    Jellyfish need the cylinder tanks, they can only swim one way and can’t stop or turn back, they also can’t see or feel their environment so if they get stuck on a corner they’re gonna just be there and it’s gonna damage their bell. It’s actually the perfect animal to abuse because it doesn’t have a central nervous system to even feel pain

    • @b1oh1
      @b1oh1 Рік тому +11

      I never knew they could only swim one way. Dumb question, how are only certain species located in specific areas? I know there are underwater currents, but they're not circular. It seems like there would be a traceable path of jellyfish migration. I need to find some books and documentaries on this. I'm thoroughly interested.

    • @microwavedcheetos
      @microwavedcheetos Рік тому +26

      @@b1oh1 they’re all dependent on the sea current, that’s why some beaches became infested with them during the monsoon season. There are also freshwater jellyfish that got trap in lakes when the sea level used to be higher

    • @AzraelThanatos
      @AzraelThanatos Рік тому +9

      I think it's more of that they shouldn't have corners. There's the vertical disc tanks that are being sold with jellies as kits and the cylinder tanks as well that normally have a very controlled flow.
      Of course, there are a few that don't require it, but those are tanks that probably need permits because something like irukandji or similar aren't ones you really should be having at home...

    • @jygergruz9562
      @jygergruz9562 Рік тому +2

      Actually that is sort of a myth. Jellyfish don’t need cylinder tanks, but an unexposed flow creator and certain direction of flow. Corners do not damage their bell.

    I used to care for jellies when I worked as an aquarist and they definitely need a tank that doesn't have places where the current stagnates (i.e. corners). If jellies settle onto a surface it will actually start to rot their bells and they can get really bad infections. Upside-down jellies requirements are completely different from barrel jellies requirements for sure but they still all need ample space and a strong current!

      I'm not on that level of aquascaping. However, I'm pretty active on Reddit in the aquarium and aquascaping subreddits. There are way more people asking for thoughts and critiques there than you'd think. Many do it "correctly" as well, by creating a dry run, getting the positioning right before even selecting the plants. Then they're aided by CO2 and nutrients. They look amazing.

    6:01 I think they think the fish are eating the plants due to the holes in them which is actually a nutrient deficiency

    How do you have a tank that's somehow more beautiful than the wild and it's your first tank?? Christine H, explain??

      Thanks Anne! 😊
      I researched - spent hours scrolling through the AGA competition tank photos - everyday for about 4 months just studying, decided on CO2 quickly, and slowly put everything together - though I wish I had a rimless tank (I have on pre-order but still waiting). I spend hours with my tank - more than I should (3 hours ++ every Monday is a typical trim), plus additional quick changes (everyday when needed) if I see the slightest inbalance to get thing back on track; I watch and photograph the changes, and you have no idea how many plants I have pulled out because they didnt work/didnt fit. Ive changed lights and filters on more than one occassion trying for optimal growth. My LFS is my happy place. My shoes might have holes but I am amassing a collection of wood and rocks to start my second aquascape. 😅
      Im also lucky to have a supportive partner who sees how involved I am and views this as art and not just a fish tank (he gets game time!) and helps me when I have to travel.
      Lastly, I always try to have fun with it. Once I found Chirs and the Cory gang - I knew I wanted to submit, so I pushed myself even harder to get the perfect picture. :)

      Search for large drainage canals or shallow streams/creaks in your area. You can harvest your own native plants along the bank or in the shallow areas. Make sure you rinse them very well and quarantine them in case they have parasites. Many of the plants that grow at the very edge of the water will also grow under the water

      @@ComancheWarrior63 thanks for the advice, the only problem is that all the water areas near us are infested by salt water crocs (live in Australia) but i will stil try :)

      @@fortheanimalz3295 👀🏃🐊. You can try harvesting with a long pole. Maybe drag some away from the water with a rake? Or possibly search for plants that get washed away from the water by heavy rain. I have harvested plants from drainage canals in cities. If you can find any in drainage canals I would probably keep them in a large container for several months before I placed them in my aquarium. Putting a few inexpensive fish (feeder goldfish) in with the plants will provide fertilizer for the plants and are a good indicator of parasites. If the fish remain healthy and have good growth then you should be safe from parasites
