Nickel and Dimed is just a great book. One sign of its greatness is that every time it is assigned reading for high school kids a number of parents complain.

"The people at the top can start making less money." Bingo! That possibility rarely enters into the argument.

There is NO ability of individuals to negotiate wages with employers. The employers have all, 100%, of the power and leverage.

That's not true. I have 13 years of experience in my field (I work in Healthcare) and because of the extreme demand for my job, and the massive turnover rate, I was able to negotiate myself a higher pay rate than my agency to go staff at the facility I work now. I have always lived in the greater Portland area.
Marxists, particularly overeducated yuppies like this lady, have no idea what actual workers live like.

Supply and demand is the only leverage. That's economics.

I enjoyed many of her books, but her PMC positions were off the mark. Now living in a condo, in the upscale Alexandria, Va, she is the epitome of contradiction. Teachers are not part of the petit bourgeoisie and most workers aren't. Most working people fear poverty, why, because it's time consuming and stressful. Are we too materialistic, probably, are we narcissistic, possibly a few. But narcissism is a term that has been divorced from it's original psychological meaning on the DSM. Her turn to cultural nationalism as a solution is a position I do not support.

Scandinavia and Western Europe can no longer sustain their social programs. Their citizens now face deadlines for receiving benefits. As they take in foreigners, the additional strain means a slight drop in available benefits.
Add that employers don't pay their due amount in taxes, using creative and legal loopholes, this means less gov't revenue for programs.
Finally, technology edges many jobs out of existence and companies top off their profits by being leaner. This means fewer workers, white, blue and pink collar are in demand.

Foreigners still believe in the system for a time, thus this is why they are allowing them to become citizens. It’s a way to keep it going for a while longer. While politicians and governments print out more money to sustain it all. The US is doing the same thing also.

White, or "wHyTe" isn't real, and completely ignores the cultural differences between people who descend from European immigrants. The fact that she thinks of Maine as a state that "white people have to themselves" just shows how much of an ignorant yuppie she really is.
