Got to love when conservatives try to bend 1984 into a criticism of the left and at the same time having no clue Orwell already wrote a book that actually was criticizing the left called Animal Farm. Just proves they don't actually read anything or know anything about Orwell
Yes, it's those 0.011% of percent of socially-excluded people who have no major political/economic influence and who are harassed constantly. It's them who have oppressed the majority! Let's settle this and take their rights and power away that they don't have!
It left your body, entered mine and then yanked my soul out as well. With that „yanked“ being more of an exchange of bewildered glances before we both ascended into… wherever we‘re going
There's absolutely no way these people actually believe what they're saying; they just know that dumb people will lap it up and they'll make a bunch of money because of it. Yeah, the people in 1984 needed the guy who teargassed a bunch of middle-aged women who were peacefully protesting for the sole purpose of taking a picture of himself holding a bible that wasn't his in front a church he didn't attend and led a fascist march on the capital to overturn a democratic election. It's legitimately scary how dumb a lot of people are.
His supporters see him as someone who ignores social rules put in place and therefore see him as someone who would go against the social rules put in place in 1984. Ironic, though, because those against him see him as someone who would be in support of the 1894 government
@@shadowcween7890 It's staggering to me that people don't see the parallels between Trump and Big Brother. Or that Trumps rallies so closely reflect the Two-Minute Hate. Or that Trump could proclaim that 2+2=5 and the Party would affirm it.

They’d say he’s “wittily commenting on the subjectivity of truth when presented by the mainstream media” or something like that; when he was in office, a lot of right-wing pundits broke their backs trying to legitimise Trump’s brain farts as some sort of performance art. His whole base seems incapable of acknowledging that he’s a pretty dumb guy.
remember when o’Brien yelled “YOU’RE CANCELLED!!” to Winston’s face at the climax of the book and then proceeded to ignore him with all his friends, leading to Winston being officially Oppressed™️? That really says a lot about society.
Man if only they bothered to do their research: “Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.” - George Orwell
I've got good news for Orwell, the US is already a democratic socialist nation. I might caution him as well, there's no reason democracies can't be totalitarian, all it takes is a majority of people to vote for it.
Please stop fawning over Orwell. He was a snitch who made lists of Communists, gay people, and black civil rights leaders and gave dossiers on these people to the British secret service. He called fucking Paul Robeson "anti-white" in the dossier. For a British man who had been a policeman in the British Raj, who'd never been to, wasn't familiar with, and didn't listen to people from the Soviet Union, he really tried to say that defending against "Stalinism" in the super anti-Communist British Empire under Winston Churchill was the pinnacle of intellectual honesty and bravery. We are beyond this loser who wrote one decent dystopian novel and a horrible revisionist children's story about the Soviet Union. Find new authors. Read Wretched of the Earth, discuss Pedagogy of the Oppressed or hell, just read better novels. I dunno your taste but try Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
I've spent the last year of my life researching George Orwell. I've written several college level papers about the man and his work. But only today did I understand that 1984 is not meant to be a general warning about totalitarianism, and is instead what happens when I can't say the N-word on Twitter.
While humorous, your example is actually nonsensical if you think about it. Why can’t totalitarianism also encompass not being able to say the N-word on twitter? These two things are very far from being mutually exclusive.
@@joma5721 THe thing is. Yes it won't get better with Biden. But I know that it won't get worse like under Trump. Biden is Status Quo. Trump is Dumpsterfire. See it like that. Biden is a kick in your nuts. But Trump is a bullet to your head. No clue why people think this is comparable.
“We are literally burning books. Well, not literally but we are figuratively burning books. I mean embracing a wider demographic variety in our authors is basically that. Mostly. Try not to think about it too much. I sure haven’t!” - basically Dave Rubin.
fun fact, the first big Nazi book burning was to destroy the research of Magnus Hirschfeld, a sexologist who was one of the first advocates for homosexual and trangender people.
He said it's the modern version of burning books. Like it's impossible to literally burn books in the modern day for some reason, so they have to resort to this instead.
The Nazis burned books about communism and gender science among other things, but the only part people like Dave Rubin remembers is 'they burned books' so he can act like anyone being asked to change their behaviour is in direct lineage with those persecuted by the Third Reich. In 1933, the Nazis destroyed Hirschfield's Institute for Sex Research, erasing at the time Europe's biggest catalogue of LGBT+ research. Now, we have conservatives comparing pronoun corrections to doublethink and reading recommendations to those very book burnings, and there's something so impure about it.
It's really stupid whenever any form of progressive social change comes about, and conservatives tend to compare it to the Nazis, oftentimes bringing up the book burnings despite the fact that the Nazis weren't exactly burning books discussing the value of the traditional nuclear family unit. One of the most famous pieces of footage of their book burnings is actually footage of them burning books from what was then Germany's most prevalent and respected LGBT research center, which destroyed thousands of pages on what was supposedly then revolutionary research on LGBT identities and the experiences of the people in those communities.
Or that doublethink is being ideologically consistent on respecting other people and not like, considering yourselves the bastions of religious morality when your leadership just won't stop cheating on their wives
@@THECHI7LDUDE22 No, because the Internet forums are private entities. What Conservatives want is for the government to tell private entities what they can and cannot moderate on their own platforms. I don't like how cancel culture is used by conservatives. That said I wonder what planet people live on when they say it's not a problem. I hear so many ordinary people who feel uncomfortable with it. They are not political or even conservative, they just know that they shouldn't speak. Civil discussion is extremely difficult on many issues and it is driven to a large degree by attempts of people the left to malign people in totally insane ways. A man was fired for speaking Chinese for Christ sake. And he apologised. That is Orwellian, I'm sorry. That said I think Conservatives are fucking hypocrits. When they banned books, actually banned them.
@@drts6955 I agree with you. Cancel culture can be harmful, but the examples you provided are anecdotal, and that's the thing. The key word here is "culture" When people say cancel culture isn't real they mean that its not a culture-wide phenomenon. It's not a widespread epidemic that is spreading and causing people to lose their jobs at a drastically higher rate. Also, people have been losing their jobs to public outcry for a very long time--long before the 'woke' teens conqured Twitter. Think of former president LBJ and how the public pressured him to not run for a second term bc of how he handled Vietnam. Or senator McCarthy calling people commies and making other senators lose their job. Or the Dixie Chicks and how they were banned from playing at concerts and radio stations just for disavowing the Iraq war. This stuff isn't new at all. Now look at rape culture. Rape culture is real because *everyday* women and men are being raped and sexually assaulted. It's an actual problem that people like me and you face--and thus, it's something we actually fear. Which ones more likely? You go to work and worry about being canceled or you rush to your car--key between your fingers, because you're worried someone might hurt you?
As someone who has read 1984, there's no way you could read the book and come to the conclusion that it's criticising bottom-up social change. You'd have to shoehorn that in through a right-wing ideological lens and pretend large amounts of the book don't exist.
To compare the entire book to cancel culture etc completely simplifies the book, but I don’t think you need a right wing ideological lens to see some similarities with what the left do now and some similarities with what the right do now

