Yes , probably knowing full well it would be a hit . Most pop rock groups , unlike some of the more esoteric driven solo artists , seek fame and fortune - contrary to what they say publicly during their early years . Some just use different guises in their effort to get where they want to be .

These guys wanted to start doing harder stuff so when the record label wanted more "Happy Together" type songs they out of spite turned HT "upside down" (their words) and the label released it and it became their biggest song! Lucky for us, they were locked into the bubble-gum stuff.
+rick charles "Bubblegum"? That kind of music was "Top 40". Seriously, you should check out the album THE TURTLES PRESENT THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS (which featured this song). Great album! Each track was credited to a fictitious band, like "the Crossfires" (which really was the name of that band before they became "the Turtles" in 1965), "the Bigg Brothers", Raul & the US Teens", "Nature's Children", "the Fabulous Dawgs", etc...
These guys were so lovely they made a great sound of the 60s ,This divine classic still looms large in my hits ,, What a beno we had xx such happy times and memories lol Jane x💗🧡💛💚💜🤎🖤❤🧡
Bonzo T Alonzo I'm 63 and I love the time I grew up in. Norman, OK, a college town, OU football was in its glory days, hippies everywhere. Our parents were thinking the world was coming to an end! Now, I get to tell my kids about Woodstock, the sexual revolution, kids being carried out of school on a bad trip from LSD, all the pot even on the high school campus in one particular bathroom at any given time. Guys protesting cause they couldn't buy beer but they were drafting them and sending them to Vietnam to kill and be killed. The music especially was good, though. We saw so many transitions in a short period of time. A person had their choice of so many styles of music and they were all great. Sometimes on a trip my husband and I will turn Our satellite radio to an oldies station and still sing every word and talk about what we were doing before we met. Of course, growing up in a college town, I had him beat. He was raised in northern OK on a farm in a small town. That had its own charm and great memories. But the music, the music is our common thread.
The Turtles and their classic "Elenore" from their 1968 album, Battle of the Bands". They understood what good pop is all about- great harmonies, catchy songs, and unpretentious fun. More pop stories on.
This for me is one of the best pop songs ever, three minutes of pure pop joy. Howard and Mark. Invest the song with a Wagnerian grandeur. Its a masterpiece.
I never got to see who was singing when I was young. I'm now 58. The two lead people are so opposite. What fun to see this. Thanks TurtlesHappyTogether!
I am 58 as well! I somehow managed to see them at a reunion concert at The Beacon Theater in NYC in 1987 (I think). They were so great--just hamming it up like they were on the video and having a great time.
I lived in Southern California as a teen in the 60's. The Turtles, yes, Mark and Howard (the big hair!) .....were the playingest local band ever. We became loyal fans before they had a national hit. It was nothing but good times and music. They were/are just a fun, interesting and lively in person as they appear on YT.
No modern pop music can measure up to this. The "pride and joy etc." had the record company begging them to remove it. It makes the song! Had they not been raped by a record company contract, they would have gone on to bigger and greater things. They were banned for decades from using their own band name or even singing the songs they composed. The same thing happened to John Fogerty of CCR.
You got a thing about you I just can't live without you I really want you Elenore near me Your looks intoxicate me Even though your folks hate me There's no one like you Elenore really Elenore gee I think you're swell And you really do me well You're my pride and joy et cetera Elenore can I take the time To ask you to speak your mind Tell me that you love me better I really think you're groovy Let's go out to a movie What do ya say now, Elenore can we? They'll turn the lights way down low Maybe we won't watch the show I think I love you, Elenore, love me Elenore, gee I think you're swell And you really do me well You're my pride and joy, et cetera Elenore, can I take the time To ask you to speak your mind? Tell me that you love me better One more time! Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah-hah Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah-hah-hah
Yeah, High School music. I used to drive to and from school in my 1960 Chevy Nova listening to such as this on the AM radio (you could buy AM/FM radios in those days; but no stations on FM yet). Listening to this takes me back to another long ago time; I can even smell things from the past, like coal burning. Today, we know all about the bands, but back then we knew nothing but which song matched which artist. No internet, no cell phones, a lot of TV was still B&W, and cable TV was still years away. Unless you lived in a city, you didn't even have broadcast TV. You rarely even knew what your favorite band looked liked.
I first heard this song when I was 9 years old; I thought, and still do, that it was the greatest song ever recorded. I am now 61 and still sing along to it when it is played on the radio.
When I hear that song and I see them, something in me becomes a ghost... It hurts, enjoys and cries. A melancholy runs through my memories, and I see the sun shine brightly, under the calm of those quiet and dreamy years... where people were good. Eleonora Rilley.
Nice song and ownthat was very popular then. They had a way fo singing that somehow reached me and I could feel identified with. And now nearly fifty years later I still like to hear them sing.
Incredible and extremely underrated band with incredible songs - and John Barbata was and I assume still is a fantastic drummer - back in The Turtle days he was ground breaking, one of a kind - every Turtle track he played on was a thrilling and tasty drum part.
Flo & Eddie, man this brings back memories, I would not trade being young in the 60- 70’s for anything. What a great time to be young and free. Kids today don’t know what real freedom is.
This was a fine love song ,i do believe it was rather sexy in a nice way ,,,,,these guys were great singers i still get goose lumps every time i hear this very fine 60s classic ,, what a splendid era to live through ,those were the days lol

