Bush had an unbelievable debut with 1994’s Sixteen Stone that eventually surpassed 6x platinum status. The post-grunge juggernaut continued making moody, mercurial, and sometimes menacing music has continuing mutating while keeping them modern with a total of nine full-length releases with 2022’s The Art of Survival as their most recent chapter.
The band’s headlining Ryman tour stop was furthering their support for the October 2022 release where the camp invited PG’s Chris Kies onstage to catalog their compact setups. Guitarist Chris Traynor starts the chat covering his instruments that run the gamut from import steals to one-off custom baritones with and without frets. The baton gets passed to Gavin Rossdale tech Trace Davis who covers the frontman’s arsenal of Strats, SGs, and Jazzmasters before breaking down Rossdale’s core patches living within his Fractal Audio FM9.

Chris Traynor is such a cool guy, down to earth and just a genuine nice person! Cool video, thanks for sharing!
i love bush so much! Another great episode!
Hey Ray, cool to see you here. I enjoy your channel.
Chris is such a gem. I love the message and in a world where everyone is trying to sell you their expensive signature, or some unreachable Custom Shop / Vintage, he is so refreshing.
Saw Bush live for the first time a couple months ago..I honestly had no idea they were still around much less making new music. They put on a great show and prompted me to check out what they have been up to since the 90's....they still sound great
The first Chris Traynor Rig Rundown was legendary. Stoked to see an updated rundown!
I'm still partially deaf from seeing Bush in Lafayette Louisiana in 95' was front row and was a bad ass show
Saw them a few years ago at fest called 'Next Big Thing'. Weird to see a band from the 90s play that but they completely blew the other bands away. They were tight as hell, perfectly mixed and energy off the charts. Razorblade Suitcase doesn't get the recognition it deserves!!
Agree Razorblade Suitcase has some good songs. It's a shame they're not in the set. Granted I haven't listened to their new stuff
Sixteen Stone is probably my favorite album in terms of guitar tone, and rhythm guitar writing.
The leads were great too, very original
@@panqarahn3993 I just fancy myself more of a rhythm guy, so I have always placed this as my favorite rhythm album. It’s great all around though. Awesome catchy melodies, both vocally and on guitar.
@@CameronForrester I'm a rhythm guy too!
@@panqarahn3993glycerine has good rhythm
Perry coming in from behind the camera: "Zach, are you techin', Bud?!". Perfect! 🤣🤣🤣
Bush is awesome and I love The Ryman. One of my favorite places to see a concert. Thanks for this one guys!
The tech guy for Gavin is a star himself seen him in a bunch of videos for big bands 🤘🏻
Love Chris’ attitude with regard to playing and to gear. First time learning of him, too.
Bush has been one of my favorite bands for a LONG time! thank you for this! I would also hope that while the band Crypta are touring in the US that you guys are getting a rig rundown of their gear! THAT would be awesome...would love to know what Taina and Jessica are using for the tour although it does for the most part look like backline gear! GET ON IT!!!!
i don't really know anything about this Chris Traynor guy, nor have i followed Bush since like, 2001...but more power to him for the down to earth approach without the pretentiousness....always a good thing to have in the music world.
I've been a Bush fan since 98-99..
First 2 records are great and the last few they have put out are pretty good.
Tarynor def seems like a cool ass dude... Big addition to the band, plus he was in helmet too makes him even cooler
Another great, great, great, rig rundown. Thanks guys!
Chris throws off the best vibes. Cheers from a fellow Squier player!
Awesome look at some cool gear. Thanks!
Met them in Boston, really nice guys. Love Chris’s sound
My buddy Chris! He is one of the nicest and coolest guys I know.
“I’m just one guy who’s obsessed with tone.”
Spittin’ 🔥🔥🔥
Hell yeah! Love Traynor amps!
Funny cameo from Zach Myers of Shinedown.
Man 1st 3 min in... love this dude and his thinking... thanks for the rundown. I've never seen a Custom Shop Baritone.
Chris seems like a genuine dude. Bravo.
Guy did not want to sh** up 😂
That 90's SG is a SG Special and the pickups (assuming they're stock) are the 490R and 490T set.