There's a saying in physics that _"2+2=5, for especially large values of 2."_ It's a demonstration of precision and the lack thereof on measurements. If I may borrow an observation from Innuendo Studios, most people have a basic kindergarten level morality which conservativism kinda clashes with. So yeah, there is a lot of jumping through mental hoops and reinforcing those thought patterns needed to maintain that worldview.
Isn’t cancellation what conservatives are always praising the free market for? If you don’t like the way a particular business operates then the market will decide they shouldn’t be able to operate?
Yes that's right and that's why it's up to them to stop complaining and set up their own CNN and NBC etc. We might see things called (say) Facebank and Chatter as unrestricted speech alternatives. They could sink or swim on their merits (if they own their own servers).
Conservatives believe the rules don’t apply to them. That’s for the plebs after all. Free speech for example is their right to say what they like when they like to who they like, it is not your right to criticise them for it in any way.

In a world where (systematic) racism has been redefined to be any disparity between racial groups and anti-racism is eliminating that disparity it means taking (or giving) to someone based on their race alone, and yes anti-racism (as the term has been manipulated) is racism. I agree that most randos on the internet don't understand the nuances of fascism as a political ideology, but it's one of those terms that is easier to misuse if thrown at left-leaning people. As fascism is an explicitly far-right ideology, if someone calls a right-wing conservative a fascist, there's at least the possibility that they are fascist or fascist-leaning. If someone calls a left-wing liberal a fascist, it's patently absurd because fascism is on the opposite end of the political spectrum and the ideologies are essentially in opposition.

"They're banning books - 1984" Me from Britain: "Yes the right wing Conservative Government is banning books in school. Including 1984 - because it's anti-capitalist" Your point?????
Mikhail G Animal Farm is criticizing the Soviet Government. Under socialism all kinds of corruption happens as can be seen currently in Venezuela. Normally under capitalism the people who become rich are people like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates who invent a product everyone wants and people voluntarily hand over their money to get that product that only that person knows how to make. Under socialism the people who become rich are the political elites. In Venezuela Hugo Chavez' daughter is a billionaire. This in a country where people are killing and eating their pets and also zoo animals. How did she get rich? Did she invent the iPhone? Facebook? Microsoft Windows? No. This is tax money that has been extracted by force from private citizens under law and threat of imprisonment. So Hugo Chavez' daughter has collected this tax money from people who have worked hard to earn it, whereas Steve Jobs gets his money from people who voluntarily hand it over to get an IPhone. Not too mention that the bureaucracy and degree of regulation is so high that to get anything done politicians need to be bribed. So this corruption that happens under socialism is what George Orwell is making fun of in Animal Farm.

Or senator McCarthy calling people commies and making other senators lose their job. Or the Dixie Chicks and how they were banned from playing at concerts and radio stations just for disavowing the Iraq war. This stuff isn't new at all.

