Ayyyy! The Ulvestad Defense is a really sick line, it can be really nice for Black. However, there is one line that a super-aggressive WFM taught me that is pretty tricky and that I think should be covered at some point--after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 b5, there is the shocking counterattack 6. Nc3!?, which she used to win a really nice game.

0:46 White doesn’t in fact win because black plays Ke6 and it gets really messy and difficult for both. 😅 But when you gain rating black eventually stops playing Fried Liver and does that Na5 instead.
I absolutely love how you pronounce diagonal as "the-yaa-gonal" and not "die-yaa-gonal", as is the usual case. It's quite refreshing to hear (atleast for me) so Please don't change ! ❤
Happy birthday and Happy Diwali, Igor. Cheers from India and Thank you, as always, for all the strong pointers and coaching. You are definitely one of the best chess teachers on youtube... And yes, one of the best players on the planet (you are a GM, of course).
Thats just one of the "normal" lines. Ulvestad (a norwegian surname btw) I think its called? Fritz would also be an fairly "normal" way to countyer 2 knights defense. If you play 2 knights defence with Ng5 as white, then Ulvestads and Fritz are two variants that you need to know. They are relatively uncommon (compaired to the mainline) but you will encounter them from time to time. I know I do. Also play Fritz occationally as black (to throw white of).
Thank you for bringing this up! I'm always playing Ng5 in two knights defense so I know the theory of Bc1 retreat when b4 is played, and I think this is end of the line and I just have an extra pawn. However this video shows black still have a strong attack and I still need to defend carefully even if I know Bc1.
Hi Igor I was wondering if you could please make a video on how to pick up on the opponents drawing moves and how to counter it ...I always bottled my advantage because my opponent found a drawing move by repitition
This video shows nice tricks but there's several lines where white remains even or with a slight advantage so I think it takes considerably more study to be able to play this with confidence.
I cannot stop me from seeing your videos, you’re always amazing and have something new and useful.. I can’t wait to face fried liver attack to try this Thank you
Thanks for the video! I’ve been trying to get a handle on the Fried Liver Attack, but I feel a bit overwhelmed with all the different gambits and strategies, like the Blackburne Shilling Gambit, then Rousseau Gambit *And now this ONE.* Isn't there is one straightforward opening you would recommend to effectively counter the Fried Liver? I really appreciate your help!
8:50 why dont you just capture the knight right away? my initial idea as I saw the position. its dangerous not to capture with the pawn, and its dangerous to not to aw well. black has brutal attacks in either outcomes.
You are right. 5…b5 is a theoretical branch of the two knights defence in the Italian game opening theory called the Ulvestad variation. While not as infamous as the Fried liver attack, it is still fairly well known and the best response by White 6. Bf1 is common knowledge to most intermediate level players and beyond.
Sorry, but it was far from good commentary. Unless "GM" Igor Smirnov is actually a beginner, he would know that White does not just win in the Fried Liver after 6Nxf7 Kxf7 7Qf3+. Yes, White has a double attack on Black's d5 Knight, but Black defends with 7...Ke6 remaining a piece up. From that point on, it is an extremely tense and interesting game that has been analyzed by the best engines without reaching a clear confusion. An actual Grandmaster would never casually state that after 7Qf3+ "White wins." Who is he really?
I don't know why but I saw each one this moves while following the video even though I'm just a 1800 And I think c3 by gukesh was a critical mistake as it wasted time, maybe not so much of a mistake from engine perspective but from human perspective I think it's a huge mistake, Anyone Correct me if I'm wrong
In the comp era u can easily see that instead of 0-0, white just plays Qf3 and nothing special happens. This and similar channels will slowly disappear cause there is no use for them anymore. Sorry.
That’s why I will block this channel from recommendations. He also drags the video and put sponsored content in the middle. He should learn with Agadmator

LOL that Kramnik reference. Just process the process
I will block him and report him
ha ha when I lose a game in 15 moves..I unleash my inner kramnik
Happy birthday Igor!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎂🎂
Magnus described Gukesh as constantly calculating, calculating lines he didn't even consider.
Just the second video that I've seen from you, but this was a beautiful analysis, subscribed. Thanks, man, keep it up!