Gavin still does a great job as a frontman and showman, didn't hesitate to come into the crowd and get the audience involved when I saw them a few years back. Definitely bummed that the original members are all gone, but I was glad to see him still using the the purple Jazzmaster with the cheetah strap - missing that guitar in the rundown this time.
I’m sure you know this but that guitar was formally owned by Joe Walsh and plays the verse parts on Hotel California
@EDAR96 true! I also love that he's like "I'm British. What do I care about the eagles? I'm gonna play this guitar"
Chris seems to be a nice guy
Seems
@@basiltiffani8850 lol
@@basiltiffani8850 yeah I thought that too!
Microdose?🤔
What an awesome intro!
Chris is such a nice guy.
So happy he said, his favorite guitar in the world is the SG because I over the years always come back to the SG.. aesthetically there not my favorite but playing wise with the low action and weight ill always stick with the sg… even gavin using multiple sgs👌👌
Cool cat. Excellent attitude and has some really cool aspects to his setup.
Chris "Always-Prepared" Keys !!!!
I really wanted to know what amp models Rossdale is using. I appreciate Chris uploading his Fractal rig online but I've been a fan of Gavins tone since 1994 and really wanted to know how he's brought it forward into the Fractal system!
Chris is absolutely right about those J Mascis Squier Jazzmasters. The necks are fucking sweet and feel like a guitar 5 times the price. I bought it with intention of getting better on it and and eventually getting a fender jazzmaster. Never bothered cause the Squier was so good
I have the same rig. Axe effects 3 and matrix gt 1000 and a mesa
Bush! Fuck yeah!
Wheres gavins 90s guitars :(
Love it! This guy doesn't need a $440K "burst" to kill.
Strange that Gavin's downtuned guitars are the shorter scale SG's and the longer scaled Strats are in Standard tuning. Most do the opposite.
I think Chris is right. Gear is fun and all that but many times it holds us back. I dosn’t matter what gear you use as long as it sounds good to your ears. If your tone sounds good then have fun and roll with it.
I don’t understand how they use the juice box with the fractal is it before or after the output?
I wanna know more about the different ways to ground!
Does anyone know whatever happened to the dark green fender Strat Gavin used during the Razorblade suitcase tour? I haven’t seen it since.
Yeah, it must just have been retired. He hasn’t played it live since.
Interesting utilization guitar-wise between Gavin and Chris as one uses Fender for drop C and baritone/Gibson for standard and the other uses Gibson for drop C and Fender for Standard. Wonder why that is??
BROTHER TRACE!!!!!!
22:40 The most underrated yet most beautiful Guitar ever in the history of our huminty
do not give a DAMN who disagree
SG for PRESIDENT especially EBONY CUSTOM
The Fender CS baritone looked like a normal size tele until he handed it to Chris 😅😂
Did Chris retire his Les Paul that he bought in the 90's from the previous rig rundown?
Disappointed that Bass wasn’t covered after seeing the White Ampeg in the background
What is star grounding? Is that where you solder a wire to all the pots, and then finally to the output jack ground? So if you do this, you don't need to ground the pot tabs? Did I hear that right?
No, you have to ground the tabs or the pots won’t work. Hes a bit too much
@@Ottophil Ahh, ok. I've always done both, so was surprised when he said that. In that case, I hope he's not doing that to Gavin's guitars, lol!!
Do a rig run down for Unwound
I'm not a guitar player, I don't know anything about this band, and never heard of Chris Taylor, but he is one of the most inspiring musicians I've ever seen on this channel.....be yourself, use cheap gear....boom
Custom shop reissue gibsons are anything but cheap....
I think gibson lespauls are incredibly beautiful but no way would I pay the kind of money for a 58 or 59 , what half a million totally insane
Gavin + the Black SG of Honor???
now the man is truly gaining genuine taste for a truly goddess of a Guitar
especially if having the beautiful Witchy woman singing next to it
Never heard of bush until I watched Oderus Urungus read “ goodnight moon. “ to the kiddies
Thoughts on Star Grounding? 🤔
We need an Orange 9MM reunion Chris!
Hey Chris Traynor or his peeps...go look at Big Lou's Guitars. He has all the familiar guitars but they are all wider necks for those of us who have huge hands. Tell Lou or Nick that I sent you.
