A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine, a former colleague from my life in TV, came to visit and experience narrowboat life so we went for a cruise.
We didn't get far - to the pub, in fact. But we went by boat so that's OK. This is the video of that trip.

Theme music: "Vespers" by Topher Mohr and Alex Alena, from the UA-cam music library
I still can't believe you included a glamor shot of the dog poo, it absolutely kills me 😂😂
I never get tired of that background music you chose 7 years ago. Meanwhile, I agree that the best reason for buying a narrowboat must be to get to the nearest pub. :))
One of the nicest things about narrow boats is their speed, or, more precisely, their lack of speed. They draw us back to a slower, more relaxed, and pleasant time, when the whole world as not rushing around, and people lived in the present, enjoying the small pleasures of life.
I try to follow a rule, and you may benefit from following it as well. I always try to moor within a 3 minute crawl of a pub. It is very helpful, not so much going to the pub, as returning to the boat.
Jolly decent of you to share your wisdom with me.
ok
Watching them all from the start again, the world really has changed so much.
Yes sir, you just captured what this narrowboat living is all about. What a backyard!
been watching occasionally... decided to go back to episode 1 and watch the older ones :)
doing exactly the same
same...
Honestly tops that he still has a look at the comments in old videos
I enjoy your vlogs so much, they are wonderful and you have a great sense of humor! Fan in Oklahoma, USA.
Thank you!
“... otherwise we’d drag the pontoon with us, and this is frowned upon.” 😂😂😂
The way that mooring line was tied was wrong. Those hitches are called "by the wind hitches" and they shouldn't be used except if you think waves might sweep the rope off the cleat. If you want to use a by the wind hitch, one is enough, and it should be the last turn on the cleat. "If you don't know knots, tie lots" - sure sign of the incompetent.
Or the novice, perhaps. Let's be kindly here, please.
Nick Burningham Are you UA-cam incompetent then, since you chose my comment to make your remark instead of making your own?
Incompetent it seems. Still, it seems to me that a little knowledge of knots and hitches might be appropriate.
On behalf of all civilized peoples I would like to apologize for Nick's boorish attitude. If you would like a humble suggestion on tying off to a cleat there's a good instructional video at ua-cam.com/video/BBqsF72xNSU/v-deo.html.
An extreme close up of a dog turd whilst eating my dinner.... Priceless :o)
I like to treat my viewers :-)
Hey David I've returned to the beginning!..Enjoying it emmensley....😊 thank you!!
My favorite bit is when you visited the pub again.
Greetings from Victoria, BC Canada - I've just started viewing your Vlogs and am enjoying them immensely. I like your dry humour! And lovely comments on life around you! Great videos! I'm looking forward to watching them all - eventually - as there looks to be quite a few!
A Pub Crawl on a narrow boat could be interesting.
"and we went to the pub again" ... did make me laugh but obviously the most suitable thing to do given the circumstances.
:-)
How nice to see what you are experiencing as such pretty scenery. Loved the pub with the heating stove. Food looked fantastic as well.
Am going through your videos for the 3rd time. Great way to unwind after a day. It's nice to see the beginning of The Journey, when everything was fresh and new (except for the turds, obviously). As always, your vids are very enjoyable. Good choice on the music - very appropriate, very chill. Thanks for doing taking us along with you, over the years.
Thank you so much, you are getting us through this long cold covid winter.
Canal Boat to the pub sounds perfect. It would be nice to tie up nearby and walk home.
Cheers!
Im excessively jealous of your life sir. Thank you for giving the rest of us unfortunate souls a glimpse into your life. Keep up the good work! ...
..
.
.
or I won't be able to binge watch your content which will result in me spiraling uncontrollably into a dark depression ending in me questioning the meaning of life. ;D
First video of ANY narrowboat vlog visiting a pub that I have seen. I've been watching for 6 weeks.
David , David, David . I'm soooo envious of the life you have !!!! I own a 8.5 meter sailboat and get out as often as I can but your living the dream . All the best from California
This is the most aggressively British thing I've seen in my life! When he started complaining about irresponsible dog owners I had to step away from the computer lest my blood turn to tea.