These lines have been covered in earlier videos by GM Igor.
Just a bit differently.

Great analysis on a tense game
my favorite channel for learning chess :) started this year and now managed elo 1000 :)) thank you brotha' !
Happy Diwali...and Birthday!
Gukesh is a beast! 😈
Happy birthday Igor Smirnoff!!!
Absolute Magness indeed even the game end with the draw!
This video shows nice tricks but there's several lines where white remains even or with a slight advantage so I think it takes considerably more study to be able to play this with confidence.
At 7:16 did Carlson have a tactic playing nb4?
I wonder why Magnus didn't go for the standard Traxler these usually counter the fried liver attacks. Pls can someone explain.
I cannot stop me from seeing your videos, you’re always amazing and have something new and useful..
I can’t wait to face fried liver attack to try this
Thank you
At 1:50 what would happen if white took the knight, opening up the threat for the knight fork on f7?
bxc4, we capture the other f7-attacker and that knight doesn't have support anymore if it goes to f7
I remember watching this game. Sensational defense by Gukesh
Many Happy Returns of the Day, Igor! 🎂

bringing out the bishop before the second knight avoids it all together no?
kramnik would have hit the report button about 100 times by the time the bishop went back to f1, if this was an online game being played
8:50 why dont you just capture the knight right away? my initial idea as I saw the position. its dangerous not to capture with the pawn, and its dangerous to not to aw well. black has brutal attacks in either outcomes.
What if pawn takes?
Would be nice to see some analysis of what Magnus had better played at 10.18 min.
Nice video thanks
Happy birthday and Happy Diwali, Igor. Cheers from India. Wish you "A very happy created future life" 😊
Thanks for the complete game already in the form of reel😅.
Sir can you start a course on sicilian kan
I still maintain this is not Fried Liver unless Black takes 5...Nxd5 and White plays 6.Nxf7. If White goes 6.d4, that's Lolly Attack.
Lovely game by Gukesh
Videos are great, thank you
Thanks
Thanks Sir
Great game and explanation!

To clarify: Carlsen's way to "counter" the Fegatello (Fried Liver) Attack is actually to avoid it by playing the Ulvestad instead.
feel free to unleash your inner kramnik was so funny
❤It was a brilliant game, loved it 😊
Lmao i remmeber makng a study about the ulvestad like a year ago this opening is 🔥
I already have played this move many times, but it works so well!
Bf1 is a known response to b5. If your opponent plays that, there's no need to be suspicious.
Fried liver is not a sure win for white.
ULVESTAD MENTIONED 🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I've destroyed so many players with this variation. Thanks Igor
Igor farming Magnus like Gotham lol 😂
😂
A very long castling is perfect for those who likes to enjoy very Long Island ice tea.
Is there a chess title below beginner? Asking for a friend who keeps getting checkmated in four moves
btw you posted this line 1 year ago Seems like magnus following your video😂
I play against a guy who knows all the lines in this opening and plays Bf1. But I know all the lines too.
LMFAO unleash your inner Kramnick xDDDDD
Ulvestad's genius, not Magnus'
happy birthday
B5 is a old rare move , Magnus did not invent that move
Happy birthday :)
Unleash your inner kramnik.. lol
Inner kramnik😂😂😂😂😂😂
Getting a draw is not countering an opening.
btw we got clickbaited black didn't win it was a draw
That's y he's the modern Bobby Fischer and Gary Kasparov
This is not the Fried Liver Attack. The Fried Liver Attack is 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7.
It's a draw, a really nice game
😃
❤

Why didn't you made video on D Gukesh wining world championship ??? You like to make videos when Indian lost or for Magnud 😂😂
Ulvestad.
bait thumbnail, bait title. I expected to see carlsen actually teaching something.
That’s why I will block this channel from recommendations. He also drags the video and put sponsored content in the middle. He should learn with Agadmator
@@jw5385I think the guy just said it jokingly
You really shouldn't watch any videos about Aristotle either then.
Check your opening names, GM Igor. This is not fried liver. 👎
you are the one who should check the opening names dude, this is fried liver
@@sbosboniso7036 Actually, officially it is not. In fried liver blacks knight takes the pawn. It's the trap he showed at the beginning.
