Brazil isn’t that bad. A multiracial society with some flaws no different to the US. Their passport is also pretty good. Getting Brazilian citizenship in a few years if they’re claim is accepted will make their life easier. If they still desire to live abroad at least they’ll have their new country to care for them.

They didn't else they would be dead. Drinking a cup of seawater dehydrates you something like equivalent of a day without water, and humans can survive about 3 without water.
They probably drank so little. It was 3 days without food or water. It wouldn't have been fun, but they easily could have survived it. I bet if they had to go any longer drinking seawater they would have died though. Only worked because of the 3 day period.

That rudder is pretty high above calm water, so outside of a storm they aren't getting swept up by a wave. It sounds like they brought some food and water, but not enough. They're in the tropics (closer to the equator than Florida), so hypothermia isn't likely. You can live without water for 4 days (3 days is a conservative estimate), and mixing seawater and freshwater might be a valid survival strategy. Even if this story is exaggerated, the "that was rough, I'm never doing it again" sentiment is likely accurate. I'd at least want a decent story to tell at bars if I went through that.
