Hello, Friends! I'm Wendy the Waste Truck.
You may have seen me driving down your street each week helping to
    pick up your trash!
But where does all that garbage go?
Every day, thousands of pounds of garbage are dumped at a place called a landfill.
Landfills across the United States are filling up fast!
The garbage you throw out also causes pollution and uses up Earth’s natural resources.
But you can help fix this problem!
With a little bit of practice, you can be an official Planet Protector just like me! It’s easy!
Instead of throwing all that garbage in the landfill, we are going to recycle some of it!
Recycling is what happens when we turn our garbage into something new!
But how do you know if something can be recycled or if it belongs in the landfill?
If you stick to the basics, it’s simple.
These items should always go in your recycling bin to be turned into something new.
Metal cans like tin and aluminum, paper & cardboard, cartons, glass bottles and jars, and plastic tubs, jugs, and bottles.
So how does recycling work? It’s starts with you!
Once you have properly sorted your garbage and recyclables, it’s time to bring them to the curb!
Each week, your driver comes by to pick up your recyclables and deliver them to our recycling center.
Recyclables are dumped out of the truck and loaded onto large conveyor belts that will help us separate them into piles.
There are many ways that we separate the recyclables including workers, screens, optical sorting machines and magnets.
Workers help sort through the material to remove items that don’t belong.
Large rubber stars rotate to separate large pieces of cardboard and paper from other materials.
Stars rotate to sort out glass pieces which fall off the conveyor belt into a pile.
Magnets rotate above the conveyor belt to pull out tin and other metal cans.
Aluminum cans are separated by a special magnet that creates an Eddy Current.
The Eddy Current repels aluminum cans away from other material.
Optical Sorting machines use a special light that scans each container and separates it by type.
Once sorted, material is sent to the baler.
The baler takes the material and compacts it into large cubes, or bales.
Bales are loaded into big semi-trucks and taken away to different places across the country to be turned into new products!
So what happens next? Let’s take a look at what your recyclables get turned into!
Your plastic milk jugs and soap bottles are melted down and made into park benches!
Water bottles like this one are chopped up, melted and used in clothing!
Did you know people throw away enough plastic bottles to circle the earth 4 times!?
Aluminum cans are melted and turned into airplane parts! So cool!
Tin cans are also melted and made into parts for cars!
Glass bottles and jars can be recycled over and over again and are turned into more glass bottles and jars.
Magazines are turned into a pulp and re-rolled into toilet paper and tissue!
Paper like school-work and newspapers are turned into more paper products like egg cartons.
If we recycle all of our newspapers, we would save about 250 million trees each year.
It takes small steps to make a big impact.
Recycling is easy if you just stick to the basics.
Remember to recycle just your metal cans, paper & cardboard, cartons, glass bottles and jars, and plastic tubs jugs, and bottles and you too can be an official Planet Protector!
