The main meaning behind the lyrics was a response to the media criticizing the way she looks. There were many tabloid stories during her previous tour about her having gained weight, with photoshopped images of her on stage. But it's also a part of the symbiotic relationship that all pop stars have with the press. Saying how she would fall apart without them, and therefore she will allow them to do what they what with her body, she'll make music about it, and thus continuing that symbiosis. There's also the metaphor of giving her body in a relationship to make the lyrics more relatable.
This song should have been a smash! Honestly the R Kelly version was really good too but the lyrics were poorer Christina recorded her part of this version at the end of 2013 which was a part written by lady gaga in the original solo version of the song. R Kelly was actually added almost in the last minute to the album version. Something she regretted later but yeah there were so many conflicts within her team at this time
He mentioned Beautiful, I'm wondering if he heard the other STRIPPED (2002) singles though, 'Fighter' or 'The Voice Within' maybe a starting suggestion. ;)
It was really great to hear these two sing together. I hated R Kelly even before the news dropped, so I’m actually happy for multiple reasons that Christina replaced him. Her voice is amazing, and she and Lady Gaga sound so good together. I’m very glad you went with this version and ignored the other one.
Probably my favorite Gaga song of all time. That main synth is incredibly THICK and the 80s vibes are amazing. The melody is also incredibly catchy and the lyrics are so multifaceted. It’s about her relationship with the press and how they can do everything they want with her image but they’ll never own her artistry and creativity. It’s also about how the fact that she’s giving permission to a man to do what he pleases with her body doesn’t mean he can have access to any other aspect of her life. The problem with the original song is that R Kelly’s inclusion made the meaning of the song come off as really creepy and rapey. And while I believe it was intended to give the song yet another angle (you might’ve done what you wanted with my body, but I won’t give you the power to ruin any other aspect of my life) it was overall a poor choice that was in very bad taste. Christina’s version is way more true to the original meaning of the song and also adds this angle of sisterhood. Gaga and Xtina were pitted against each other for years by the media and they allowed them to create a rivalry where there wasn’t any. By making this version of the song they’re effectively setting the record straight and telling the press “no matter how much you try we won’t let you turn us into enemies”. The fact that Christina and Gaga have gone through similar things also makes the song more powerful. Overall, in my opinion this version is the ultimate version of the song.
As others have said the general theme of the song is about when you become a celebrity your body belongs to the entire world to do and say as they please (he's spoken about this in interviews). The first verse and choruses are basically her sticking it to the media who trash talk her appearance constantly. The second verse in the lyrics you read is R Kelly's lyrics. In the non-R Kelly version she's talking about how when she's on stage her body belongs to her *fans*. When she's talking about how her bones hurt on stage, but she pushes through because her body belongs to her fans when she's on stag. It's tied in nicely at the end when she says "do what you want with my body, WORLD. Help me now". I'm so glad the R Kelly version was deleted. His lyrics made the song about partying and lifestyle. There was actually the original solo version that she recorded *first*, then R Kelly jumped on last minute, then she performed the original version of the song at The Voice with Christina, and just released this version with Christina for fun after the show (which is probably why some people say it doesn't sound as 'finished') Also fun fact: Lady Gaga was picked up at a young age by Christina Aguilera's vocal coach when Christina was already mega famous :)
You’re not missing much with the other version (just some eh eh’s and ‘turn the mic up’ in the intro and the different 2nd verse), One thing I did like about that version was the “..laying the cut like, we don’t give a FUUUUUUU…..” Heading into the second chorus, but this was great too, the live on The Voice US performance (as pictured on the single cover) was interesting. Only 3 left! One tip is that ARTPOP (the song) is part of the long G.U.Y. (Artpop Film) video, so Either it or Applause next I’d suggest before G.U.Y. (long video version) to cap off. ;)
You should react to partynauseous too. It was recorded for the album but for some reason left off, and used on every date of the tour. Its her most experimental unusual track.
I loveeeee this song, and your reactions too ofc 🤭. This song was huge deal for gaga cause she wrote it about the time she was doing bed rest after her hip injury and surgery and she couldn't even watch TV without hearing people talking about how her career was over and she may never walk or dance again. We know performing is her life, and until that moment "she had never been without performing, even a day" (her actual words ) that's why "then you print some shit that makes me wanna scream." I think it must've been infuriating to see all those people talking about her like that when she didn't even know either if she would ever be able to perform again
While R Kelly is an awful person, the original version of the song with him is still a banger and the best version. Such a shame he ruined a good song. Also, Gaga gave one of her best live performances to this song at the 2013 American Music Awards.
i prefer the solo version honestly, it's like they put christina's vocals over the track and that's it 😅 the solo version is better produced, i like it more

I would love you reacted some Mariah Carey stuff
Someone requested 'A No No' last year over on Patreon. I'd like to see him do some of the stuff from THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI album (2005). ;)
EDIT: actually it was one that did get on YT, can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/LZX93oEKUIU/v-deo.html
Technically, this is a remix of the song. The original featured R K*ll*y but was deleted from all platforms after the documentary controversy.
The Gaga solo versión is better