@@robfromvan I don't think Orwell had a hate boner towards socialism seeing as how he was a demsoc for most of his life.
@@robfromvan you know he was a socialist right
I was so glad they were getting to the point and then Rubin hit the “trump is the new anti-politician”, and I hit the fattest eye roll
They came within *inches* of actually getting the book, then took a sharp U-turn at the last second.
An incredible example of doublethink really
So does nobody else remember that part in 1984 where Winston reads a communist book and it inspires him to rebel against the government?? Where history is described in terms of class struggle and Winston thinks about how, if only the "proles" would band together and rise up, they could easily defeat Big Brother?? Does nobody else remember this??
"If there was hope, it must lie in the proles"
i dont think it was meant to be communist exactly as orwell was opposed to communist regimes he was more of a democratic socialist
@@S.D.323You should maybe do some reading about what communism is.
@@MrGoldfish8 my input on this is that communism is taken to mean ussr-type communism nowadays but that Marx's communist manifesto was not like that and was closer to what we call socialism, this seems to lead to confusion sometimes

I keep telling people it's like if every time I used the word _democracy_ people went, "Wait -- like they do in North Korea?!? That's really bad though!"
So frustrating.

The only way to break up the false choices of american politics and ideologies, we must continue to follow the guy who’s done nothing but reinforce and highlighted that falsehood of politics where everyone else is powerless and they rich alwaysstay in control no matter how much of a cartoon character the “elected” leader is.
Why are all of these talking points sounding like my dad? “NEXT THE BIBLES ARE BURNED, CHLOE! JUST LIKE IN 1984!!!!” Rubin is an instant headache.
This but my mom. So fucking obnoxious
Instant migraine for me. With that being said, listening to the empty, Ill-informed, and incoherent "high level ideas" Rubin spews makes me pray that someone will do what's right and shoot me directly in the face. As I see it, being shot in the face is probably less painful than the migraine I always get from trying to follow Dave's low level logic.
Bubble up totalitarianism exists in the same universe where trickle down economics works
Congrats comrade, you’ve written the best comment on this video, perhaps all of UA-cam. Thank you for your service.
The very idea that Trump would break fascism shows their ignorance. When Dave Rubin said that, I felt a chill combined with a wave of nausea.
Trump would break fascism, like when he tried to overthrow the government (kinda like what every other totalitarian has done)

the right now: burns the books
"He broke through the duopoly"

The burning books part isn’t even 1984. Thats Fahrenheit 451
Also Bradburry actually belived in cancel culture so it would be more fitting (no, really, in the book, that's how the government policy started; not saying he was right tho).
They're so obsessed with 1984 they can't consider any other book, why do they never seem to think of A Brave New World ?
@@sjstronghold9238 ikr ABNW is dope for Right wing peeps
And that's about cultural anti-intellectualism, not institutional power.
I love how they use Drew Brees as an example of a victim of cancel culture. At first he didn't support kneeling or BLM, and they loved him... and then his teammates changed his mind, now they're boycotting Saints games and the NFL. At no point was his livelihood as one of the most highest-paid professional football players ever threatened.
Also isn’t cancel culture just a bunch of individuals voicing their opinions? social media allows us to access the opinions of millions of people everyday, so it seems more overwhelming than it used to be??....There are no organized weekly cancellation meetings where the cancellation council decides who gets to “survive” that week. “Cancel culture” has literally happened since the beginning of democracy from all types of people. One week it’s Drew Brees, who is fine. The next week it’s Zack fox getting banned off of Twitter (lmao) who is fine. I think there is something to be discussed with “regular” people losing their jobs- if they can keep their beliefs shoved down and they’re not treating people like garbage in the workplace then should they be fired? Or should they have their accounts deleted for the harassment they may conduct online? I feel like that’s where the important discussion needs to be had. Other than that it’s such a non-issue, like oh no Kim kardashian is getting mean comments? close the computer lol
Lmk what u think skooks

I will still never be able to get over when Dave Rubin said the fellowship of the ring was about how Frodo didn't need help from others and relied on his own rugged individual nice to get the ring to Mordor. I mean for fuck sake the title of the book is "The Fellowship Of The Ring" and he uses that book as if it's somehow and example rugged individualism. Seriously Dave Rubin needs to teach a master class on how to misunderstand things.
I also hate that whole thing he does where he acts like he's thinking up a point pause is what he saying swallows pause again shakes his head and then starts talking like he didn't know exactly what he was going to say or something it's just so fucking pretentious I hate it.

If conservatives are really “censored” then how come I get prageru ads so often? Surely it must be the brave conservative resistance making rare victories online.
Better yet, why were about 90% of the 2020 election ads Republican in some way, shape or form?
Prageru isn't conservative in any meaningful way, google "Overton Window" for an explanation. The narrative is controlled on all important issues like race, globalism, gender, traditionalism, financial usury etc. but they allow for disagreement on things that don't matter to give the illusion of free-thinking being allowed and encouraged.
Anecdotal experience is NOT evidence.
