@@B-Dad It makes sense for his character though. His storyline has been building up to this for awhile. The vampire part was interesting twist to it but I don't think its completely left field. Honestly makes his character more complex
When I first saw this episode, Riley's actions made a strange kind of sense to me. He wants to feel needed by someone...anyone...and since he doesn't feel needed by Buffy, he's casting about for anything that can validate his worth.
Your theory is good because the guy who was crazy and ended up being killed in this episode WAS the guy Glory fed off in episode 5 in front of the monk.
Yes he mentioned he had a wife and kids, trying to make himself more human to this nutty lady, a good idea if you are grabbed by a serial killer, but it didn’t work.
Riley's first instinct isn't to work with the Scoobies, it is to gather together soldiers. Riley wants Buffy to cry on his shoulder, but that won't just happen only because they are dating. She didn't cry in front of Angel, so much as he was the reason for her crying. There is a difference between the two considering what I'm talking about. She didn't cry to her friends when Angel became Angelus. Over time with trust perhaps she could get to the moment Riley wants, but him bursting into her house with soldiers definitely didn't help said trust situation. Riley wants to comfort Buffy; to give his life the purpose of "Mission's boyfriend" as Graham stated to him. Buffy's personality is already struggling with Riley wanting these things from her, as she is a strong, independent woman and The Slayer. Even if her mom wasn't sick this wouldn't just be something to do. It has to be something earned and Riley isn't earning it. Buffy opens up to people and allows them to take care of her the way Riley was asking when they don't push her into said action, and when she trusts the relationship enough. It took Giles until the end of _Helpless_ before Buffy opened up to him that way. Which was 22 months from the time he met Buffy. Riley has known Buffy only 13 months, and they have only been dating 10 months. If he's patient and doesn't push during difficult times and lets trust build rather than having jealousy issues, what he wants from Buffy could be natural. The end of the episode isn't leaning in that direction, though. I love the idea of Dawn calling for Buffy while Buffy is crying before Buffy hears her the second time. It's a great tension-building moment. Giles saying, "killer snot monster from outer space" as well as Xander's car/planet joke just before are incredibly amusing. I would love to know who was in the Queller demon costume. It looks too small for a full grown person.
I have to disagree on the Buffy/Giles relationship. He was super sweet with her in season 2. When she broke down after rescuing Giles at the factory and said she couldn’t get through all this without him.
@@lahalhalha That doesn't mean they had a father/daughter bond at that point. There's a difference between not being able to do this without him (a bastardized quote from the _Passion_ episode) type of S2 moments of sweetness, and reaching the "father's love for the child" as is both Giles and Buffy realizing through Travers. It was in the process of developing before _Helpless._ If Gies reached the father/daughter relationship bond and trust I'm talking about before _Helpless,_ he never would have poisoned Buffy with muscle relaxers to begin with, and instead would have told Buffy about it so they could con The Council together into believing Giles was poisoning Buffy. _Helpless_ was the key moment for Buffy and Giles in moving from the bond of Watcher and Slayer to Father/daughter. Giles had to no longer be working for the council, otherwise he would be someone who was sweet with Buffy, but the father/daughter bond wouldn't quite be there, in my opinion.
"Maybe she different from the others?" You nailed it - the folks in the mental ward all had their sanity drained from them by Glory, with no sanity remaining. Joyce, on the other hand, was only going a little insane now and then as the tumor messed with her, she was mostly lucid. So the Queller wasn't sure whether she needed quelling. Once she started babbling it made the decision. Joyce got the knowledge the same way the mental patients did - apparently those who are not fully anchored in reality can see that Dawn is not quite as she appears. You figured that out while thinking about it...
Good reaction and once again solid analysis. The storyline that I think is most important in this episode is the one with Buffy, Dawn, and Joyce. Family and what makes a family has been a major theme since Episode 1. Adoption and how to handle the challenges with a teenager is something I don’t recall in many shows. This is all about adoption. Here it’s a crazy person or it could be an old friend seeing Joyce and saying something inappropriate. When do you tell a child they were adopted? How do you convince the adoptive girl she is loved like her talented older natural born sister ? All this while the typical Sunnydale stuff is happening.
Great reaction. This, for me, is one of the scariest episodes of the season, if not the whole series. Part of that is the Queller, an INCREDIBLY creepy monster of the week in terms of design and performance, easily up there with the Gentlemen and Der Kindestod in my book. But even scarier than it, at least for me, are Joyce's outbursts. The idea of starting to lose a family member to a degenerative mental disease hits me with fear in a way that no demon or monster ever could. The anger in her eyes when she growls "I'd tear it in half and stick it in bed with me!" turns my stomach and chills my bones.
It's been a little while since I watched this season properly, so forgive me if I'm wrong. But I'm pretty sure that the crazy guy saying "no data" etc to Dawn, was the the postal worker from a previous episode, who was pleading with Glory about having a family, before she stuck her fingers in his head to do the freaky brain wiggle.
S5 was so hard hitting, another brilliant episode showing the real anguish and anxiety when a parent becomes ill, and the trauma of having to deal with it for the children. Even though we know Buffy is strong she breaks down doing the washing up, and cries her eyes out, great acting. Again we see Dawn being the focus of strange reactions to her which is really worrying her now, and also we see Spike's obsession with Buffy becoming stronger, and Ben of course isn't what he seems. The Queller demon was one of the worst in the series . Another really good episode from S5. This strangely scores a low IMDB score of only 7.0
> Joyce is presenting with symptoms of Tourett's Syndrome You mean because of her sudden utterances that don't reflect her true perspective? Riley has some insecurities and a deep need for being needed. So he goes to vampires “prostitutes” to try and understand what Buffy feels for vampires and bc the lady vamps he visits “need” something from him. Which goes back to his insecurity for being needed.
