      If you're in the USA please don't forget about getting snap benefits and unemployment. Even if you have a job you can still generally qualify for something especially since your income change has come with a loss of income. I know it's tough and you feel really bad about your situation but that's what these things are for; to help people who need it. And you shouldn't think of yourself badly just because things are a worst than they were; you are a person and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect; especially to yourself.

We got the Walmart card that pays 5% cash back on all pickup orders so we're getting $12 to $16 a month back on our groceries. Of course the card balance is always paid in full to avoid outrageous interest rates and we will load it periodically if we want to use it for other cash back necessities.

    Can I just say, 1) you're hilarious and watching your videos makes my day, but also 2) your videos and advice have absolutely changed my life in terms of budget and money advice. I'm a new-ish home maker, and I came from a family that didn't have much. My mom was (and still is to this day) very much of the mind set that life just happens to her and she has no control. In some ways that is true, but I vowed a long time ago to make sure I take responsibility for the outcome regardless of who is at fault, because that's all I can control. All that to say, we experienced a lot of food insecurities and housing insecurities back then. Now in my own home, I knew there had to be a better way to do things and when I started watching your videos a few years ago and implementing your advice, our finances completely changed for the better. I've recently paid of $15k in school debt, been able to save for an emergency, AND we are able to feed ourselves really good quality meals for $400/month including a budget for sale items to put in the freezer for future "bad times". Thank you for being a mentor to me, you have made all the difference for us.

    I’m one of those people who have to drive to get groceries. My budget for 2 people averages $500 a month. It’s 60 ish miles to “town”, so I plan accordingly. I usually use about 1/3 a tank of fuel depending on a head wind. I could definitely walk to the local store and save wear and tear on my pickup, but then my budget would be blown. It’s absolutely cheaper for me to make the trip. I fuel up before I leave town because fuel is cheaper there. I make the trip once a month.

    • @burkhardproksch637

      It sounds like going 60 mi once a month is cheaper. The local store is probably an expensive mom and pop store. Probably in a rural area. The trip gets them to chain stores, in a city. Going only once a month is what keeps the price down. In this scenario they are doing what works best in this area

      @@amiegamble1678 This is the general lack of planning in the States. A residential area here but 60 miles to go shopping, how stupid is that, even if it's only once a month, that's 60 miles too many that you use up and at today's prices alone.

    • @SymonSays
      @SymonSays 4 місяці тому +3

      You should ignore the people who are complaining about your once a month shopping trip. I live in a very rural area, and the local grocery store is double the price of the Walmart and other stores that are in the city (which is an hour away). I go once or twice a month to get all my shopping done, and definitely save money, even when you factor in the gas. Not everyone lives urban or suburban, with an Albertsons or Walmart close by.

    • @burkhardproksch637
      @burkhardproksch637 4 місяці тому +1

      @@SymonSays Yes, why is that, that's the bad planning in the USA. You only think about the people in the cities but not about the fact that they also live outside and are forced either to go shopping at high prices or, even more stupidly, to drive many miles or sit in the car for hours.
      How good it is that I live in Europe where you can find a shopping opportunity within a short time and don't have to buy expensive things. Sad for the USA.

      @sct4040 I think that's the issue. I need baskets to separate things. I'm just need to measure to see what sizes I need.
      We have a French door fridge with the bottom freezer. There are two shelves, and the bottom is divided. Right now, I have all the chicken breast on the bottom left (our main protein) and all the rest of the meats on the bottom right. The problem is the top shelf. That's where I keep things like bagged french fries, dumplings, overflow spices etc. Everything gets all messy and you have to dig through it making it even more messy.
      The spices stay organized because I have them in a basket and alphabetized. So yep, I definitely need baskets!!

    I really love baby/mini corn. It’s in a tin/can mostly here in Norway and it has become so expensive. Before it was always on sale when different stores had “Kronesmarked”/“dollar market”, and I bought a lot then. No sale on it since January 😢😢😢 So I stopped eating it. Paying nearly 3 dollars for a tin with 28 calories are not worth it. For two weeks ago a small store chain had it again on “Kronesmarked”, normally they don’t. I emptied out 4 different stores, one two times, and I am not ashamed 😂😂😂 I bought around 40 tins with the use of a backpack, and took the bus, plus walking, and with crutches. THATs how much I love those baby corn, but will only eat them for a sale price 😂🥰😋
    I think people here mostly will get me. Normally I never empty out shelf’s like that, but for baby corn I will 😂❤ (I can eat 1-2 tins a day if I am not rationing 😂)
    Love from Johanne, Norway 🇳🇴

    Interesting that the prices between stores differ so much in the us. Here in Germany where I live I have noticed for a lot of products the prices for namebrand products are often the same between stores even discount vs supermarket. Also quite a few namebrand products go on sale at different stores at the same time or just a week apart for the same saleprice. And the storebrand stuff is often the same price across stores as well. There a still differences mainly in selection and quality but I find it remarkable how similar the pricing is.

I get butter and bananas at a chain gas station in our area and I buy several pounds of butter and freeze it. I also freeze excess produce when I hit a great sale and buy more than we need. Comes in handy for so many things! I implement everything you talked about. My husband was stunned when he saw how I was always able to find the best deals. There is a home improvement store in our area that all year long offers 11% store rebates. They usually have what we need and they sell certain groceries as well. DT is a few blocks down from Walmart which Target is in the same shopping center of DT. As I’m leaving the shopping center I can head to a nearby Kroger to shop their deals. There are two other grocery stores that I never shop at, however, I did shop at one of them when it first came to town.
    My discount store is the other direction of where all my shopping can be.
    Yep I don’t pay full price on most things. Most of the time I buy my clothes from the discount racks at Walmart. What gets me the most times is the clothes at Aldi in the Alley of Shame.

    I hesitate before stocking up, because you can get into the mentality of buying just because it's on sale. If you stock up, you've got to manage your inventory really well, because letting items go bad in your pantry kills any deal you got by buying on sale. I will buy one extra unless it's an item we use every day and the deal is incredible, and remember that things go on sale on a regular cycle.