Yes, any trip to the Pub, is a nice trip.
and you did twice.
Just been introduced to this by a friend and have to say I am impressed. I love the water and rather jealous that I can't up sticks and live on the water.
Thank you (and thanks to your friend too). Living afloat is certainly very pleasant :-)
Really enjoyed this one, as you say people with dogs should clean up no matter where they walk them YUK!! Anyway would love to see you smile my sweet, you always look so serious☺ just to show how happy you are living on your lovely narrow boat...cheers and keep em coming, they are so interesting...cheers ...Monnie
What can I say - I have a serious face!
Canals and pubs..... ii intrinsically linked!
Too right!
I LUV your commentaries, here in not so sunny lately New Mexico, USA. You make me want to go back to England and be on the canals. We were there for about 3 months floating down the waterways back in 2005. I have since become wheelchair bound so my traveling days are over. That's why I am enjoy watching you have fun. Keep it up! Fondly, Marcia Huse
+Marcia Huse Hi Marcia, thank you, that's very kind. Sounds like you had a splendid time a decade ago! Is it not possible to go on wheelchair-adapted craft over there? Glad you're enjoying the videos. Cheers!
Good job , mate... Love watching true life experience on your narrow boat...Enjoy......
Cheers Miguel!
I hope you know why it's called 'winding' as in blowy and not 'winding' as in up the clock. It's because before engines were invented the boatmen used to turn the boat round with the help of the wind!
I do indeed know that.
Thank you! As an English teacher and general nautical glossary freak, this has filled in a gap in my knowledge :-)
You'd be surprised at how many boaties call it winding (as in clock). To them it's where they wind the boat around and that's it.... I think CruisingTheCut should have included this piece of historical background in his narration!
Robin Knox- Johnston, LOL the Brian Blessed of the marine world! I can just imagine how he would be on a narrow boat putting up and down pond still waters at 3mph! :-)
Another lovely combination of the practical part of undertaking a boat trip and iconic views of Northamptonshire countryside. Whenever narrow boat quarters start closing in, head to a fine local serving real British Ales and good pub food.
Kentish?! No, it's miles away from Kent and there are no boatable canals there anyway. This is Northamptonshire.
@@CruisingTheCut Oh Dear Me! Old age is working its insidious way with me: Andy, of Kent Survival, is one of my favorite 'Bushcraft' UA-camrs. For certain, Northamptonshire country is pleasing to my eye as well! I have done my best to 'make amends.'
What a scenery. And then a pub. Happy living.
At the Dunkirk dinner in 2000 I shared a table with Sir Robin Knox Johnson, he had crewed The Steam Tug Challenge on the Dunkirk Return. A very interesting guy, lots of stories of course. Raymond Baxter popped over and asked him to raise a toast, and of course the toast was The Dunkirk Little Ships. BS
Those little ships and their crews were incredible, of course.
I’m friends with the “Khaki Chums” who are military historians.
They were invited to take part in the recreation of the Little Ships journey as part of a commemoration. As in the original many of the boats used were little coastal fishing boats that were not designed to cross such water. I was told that they were very honoured to have taken part, but the journey even now was quite hairy at times (and that was without the direct trauma of the original).
They were also the first group of military historians to live in a trench at the site of the Christmas Truce football match to honour the trust shown both sides. That Christmas the story was reported all over Europe and people travelled from countries all over Europe to share with them, many bringing bottles of wine. Last time I saw my friend he still had a couple of mud-covered bottle stored up for very, very special occasions.
Pretty much the only countries in Europe whose news services didn’t at least mention what they were doing were in Britain. I find that quite shocking really.
Anyway on this Armistice Sunday I honour all those who served honourably in defence of their country, whichever country they hailed from.
Lest we forget . . .
Safe journeys everyone.
Of course you went to the Pub again.🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍
Those coal stoves are so cozy, I love snuggling up to them especially in a pub.
I agree wholeheartedly about the scourge of dog mess!
You must join the new anti-turd campaigning group that me and an earlier commenter are setting up! (See below)
+CruisingTheCut I will indeed!
I do enjoy your comments as you cruise.
Thank you
Pleased to see the ducks being feed something more healthy.