What an original lyric! If you say it to your partner, they should understand.
Best lyric "You're my pride and joy.....et cetera"
That lyric is why I so love this song.
It rates right up there with America’s “for there ain’t no one to give us pain “
"I really think you're groovy, let's go out to a movie" Classic 😂

they sound so good for the most part of being a live performance --------- now that's talent!
I was two years old and LOVE this
This is proof the 60's 70's best music ever
The best thing about this is drummer Johny Barbata.
really drives the band brilliant
It's the combination.these guys harmonies are awesome in all their songs.
YES! He’s crashing and smashing yet also holding together that WILD sound!
I heard this song being sung at the Trevi Fountain in Rome, 1967. It was iconic there....and it is iconic now. I love Flo and Eddie the most!
I'm 60 and always loved the beat and tempo to this song. The more I age the more grateful I am to have lived during the time that I have .
+LeAnn Cottman im
+Katy B I'm 62 and I love the sixth yss music
Katy
I'm 62 and hope we get this on the other side... nice to see It's Pat! trade the french horn for a cymbal...
The Florescent Leech and Eddie.
THEY WERE FABULOUS! THANKS
Love The Turtles for ages!!!! Another classic 60s groove!!!
He's a beast with the tambourine. Who wouldn't want a bandmate like him?
No modern pop music can measure up to this. The "pride and joy etc." had the record company begging them to
remove it. It makes the song! Had they not been raped by a record company contract, they would have gone on to
bigger and greater things. They were banned for decades from using their own band name or even singing
the songs they composed. The same thing happened to John Fogerty of CCR.
Another great 60's song for singing in the shower. No matter what you're voice sounds like it's great to let rip with the chorus from this one.
great song... drummer rocks
Totally underrated song. One of the best ever!😊
You got a thing about you
I just can't live without you
I really want you Elenore near me
Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you Elenore really
Elenore gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy et cetera
Elenore can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better
I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
What do ya say now, Elenore can we?
They'll turn the lights way down low
Maybe we won't watch the show
I think I love you, Elenore, love me
Elenore, gee I think you're swell
And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time
To ask you to speak your mind?
Tell me that you love me better
One more time!
Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah-hah
Elenore, gee I think you're swell, ah-hah-hah
really good
Oh boy like this song
One of the very best groups of 60's! Still sounds fresh and groovy.👍🎸🎼🎶🎵😇
MAN... the drummer John Barbata is just KILLER!! You can't take your eyes of his effortless genius on the kit!!
When I hear that song and I see them, something in me becomes a ghost... It hurts, enjoys and cries. A melancholy runs through my memories, and I see the sun shine brightly, under the calm of those quiet and dreamy years... where people were good.
Eleonora Rilley.
I loved the Turtles. They were a really good band!
This is a fantastic live performance of a killer late-'60s hit. Well done, gentlemen.
A stunning live version.
Nice song and ownthat was very popular then. They had a way fo singing that somehow reached me and I could feel identified with. And now nearly fifty years later I still like to hear them sing.
A haunting romantic pop song - a fav since 3rd gr! Such great songs.
I could watch the drummer play drums all day long!
Incredible and extremely underrated band with incredible songs - and John Barbata was and I assume still is a fantastic drummer - back in The Turtle days he was ground breaking, one of a kind - every Turtle track he played on was a thrilling and tasty drum part.
This song gets stuck my head every time I hear it.
Flo & Eddie, man this brings back memories, I would not trade being young in the 60- 70’s for anything. What a great time to be young and free. Kids today don’t know what real freedom is.
What's not to love about these guys! Pure genius!
This song...and I cherished 60s music...was always special to me. My personal no. 1 song of the decade.
This was a fine love song ,i do believe it was rather sexy in a nice way ,,,,,these guys were great singers i still get goose lumps every time i hear this very fine 60s classic ,, what a splendid era to live through ,those were the days lol
I have this fab song on 45 vinyl - it never gets old (unlike me!)
I love this group and these lyrics. The lyrics are funny and ironic. That was the trademark sound of the Turtles. Those guys were funny.
Such a beautiful song. Makes me want to walk through a sunny meadow wearing a floaty dress and straw hat. 💐💚
1968. Senior year of high school. A great song by an underappreciated group. Great memories !
I love this song and the 60s music ! I was 9 when this song first came out in 1965 !
Patti i like your comment , this very fine classic belongs in a splendid era , the 60s was some thing else , its music was so diverse , what a choice we had x i have always adored this lovely song , i always wanted to be called Ellener xx lol Jane x🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
