    How much do you know about fencing? For most people, it's not much - a few seconds of quick moves, and a winner declared on the scoreboard. The speed of attacks and hits is so fast - it's quite hard to follow with an untutored eye.
    Ukrainian fencer Olga Kharlan not only understands what's happening in those seconds, but also excels at scoring winning hits. Fencing isn't about force. Rather, the ability to choose the right position and distance is the key. The faster fencer will 'step-lunge', which offers more chances to land a hit first. The speed of this move made by professional athletes can be compared to the acceleration of a race car.
    What if we put Kharlan next to Alexander Grinchuk’s 600hp #RedBull350z, which accelerates up to 100km in four seconds, on the starting line? You'd be surprised to see who's faster.

    And then you go on an actual fencing video and you see people saying it isn't what they thought it was and how boring it is. There's a lot you can't see unless you're a fencer, which is unfortunate but once you get to know the sport you'll enjoy it.

    A .22 caliber bullet out of an Olympic-style target pistol is travelling around 1200 f/s (365.7 m/s) and the air pistol shown here shoots a tiny pellet at 541.3 f/s (165 m/s). Not quite a "gun's bullet". That said, fencers are impressive.

    • @rtrThanos
      @rtrThanos 7 років тому +7

      You're right, the fencer had better traction control and got off the line faster...makes the fencer seem even more impressive when you put it that way. Which I'm sure was the opposite of your intent. But few of us are driving race cars, which means the fencer is certainly faster than whatever POS rust bucket you're driving.

    i like sports fencing, but not in the way i enjoy historical fencing. im into it, and im probably going to give it a try because theres a new club near where i live. say whatever you will about it, maybe it is just a flimsy piece of metal that gives you points with the slightest touch, its fun. and i think thats the point here. i have yet to see a fencer that claims they can win an actual sword fight. i mean, yes, maybe its better than nothing, but against a historical fencer...
    fencing is fun, and i wish it didnt deviate so far from... well... fencing? there are so many fixes i can think of that would eliminate so many things people complain about.
    i enjoy the two types of fencing differently. theyre both competitive, while historical fencing is more technical and reality based, olympic fencing is more fast paced and competition orientated. also, my biggest complain about olympic sabre is... just flatten it and only make the edge conductive. it adds depth.
    heres the thing: historical fencing is more like ARMA 3, the fun is in the details, its very hardcore, it might be slower, but you need to have better responses. while olympic fencing is... i couldnt find any good metaphor for it so: its more stupid fun, its competitive and (mostly) skill based, but its more abstract, it has its own reality, much like other sports. also, i would say that historical fencing seems to be slightly more demanding in terms of strength and conditioning (except for longsword of course, thats got to be like the least physically demanding discipline). imagine doing épée (so its slower), but youre wearing twice the amount of protective gear, and the sword weighs twice as much. protective gear isnt all that limiting or heavy, yes, but GODDAMN that jacket gets hot.
    anyways, me want try. but you guys still have to admit, military sabre is way cooler than sports sabre. i also wont tell them that im doing historical fencing and act like a noob, so they get shocked and get taken aback by how i suddenly learned to fence on my first time on the piest. and i also do hope that they take me for a spar right away for my trial lesson.

  • @MedicMuffin
    @MedicMuffin 6 років тому +8

    Well yes, the primary advantage of swords is that they're fast and dont require much force to seriously wound you. This isnt exclusive to fencing, its mostly just because the weapons are very thin and overly flexible. Actual sword fencing (HEMA) or even japanese sword arts like kendo and iado are just as fast, but easier to see because the weapons themselves are thicker and cant be flicked around like a fencing foil/epee/sabre can.

    • @aceventura4784
      @aceventura4784 5 років тому +7

      Lol, "just as fast", okay buddy. Both those styles lack the excessive speed training an olympic fencer goes through to achieve these results. We are talking some of the finest and most skilled athletes in the world following centuries of athletic tradition to perfect these skills. Accept that Kendo is a different discipline with different areas focus, and HEMA is a hobby for slightly more serious larpers and history buffs. Thats not a bad thing, they have their own strengths and values, but respect the fact they do not approach the level of speed or precision presented here.

    Now this is only Sabre fencing that is shown here. There are two other forms, foil and epee which are slower in comparison. I fence foil myself and while it is pretty fast, Sabre is much faster and very different in comparison. Epee is the slowest and most easy to follow form, for those watching who don’t understand the rules. If you have never watched fencing before, watch epee, it is very strait forward with the rules. The first person to hit, anywhere on the body, gets a point. Foil and Sabre are based on a “right of way” rule which determines who is attacking and who is defending. Attacker will always get the point no matter who hits first. In my opinion foil is the most interesting to watch as the fencers have a smaller target area then the other forms so they can put themselves in much more danger then the other disciplines. Once my coach got close to me and put his blade around his head and got the point. I hit him as well but he had the right of way so he got the point. All I’m trying to say is that in foil a lot more exiting things happen. It is rare but sometimes you can see a fencer hit an opponent between their legs. I suggest to all who took the time to read this to go and watch all three forms of fencing (foil, sabre, epee) and see what interests you the most. 🤺

      I disagree with saying that sabre is the fastest, it is the fastest paced however I would say the actions which result in actual touches are very similar across all of them. The sabre tip is the fastest because it is whipping instead of thrusting as well

    Why do they all scream "YEAHHH" as if they absolutely know they got the touch?

    • @thomastse7378
      @thomastse7378 7 років тому +2

      Those screams are completely unnecessary. In fact, they're pretty insulting to fencing in general.

      I think that although some people find yelling disrespectful, it is often used for a variety of reasons including relieving tension, self-motivating, and influencing refs to give the fencer the touch.

      When everyone's insulted, no one's insulted. I've worked the armory at a few NACs, and you just get used to it.

      All of what FearAssassin23 said, and also maybe because it's an intimidation tactic to their opponent. And thomas tse, to say that yelling is unnecessary means you do not know the joy of winning a point in any sport.

      Surprisingly, some of the hits I've taken in sabre SOUND like they should be breaking bones, but with the full blade hitting my chest and 7 layers of fabric on me, it doesn't really feel that bad.
      Now, a hit to the knuckles on my weapon hand...THAT stings.

    Sabre? I thought it was called a Foil. That is what they told us in P.E. Class in high school.🤔🤔

    • @hyperwolf7899

      There are 3 disciplines in fencing, foil, epée and sabre. Sabre is the fastest but they're all pretty damn quick :-)

    • @TCWpower
      @TCWpower 8 років тому +2

      Saying one is faster than the other 2 is bias. Sabre is slashing while foil and epee are stabbing. Just because one is slashing compared to stabbing doesn't mean it's faster. It comes down to the athlete.

    • @owenmendelaar2000

      I think what he's trying to say is that the speed of the strikes is the same, but saber has so many different strikes it's easier to get a touch where as with epée and foil it stabbing and thus even if the strikes are just as fast it takes longer to get a touch.