Lovely vlog, we did that bit past the pub and Crick Marina last year. thank you for the video. Keep them coming.
Like many others, came across your channel by chance and now we (my wife and I) are watching and enjoying, from episode 1. Wished we hadn't watched this one at lunchtime however :( ! Ref @ 2:30 onwards
This is what I want to see more of in Canal Videos. Pubs with different kinds of beers ,and good eats.. Watching UA-cam videos it seems Canals are becoming more popular, and that Pubs and restaurants would be popping up along the banks.
There are already hoards of pubs along the canals!! You can barely move for going past a pub!
Cruise to a pub, my kind of trip!
I like the montage music you use, sometimes makes me think of the 1980s film ‘Gregory’s Girl’. Anyone that has seen it will know what I mean.
I'm so crushing on your voice and writing style. The voice over you provided was just wonderful. I even got my question answered as I was wondering how you turned around on these narrow rivers. I would love to spend a day like this on your boat. The pub meal looked wonderful. Here in the US my dream is to build a Tiny House on a trailer bed so that I can spend a couple of years touring the United States before buying a plot of land to homestead on. It's so lovely seeing you live your dream. ~Smile! P.S. I've subscribed.
Thanks for watching & subscribing and your compliments! You can hire boats over here if you visit ;-) Best wishes with your tiny house plan. Cheers
No way, you're a local - I'm just down the road! This vid was very entertaining too, especially the turd incident - as a walking boot wearer and dog owner I feel your pain. Look on the bright side, the 7 years you'll have spent digging poop out of your boot tread has earned you another subscriber.
Thank you! I've moved a bit since then. Still in the area though and coming back that way soon.
CruisingTheCut are you still living on the boat l was thinking of having some time off been working for 38 years and was thinking of a couple of years off 🤔🇬🇧are you liking the life or just vlogs
Yes, still on the boat! Still enjoying it.
A lovely trip. Pub grub looked wonderful. The video was excellent especially the section with just the music playing. Nothing wrong with your commentaries but as you said, the peace and quiet of the cut is superb - very atmospheric.
I watched all the vids on Amazon... Then found you here! I can't seem to get enough!
Thank you. I'm about to start work on Season Four although you'll probably have watched everything in that here by the time I get it ready (a few months)
@@CruisingTheCut Hi, what's the difference between your Amazon series and your UA-cam videos?
The Prime shows are a re-packaged, slightly re-edited, enhanced (colours, sound etc) version of the YT videos, compiled into a more "TV-friendly" format. Also, where Prime ends at Season 4, YT continues (from vlog 201 onwards)
Your vlogs and yourself are awesome :)
Thank you!
Love learning about these unique boats and the beautiful scenery.
Liked the video bro, another canal boater I follow also went into that pub I think unless there is another one with the same name. He is on the Aslan and is also new to this way of life.
No, only one pub of that name on that bit and yes that would be Kevin, aka Country House Gent.
yep, keep the videos coming please, lovely to watch.
Will do!
What happen to the solar panels? This must have been prior. Just started watching your VLOG, and as a yank I have no idea why I am so interested in narrowboats, but you are living the dream. Cheers and look forward to catching up.
The early vlogs were somewhat out of order, chronologically-speaking so I hadn't had the solar installed when that one was filmed! Cheers for watching.
To help with damp, buy a few damp traps from places like 'Home Bargains' and put them in those dark places around your boat. You'll be surprised at how much moisture they draw from the atmosphere.
Good idea, cheers!
Very nice choice for the jacket - beautiful colour.
G'day greetings from Australia, well.........what a bloody nice way to live, I'm very envious. Regards John Tasmania Australia
Another splendid episode 👌 Beautiful scenery. Lovely music.
Just catching up with this, really enjoying it. Watching them all in order! I’ve got a little (24ft) fibreglass cabin cruiser on the Thames. She’s my cheap and cheerful ‘learning boat’! Planning a liveaboard year in the future when the kids are older. Not in the cruiser I hasten to add. Looking forward to the next 100+ videos!
