We bought both versions. I picked up our American version from GameStop today, and our Japanese one is on its way. In terms of quality, it appears Japan has once again received the better package. Even the fold out box is so much nicer than ours, which is just stacked in together. It would have been nice to see a pair of NES controllers with the US version as well. The gold cart is... okay, I guess.
Addendum- I'm happy we were able to grab both versions before they are all gone. We don't support digital only media for obvious reasons. In 10 years, if I decide to play it, I know it won't be delisted by Nintendo.

I got both US and Japanese versions for a complete NWC collection, I love the differences between the two versions with collectibles. I also got the Club Nintendo NWC trucker hat, a whopping 1200 points but thankfully I had enough.
What I like about the US version is the gold NWC cartridge, for those that don’t know back in the day in 1990 during the NWC championships Nintendo Power Magazine held a giveaway contest for an official NWC cart, the only caveat was that about only 30 gold NWC carts were ever made and are extremely rare and cost serious money. NWC carts(gray or gold) are some of the rarest pieces of video game history, period.
So it’s nice of Nintendo to give a nod to the almost non-existent gold cart since it was so highly sought after.

The North American packaging was more compact, with all the goodies jammed inside that box that was super hard to open (and it was great to finally look at all the stuff once I was able to get inside the box). But the Japanese packaging seems like they went the extra step to make it even more special, plus those Famicom controllers are *chef’s kiss*. Wish the North American set came with an option to bundle the NES controllers with the set, but I see they’re currently discounted on the Nintendo website, so there’s that.

It's interesting to see how this has been presented internationally. With the Super Mario Bros Movie showing young Japanese fans a version of Mario who owned a frontloading NES, and playing the Super Show theme song, I felt Nintendo had become keen to embrace the system's international history. It's curious that they've muddied the waters by packaging this with the Famicom artwork and Famicom controllers instead of the US equivalents.
