Have you mistaken dirty wash with dirty colors? I definitely had when I first started. I even blame the brand of paint I use. Silly me :P

@@Cafewatercolor your explanation of eye seeing and "mental adjustment " to see light and shadows or shade.👍that's what basic understanding is essential to paint or drawing regardless of type medium watercolor pencil colored or graphite oil or acrylic. Play around with paint on scrap paper or the back of old paintings or some cheaper but not bad paper =)

You are absolutely right, there are hundreds of videos on the various techniques of watercolor. However, where you excel and transcend all the others is your encouragement and motivation to persist. I look at my paintings, thinking I should try oil or acrylic, but after watching one of your videos it gets me right back to the paper and water colors.

Beautiful!! I cringed when you painted the evening sky with watery colour after painting the windmill wings with dark rust. Didn't smudge though!! Because colours are in expert hands and they obey the master!!!!

Thank you Eric! It was really helpful that you painted the exact same scene with different lighting. I think this is stuff we instinctively know, but for me, I need to actively remember this before painting a painting. Reminding myself will improve my seeing what the colors actually are in the actual lighting.

Thanks Eric for taking the time to walk us so thorough your process and doing both paintings. I would not have guessed at the light yellow wash used on the first layer of the cooler picture. It’s so subtle but a perfect example of how to train the eye to see colors not noticed. The more I watch you, the more courageous I feel about being able to do something more complicated as this. You are a gem!

Thank you Eric, for this lesson. My problem is that I do not charge the brush with enough watery color, just the opposite of what you were trying to say. Eric, this was so helpful. Clean washes are something that I try to achieve. Lately I’ve been achieving the grays a lot more. And such a neutral color can be easy to warm or cool. Also I am thrilled with my Phive light . I can’t believe I’ve been painting all these years without it. Love it

Very very helpful tips - Insistence on keeping the pallete, brush and water clean during darker/heavier pigment applications was really helpful to prevent me from chasing relative values and overworking repeatedly. How do you relate depth with loose styles of painting - it’s hard to separate foreground and mid/back when the wash layer is the same.

Thank you Eric! You are so incredibly talented and as always informative. I’m trying to return to my studio after a 3 year absence due to my husband’s passing away. Everything’s set up except putting colors on my porcelain pallets. I’ve been stuck there on my color placement. It’s beyond me why I cannot decide the color placements after decades of watercolor painting.
Start with just a few. Like 5-6 colors. So it’s more manageable ☺️
I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. I had to put my paints away for several years due to "issues" and I found I basically had to start over with my skills and knowledge. It came a lot faster than it did originally. I hope you are still painting, it is like therapy for me, I'm not in a good place without my art. Regarding color placement on the palette it depends on the shape of the palette for me... but I've found my favorite is to put my mixing colors together as groups so its extremely easy to remember which are warm/cool and who goes with who, then group my neutral tones together from light to dark, then all the "fun" colors by hue.
Another request, if you could please make a short video on making grays (by mixing different water colors) warm grays and cool grays! Thanks :-)

The students whom you trained must be very fortunate to have you as a teacher. One question, when you did the second glazing for the sky, how come the colours underneath did not come off? Great video Eric...👍👍👍
As long as the underneath layer is completely dry, glazing will be fine. Just don’t scrub it hard.
Hi, fantastic tutorials, love your paintings (I would have no hesitation to frame that value study you made for these, and put it up the wall).
Just started in watercolor (painted a terrible picture of a bird yesterday😄), so I am browsing through your material, trying not to get too overwhelmed..
I noticed at 12.40 you paint a couple of fine white masts, is that also watercolor, or did you use gouache there?

I see you work quite fast on your paintings. I work fast and like to finish a painting in the time I am given, half an hour, two hours or four hours and I and others are happy with the finished painting. When you sell a painting does what you charge ever relate to the time spent on a painting? Given more time I overwork a painting!
I think I probably missed a video somewhere but why do you start the evening view with building rather than with the sky? I am about to do an afternoon view of a farmhouse in an open landscape - should I start with the sky? The house is the focal point and it is very small but I want it to be accurate but I need to bear in mind aerial perspective and have it clearish but in the distance and focal .... - decisions, decisions!
Eric, one little question....why is my color dirty?? LOL So in all seriousness the paintings ended great but the explanation you gave the first minutes was extremely interesting and relevant at a conceptual and technical level. Great ideas and tips bro! If i may do a comment about your painting style, i have the impression that you have drawing and values and important techniques all very well controlled and working ok. IMO there is one thing you might want to try out and experiment with and that i think it may benefit the style you are going for...which is to be a lot more bolder and big, fearless with the brush strokes, and also charging a lot more pigment in the brush...an extreme example of this approach is Alvaro Castagnet and a more controlled version is Joseph as you know. Of course, they can be bold and precise and that requires experience etc. BUT, sometimes is good to practice boldness and freedom when painting without worrying about the final result, just to start to get a grasp of it and what comes out of it. Everytime i do a painting study and then a second o third version, the later version looks 100 times better because i know more about the subject and i can loosen up a lot and the end result is a lot more flowy, natural, and a lot less contrived. I hope you don't mind this comment and i just wanted to tell you this from a while but now is the day and this will be the only time i will bring this up! cheers and keep the amazing work, and keep evolving and helping us as you do! I run into the "thin wash" issue when trying to achieve very pale greys, browns, etc. Too often I wind up with a scattered mess of pigment or blotchy uneven patches, often with a darker ring. Since you need the white of the paper to give the tint, how can I avoid this? I thought some of it was water control and have switched to using a less absorbent brush and try to blot more, which has helped some, but it's still an issue. I'm using professional paint and paper.
I can hear the waves
I struggle with warm/cool and value. My tendency is to think that cool colors have darket values and this may be wrong. So how do we get the right colors for the right values?
Hi you say, , 'I am using a warmer colour' etc but you haven't said what makes a colour warmer or cooler. I always thought a red blue would be warm and a green blue would be cool but you said you added green to warm up your blue.

it's not a pen, it's just a small brush with white gouache.
