  • When Tabytha Gonzalez first encountered the Ballroom scene in 1990s New York City, it was the first time she’d ever seen trans women. She quickly recognized herself in them and began to take whatever steps necessary to live authentically. It being the 90s, employment options for trans women were few, so Tabytha ultimately turned to sex work. Sadly, Tabytha’s work and circumstances within the prison system led her to a long period of incarceration in a men’s prison.
After fourteen years of incarceration, Tabytha was ultimately released back into society, where she was determined to live her true self. Thanks to the creation of organizations that provide life-saving and gender-affirming care, Tabytha was able to begin her true and holistic transition - ultimately allowing her to access education, gainful employment, and a fulfilling life as a wife of twelve years and mother to five trans children.

I'm so happy Tabytha made it to this place in her life. After going through all that she was able to thrive once she could access some support, and in turn support others in the community. Tabytha, you are so strong and beautiful!

I came out in 1991 in NYC golden era so this story resonates with me. I know about all she is referring to-Christopher St Piers. Traxx, and the Stroll. Glad she is still with us. She is beautiful and real

Thanks to Tabytha for telling a bit of her story! So glad to hear that she found community, acceptance, and family! I'm not trans but gay and experienced the piers and the West Side Hwy stroll 2 decades before she did (mid 70s-mid 80s). To get out alive and thriving is a great accomplishment!
