I wear spectacles, and headphone push the side arms against my ears, after a while, it hurts. My Heil 'phones don't do that! Expensive, but worth the money in the long run. RIP Bob, I like your gear!
I've wore glasses my entire life (nearly, from 6yro on, 45 now). Shouldn't be an issue. Sounds like a bad frame. Next set, talk to the salesman about this and bring a headset to demo for him/her. I have had plastic and metal frames, and although I prefer metal, the plastics didn't approach bad until I had both safety glasses over the prescription ones and a headset, and a safety helmet.
In aviation, where we use headsets all the time, we tend to buy glasses with flat metal arms, so they lie flat against the head and the headphone's earseals don't leave a gap to let noise in.
Another good vid of helping out us mere mortals. I use Heil pro6 headset, I find them so comfortable and hear nothing in the room. The amount of times the Mrs has made me jump out of my skin!! Awesome when in long QSO's or testing 😉😁 Have a good'un, cheers
I have been using the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro for a few years for listening to computer audio and they now are pulling double duty as the headphones for my radio. They are headphones only but they are the most comfortable set I have used. Even with glasses, they don't push in the sidearms. I can wear these literally for hours without any fatigue. They are reasonable at $99 USD.
RIP Bob. love the sound of the gear ! I made XLR to 7300 cable as well . and for outher radios as well. I like XLR. some times I plug in my mixing board. I even got one that had 12V power adapter. I cut the ends off went to Power poles . runs great on battery for portable, no RF gets in. I choke all my leads . normally I run a single ear piece head set for portable. I need to hear around me as well as radio. love the sound of your mics . now if I use them then you adjust for me. getting them settings can take a wile . I right down my settings . gives me a starting point when portable. 73's
It's all about the R&D Callum. Great video. I came back to the livestream and missed you by about 1 min. Hope you and Wendy have a good weekend mate. 73
The first decent headphones of any kind and for any purpose that I acquired were Sennheisers back in 1985. Never looked back - until that is I somehow managed to leave them in Scotland before I moved over to the States. I now use (from my old radio days) the ubiquitous Beyerdynamic DT100s. Btw, headset aside, and speaking as an ex-commercial radio and news guy as well as a home studio music enthusiast, I do love your studio mic sound there. Very nicely sculpted. Clarity, plenty of warmth and bottom-end, no boominess and not too overcompressed either. Beefy, not trash-compacted. Lovely. I chose well when subscribing to learn more, and, as I said in my live message t'other day, it's almost your 'fault' that I decided to re-embark on pursuing amateur radio as a hobby as a move up from SWL. Of course, by "fault" I mean "influence" ;) Thank you so much for the inspiration and tolerance of newbie questions sir. Plugging away and messing happily with my new ICOM I-7300 as a receiver. What a radio! Tomorrow I finish off the random longwire sloper that will go into our tall locust tree. Happy DX'ing!
Haha.. Poor you.. OK, you will be disapointed to learn that I have discovered a method of doing a little bit more compression, limiting and other stuff inside Davinci Resolve that will mean I will sound much better on phones and tablets - but you might cringe when you listen on a big system.. We will see if you can spot it.. The first of those videos will probably come out next week sometime! LOL - however welcome along on the crazy journey!
Thanks! I have the Radiosport headset and this is excellent for a short while until your ears can not stand it any more. Me too will put Sennheiser on the wish list.
Hey Cal, thank you for taking the time to not only test the headset, but you even made a video about it!! You’re first class ol chap!! Now you’ve got me wondering if I would be better off with the pro 7 Heil and if so, could I figure out a way to work remote and use them with the computer lol. Maybe I’ll order the Heil and see if I can make it work. Have a great weekend!! After watching the whole video, I’m thinking I may just order the Senny’s and give them a try!
Thank Lord Callum, really appreciate your advice. And Yes it's a shame we have a silent key to remember may he rest in peace. Bob Heil was great to this hobby.
From what I read on here, they might work with an Icom radio as it supplies power for the microphone. On other transceivers which don't supply power, you'd need to find a way of powering the microphone. The speakers should work ok. I don't have a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adaptor (plenty the other way round!) to try or I'd give my A20s a go (speakers only).
@@DXCommanderHQ luckily on the new icom rigs like the 7300 and 7610, you can turn the mic voltage off in the menus. I’m running an EV 664 with my 7610 and am trying to decide on a headset. Hi Cal, I have been looking at purchasing a Heil headset set for some time. But have put it off because I don't really understand what type would be best for me. I am not interested in contesting or hunting DX stations. I just want something that is comfortable to wear and sounds good. I also want it to work on my ICOM 705 and my Yaesu FTDX10. For this I understand I will need two types of mike leeds to do this. Best wishes David M0DUU
@@DXCommanderHQIcoms use powered electret condenser mics, and most other rigs use passive dynamic mics. Icom mics don't work on other rigs because they need phantom power, and other rig's mics don't work on icoms because passive mics need extra gain.

Hey Cal, I realize you’re looking at the mic AND the headset as a whole unit with a focus on mic audio quality but as a much cheaper option for the headphones alone the Koss KSC75 or PortaPro are fantastic. Super lightweight but great audio reproduction. However they are an open design that sits on the ears and in my case I prefer them as I can’t use ear bud or fully enclosed headsets especially in the high humidity we get in summer over here. The open design is a plus if you operate portable and need to be able to hear your environment for safety reasons. I’m in the middle of building a mic and audio processor so kind of a unique approach but for anyone who doesn’t like sticking things inside their ear canals or sealing off their ears completely with conventional headphones I thought I’d share. The KSC75 changed everything for me after years of searching for a solution due to the humidity over here. 73 John

A bit off topic but as you say you've tried gaming headsets, was that just on the remote? I've found a better than average headset but it's USB connection - great for PC but to try on a radio (eg IC7300) I think I'll have to cut the usb audio plug off as there's no such thing as a usb to analogue converter (that way around) is there? 73 Ed.
There are USB porting programs / utilities so you COULD take your USB mic - shove it through the computer - and straight into the back of the radio (as if you were dooing FT8).
@@DXCommanderHQ I was wondering if a usb/analogue mixer might be the answer but I've come up with an alternative idea. Back to back usb sockets with a 5v supply and a simple usb-audio dongle. @DXCommanderHQ Pointing out my own over-simplification - USB devices look for a host - so connecting the headset (USB client) and a USB-to-analogue dongle (also client), simply isn't going to work as they both need a host (such as a PC as you suggested). It's back to cutting the cable from the headset to its USB converter plug if I want to try the PC gaming headset with any of my radios. 73 Ed.
@@Rubedo777 Thanks Rubedo but the headset is dirt cheap and while the manufacturer will no doubt have a headset with 3.5mm analogue connectors, chopping the lead to put in plug and socket is probably the easiest and cheapest solution.