Welcome along!
you have taken to this life style really wel,l even with the maintaince you are BRILL , Iam just going thru all the research and hopefully following you next year sometime.REALLY PLEASED IV BEEN WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS , BIG THANK YOU
Thank you - good luck :-)
Most diesels idle so slow that after starting you after confirming positive oil pressure rev the engine until the volt
meter shows the alternator is charging. Hint leave engine idling at at least 1000 rpm for around 3 minutes
after starting first thing in the morning. The higher rpm provides more cooling air when the alt is at a higher electric
load so it needs more cooling. After 3 to 5 minutes after starting the load drops off drastically.
After starting ever heard the belts squeeling? Then the noise. Stops after a few mins? It gets quiet when the
load drops exactly what I use too many words to explain
Enjoy the videos please continue.
Yes indeed, I do let it idle at revs after starting, usually while I untie the chains/ropes and lower the TV aerial. The solar means the volt meter pretty much always shows some charging, engine or not!
Nice to see the pub and the food a nice short trip.
Lovely scenes and food looked good!
:-)
I love Pub food😍
Just found your website and i'm hooked. We have mused about buying a boat but as i'm nearing 70 now i think i'll settle for your blogs. Liked your trip on the Thames.
Better hurry! I'm finding my '70's to be slippery slope time! 8-(
Happy new year! sorry about the downer of dogmess but otherwise looks like a lovely boaty pubcrawl. Ever noticed how you steer better after 1 drink ;)
I shall have to do some experiments :-) Happy New Year to you!
reviewing your first vlogs, pre professional vlog crew days, still fun, new vlogs aere good, found vandemonium, fun and informative. thanks, very good to get out via vlogger in these days of covid, shutdowns etc.
Love a nice custard
instead of a hat , which looks ridiculous, you could fill a bag with tea towels and then sellotape it to your head. keep dry as well then. Dry and ridiculous or wet and ridiculous? Its a no brainer. Great series of films mate! Very clear and concise!
my tip is.... a dutch steel cruiser is a better layout, can be picked up cheaper, has a garden....... rear deck steering position and are more sea going. Different chicken altogether , different vibes, but something to try in the future,. Cheers dude!
Maybe but not cheap and entirely unsuitable for the narrow canals of the Midlands where I mostly live. Cheers
i got lucky then! mine was. and its been surveyed. I sense a little extream narrowboat love? I insulted you didnt I ! DUTCH CRUISER !!! HOW DARE YOU EVEN SUGGEST IT! TRAITOR!!!
my son said. Thank god you didnt get that narrowboat, its just a box, lol...... awkward, poky, lol..... I THREW HIM OUT THE HOUSE !!! DONT WORRY ! all boats r good !
Walking Freeman I heard the enclosed steering positions of those barges often accumulated engine fumes leading hallucinogenic manic rants. ;-D
Happy New year mate. great video keep them coming.
New subscriber here from beautiful Vancouver Canada and I'm enjoying your videos! Thanks for showing how a narrowboat turns around. Cheers!
I want to visit Vancouver one day! Thanks for watching :-)
You're doing a great job, lad. I watched your whole buing and build awhile back but havnt been back since. I really enjoy these. Subbed after the first three and will watch 'em all! Happy New Year from California!
Terrific, thank you! Hope things are all good over there :-)
Hi David, Steve here thanks for your living in your boat video blog's .
Very interesting, planning on getting a boat .
I'll let you know when I'm on water :)
Keep up with blog's :)
Your engine oil was very clean for a diesel. I presume it had been recently changed.
I always enjoy your very creative narrative, I suspect your a writer of some interesting fiction.
Unfortunately, I am not :-(
@@CruisingTheCut May I suggest that you could, creative writing flows from your mind rapidly.
I've been working my way though your excellent videos but was concerned about the lack of mention of visits to pubs. On my canal trips the location of the next watering hole was usually the first order of the day when route planning. Oh and I'm with you, pudding for lunch!
Loving the montage. Now I'm starting to see the appeal.
It's glorious when the sun's out
Planning a canal boat rental holiday for this year. Thank you for the tutoring! My pressing question (being American): Do the Brits travel by boat on the left side of the canal they way they do on the road?
No! Right hand side (well, strictly you drive down the middle as it's the deepest but when you pass, you drive on the right). International maritime convention, apparently.
