  • Welcome back to @RaagaMetro
The Raga that we are going to see today is Raga Hamsanadham.
Hamsam means swan and nadham means sound.
Hamsanadham literally means the “call of the swan”
It is a Prathimadhyama raga. It is a janyam of the 60th Melakartha raga known as Neethimathi.Prathimadhyamam means M2 ie bigger Ma swara is used in this Raga.
This raga is apt to be sung in the evening. Not only this when this raga is sung in a concert the environment becomes joyous and filled with love and romance. It has the quality to emote such feelings. May be its because of this reason that this raga is extensively used in Film music.
As we always talk about the medical benefits of ragas this raga does not have a specific medical benefit but studies have shown that it has a major impact on psychological patients.
This Raga has 2 variations in the Arohanam and avarohanam
1 has Dhaivatham(Da) and another does not have Dhaivatham (Da).
    S R2 M2 P D3 N3 S
    S N3 D3 P M2 R2 S
This one has Dhaivatham in it
    S R2 M2 P N3 S
    S N3 P M2 R2 S
There is no Dhaivatham in this.
Those days when they sung Hamsanadham it had Dhaivatham in it. In fact the very well-known tyagaraja Krithi Bantureethi kolu was sung with the Da swaram in it.
With time the Da was omitted from this Ragam and the latter arohanam and avaroham was known as Hamsanadham.
Musical experts have quoted that the Arohanam and Avarohanam which has the Da in it is known as Sarangatharangini and the one without the Da is known as Hamsanadham.
The main Jeeva swaras of this Ragam is Ri and Ni
There is an interesting fact worth mentioning about this raga.
As we had mentioned earlier Hamsam means swan, isn’t it?
This swan has the special quality, when milk and water is mixed and given to the swan it has the special skillset to just suck and drink the milk alone and leave the water behind may be because of this reason saint tyagaraja has said in his popular kriti Bantureethi’s anupallavi that by chanting the Rama’s name we can eliminate all the vices in us such as lust, anger, arrogance and jealousy which may be present in us(Human). This is similar to the quality of the swan to separate milk from water.
Not only this we term this raga as a divine raga because Saraswathi who is the goddess of knowledge sits on her vehicle which is the Swan.So the raga is always associated with divinity.
About popular carnatic compositions, Firstly, we have Bantureethi kolu by Tyagaraja swami.
Secondly Kalyana Rama by Oothukadu sir
Then Kripanidhe by Muthiah bhagavathar and lastly Neeye paramukham by papanasam Shivam sir
When we talk about Film compositions, we have to mention that Illayaraja sir has extensively used this raga. The very famous song Thendral Vandhu ennai thodum, Om namaha from the movie Idhayathai thirudathe and isaiyil thodanguthamma these are very popular songs in this raga. The latter is sung in every other musical compettion. Not only Raja Sir but many other composers have thoroughly used this, Raga. I could go on and on about the film compositions in this raga.

Thanks Kavita for bringing in ChiAbhijit in this M.Mashup. I am hearing him for the first time.what a voice. They say in Tamil an elephant has invaded a bronze store. God bless him.! In fact when you first visited our place with family, Abhijit was not keeping well and I was denied an opertunity to hear his voice. I conclude my comment with a famous Tamil saying "PULIKKU PIRANTHATHU POONAI AHATHU " ❤❤❤
