created the way to receive His will. We who believe in Jesus Christ have His grace through His will. We are given His righteousness, knowledge, wisdom, love discernment, etc. You can only obtain this grace if you believe in the uncreated Jesus, not the Jesus who was supposedly born to a god and a mother god in heaven, you must believe in the divine God, Jesus Christ, who is the Alpha and the Omega, the eternal divine God.

I've listened to the corresponding podcast several times. Thank you for your insights! I do have a question, about how the upper degrees of glory (celestial and terrestrial) fit into the conversation about 'grace after all we can do'? It seems that there are levels of glory based on how reconciled we are with Christ (which go beyond grace)? If this is the case then it seems like the wrong interpretation of Nephi's verse "saved after all we can do", is accurate? I'm just trying to understand. Maybe the Nephites didn't know about the degrees of glory?

Not sure, I totally understand the difference between the savior, showing the wounds in his hands and feet to the Jews, at the mount all of olives and thus convincing them that he is the Christ, and yet Isaiah is saying that these words meaning the book of Mormon would be what would convince them.

    • @disciplesofjesuschrist2026
      @disciplesofjesuschrist2026 3 місяці тому +1

It will take more than wounds in the hands and feet and side to convince the Jews to believe in Jesus Christ. It will because of a remnant of the Jews who await the return of the Messiah who have believed on His words (New Testament and Book of Mormon) which will convince them that He is the true Messiah as the Spirit has witnessed to them of His WORD. After the Apostle Thomas doubted, the Lord told him, more blessed are those who have not seen and believed who are greater than those who have believed on sight.