CruisingTheCut got to love the yanks been to USA lots of times they really love us Brits 🤔🇬🇧meet loads and still get xmas cards nice😉
great video as always, looking forward to watching your adventures this year, happy new year and keep them coming.
Thanks Robert!
Having just started watching the vlogs I am already hooked, great series. Hope to see you out on the cut sometime in my narrowboat "Yum Sing" (The name is a chinese drinking toast like "cheers" or "good health") How about a vlog on interesting boat names that you come across?
OK, I'll look out for you, cheers!
Woolly beanies don’t do a thing for me either 🥴 but who cares as long as your head n ears are warm ☺️. Just joined your adventure thx to my daughter who suggested it. She says she’s learnt heaps from watching your vlogs even though we live in Oz n she has a camper not a narrow boat 🤣.
:-)
Lovely video.
Ta
Beautiful
amazing and very pretty!
Can this man`s life get any better I ask myself?
Yes. It could stop raining. :-)
I'm sure others have noticed that coincidentally there are always twenty something 'dislikes' for each video...is this the same people just going through every one and disliking it?...people are so bizarre.
I've noticed this as well, and not just on this channel. Pretty much every channel that I watch regularly, has it's more or less fixed share of grumpy... crikey, I don't even know what to call them without sounding overtly rude or obnoxious... However, they allways seem to be there and they're allways grumpy and miserable. It's like in most families, isn't it... There's allways an uncle, say, who is the grumpy one and allways manages to spoil any family gathering...
Bots, look I have no idea if it is but that’s what people say.
It's personal I think. I had 1 persistent 'disliker' when I used to upload and they were there with the thumbs down within minutes of publishing.
How about a gopro camera on the bow, so you can merge in video from the fixed camera to give a feeling of how life goes on the boat while you're steering the boat.
Yes, if I had infinite money and even more time to edit I'd have more cameras on board ;-)
look at the brickwork at (4:00). I doubt they could do that nowadays.
Lovely work there. Happy New Year to and yours.
Thanks David :-)
Happy new year
keep the videos coming, I also thought you had too much oil, then I read the previous comment. :-D
I wondered how many people would pick me up on the oil ;-) good to know viewers are watching out for me (and paying attention!!)
yeppers this is the life..good on ya man!
:-)
Sublime.
:-)
Great video! ( as always :) )
+z falą Thanks!
Thank you for these wonderfully insightful videos. Would it be possible to show us around a chandlery to see all that is available to purchase for the marine and canal boat lovers and what is available for services too at a typical marina in a future video Thank you and cheers!.
I like those ideas! Yes, if I can find a suitable chandlery I'll do it.
Yes ! ! ! Do a dreamers' and schemers' special ! ! !
The 11 dislikes are from ducks.
"...and we went to the pub again." 😅
Sounds like a life I would very much enjoy. However, here in Manitoba that would be impossible to live on a narrowboat. we get temperatures down to -30 F. The currents of the rivers here would be more than the engine could handle. On the lakes you would not want to be once the wind picked up, as you would be capsized or on the opposite side of the lake from where you started.
They're definitely most suited to the tranquil canals of the UK!
I am really enjoying the videos! Keep up the great work:)
I jove the pub. A great looking sandwich
Excellent music
You look so young here. That's life on the Narrowboat eh?!( Comparing the then and now videos!) 2015 - 2019.
Great video , happy new year.
Ta :-)
Happy New Year! Loving your videos and great to see you taking to narrowboat life like a duck to water - dog turds not withstanding. The jacket and hat look great.
The weather hasn't been too wintery here this year (so far), but I'd like to know what living conditions are like inside the boat - have you experienced much condensation/damp? Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next update.
Thank you. Conditions inside the boat are fine. The stove's toasty and despite lots of rain and wind, it's all rather splendid. Yes, I do get lots of condensation round the windows but I mop it up every now and again to help to protect the wood.
I also discovered yesterday that the side of the mattress against the hull was damp (underneath is fine due to a slatted base). Luckily my bed was built to be extendable sideways by six inches so instead of using that for a bigger mattress I've simply pulled the 4-foot mattress out by an inch to help ventilate.