Gavin Rossdale feat. Amy Lee. Nice!
don't really dig the music, but what this dude says at around 16 min is spot on. It's nice to have nice things, but nobody cares, so neither should you. Or just be aware that you're just being needlessly fancy (and that's cool too).
I think that sometimes the Tech does the rundown instead of the musicians so that the tech can have her/his moment in the light. Perhaps a rock star ego thing perhaps not. I like hearing from the real pro techs. 🤷🏼♂️🫘
genuinely they know much more about the gear than the actual musician too
Its literally their job.
Good to see a comment that understands this
Seeing Gav play a gibson looks weird. It's like watching Slash play a tele
saw them in 2015 and Gavin's guitar was inaudible. 100% a backing track
Chris Traynor will always be Chris from Orange 9mm to me
Damn you, Chris. You can't say squire. My wife now knows these words and expects me to sound as good as you guys did in Louisville with a cheap guitar. 😂
Gavin just can't be bothered, apparently.
Maybe he has diarrhea
Hes a rockstar. I wouldnt do a rig run down if i was a rockstar, id get my tech to do it
Thank God... this way we get the "roadie" who is way more knowledgeable... Dude should get his own UA-cam channel
@@MisterGuitarItalia a roadie is a dumb guy who just carries heavy stuff. A tech is a smart guy
@@Ottophil nothing gets by you... except the quote marks around "roadie"
what? Gavin , no purple Jazzmaster with humbuckers and bigsby ??
25:33
alright 2:10
i know i am all about a good Black SG style of guitar, but that other Black beauty is just
.......
SO DOOM/BLACK METAL
🤘
They did the Judas at a Tool show.
Hey if y’all actually find a LP JR for $800 lmk 😅
Gavin couldn't come say hi? 🫤
No bass :(
I swear he's Mark Morton's alt-rock clone
Everything but a Traynor amp.
No tube amps = crappy compromise (and yes, I own the best modelers there are)
so just to summ that up, nice guitars, boring rigs 😂🎸
Yeah, but still interesting to me. It was the same way with Silversun Pickups they use some great effects but had just started using axe effects.
For real, I get bummed when they use fake amps
@@EDAR96 because it sounds as good as real amps and you feel duped into spending thousands on amps when you could just get an axe fx? (That was me haha that’s what I felt) I have an axe fx now and it’s amazing
@@Samueldonovan2007 that’s your opinion not mine bud
@@EDAR96 An amp is just a boring box. Uniqueness is in guitars and effects
For me it's matter to have 100 watts not only for decibels but the type of sound i research.100 watts is very very heavy and very tight and fat sounding amp..
Gavin's too cool to talk about his own gear? 😂
15:33 Chris makes a really good point, an inspirational point, and you just blow it off like "Yeah, whatever. Stfu so I can ask more questions." Smh...
Rosedale is such a big star his tech speaks for him ? Get real
If this was song rundown I’m sure gavin would talk about those
Gavin had Gwen.
Now he doesn't.
Ergo, Gavin is a dope.
Damn, these are getting more and more boring as the year goes by... not premier's fault,
Gwen Stafani went all right wing when she split from Rossdale..............
She did? I knew she was Christian and she married a country singer, but I haven’t followed her since the early 2000s.
That beginning was some mediocre playing lol
He’s just sloppy, he never bothered to try to became better. His volume is usually way down live.
And how many records have you sold? Dudes a legend, and I’m sure he probably considers himself more of a songwriter first and foremost
BUSH ONE OF THE WORST BANDS IN THE HISTORY IF MANKIND. REMEMBER WHEN HE SANG A COLAB ON THE VOICE 😂HE COULDNT SING A NOTE 😅
It's weird that you dislike them so much you actual came here just to say that.
@@jordanpratt3821 well ,,, cocker , , , I was watching for the guitars and realsied just how many people are deaf in this world when it comes to this horseshite
Bored and empty comment 😒😪
@@RockNoTieneLaCulpa beautiful and precise squire
For rigs using Axe fx or similar, I wish they’d go into the programming… otherwise all you get is “they use an Axe fx”
