- We have a chat to Canadian actor Shaun Johnston, who you may know playing Jack Bartlett, or Grandpa Jack, in the Canadian TV show Heartland.
We have a chat about how he got into acting originally, how it feels to play a much older character in Heartland and we also hear about his music and whether there is a music career for him on the horizon.

Grew up with Bonanza, The Big Valley, Laredo, High Chaparral, on and on. More recently, McLeod's Daughters. Just found and watched 14 seasons of Heartland. What a treasure! I am a fan for life. I hope the series never ends. Great stories, acting, gorgeous scenery, and a feast for the soul with those beautiful horses, my earliest love. Every girl's dream.

I love heartland because it supports the traditional family dynamic in a time where the family is being destroyed and it instills hope in people who are for family values.
I agree. It is hard to find a sitcom now days, that depicts a traditional and wholesome family. Most sitcoms now are about a lot of dysfunction in the families. It stresses me out trying to watch them. lol So I don't.

I love the show too, watched it on Heartland channel up to season 14 episode 10, haven't seen or find where to watch the episodes after that.. do you know where I can find the seasons after 14 E. 10????

Shaun.... your role in Heartland is what men, dad's must have to show how amazing God we have. Your role shows just that... caring, loveable, strength, character. Thank you very much. I tried to build that character into my life dealing with my wife, kids, sons in law but more the legacy I want to leave for my grandchildren..... can't wait for series 14 and 15 and 16 etc.

So wonderful to be able to see Shaun just being himself, instead of being in character as Jack on Heartland. Not that we all don't love Jack tremendously (is there anyone out there who doesn't?!), however, I must admit that I I love Shaun himself even more than I love Jack (if that's possible!). Shaun truly is a wonderful man; humble and grateful for all that life has brought to him. It was extremely interesting to hear how a twist of fate (needing ONE more credit in law school!) and signing up for what he thought was going to be a simple drama class changed his entire world and his entire life!! Truly validates that Shaun's entire acting career was truly meant to be.....Shaun Johnston was meant to play Jack Bartlett. Shaun Johnston IS Jack Bartlett and I can't imagine anyone else playing that role....EVER! Shaun has worked hard to perfect his craft as portraying Jack; thinking about and practicing Jack's walk and voice and facial expressions and that definitely shows on camera!! Want to thank you personally Shaun for taking your time to do this interview and for allowing all of us loyal and devoted fans to see a bit of who you truly are. Now we all love you even more!!

One of the best series of all time and Jack is one of the best characters of all time. A great family series. Great to get to know Shaun a little bit better. We have watched every show and eagerly await the next season.

Such an amazing show. I watch it on Netflix in SA and I think you Shaun are the "heart" of Heartland excuse the pun. I have never ever been so taken by a series before. Heartland characters are becoming like family when family is not around. Thank you all for such a heartwarming experience especially Durning these turbulent times. Love the entire cast.

Haven’t seen mr johnston until Heartland. Seems like a great down to earth man
I have no idea how I found this show but once I started watching it, I was hooked and began to binge watch. I really like the characters. It helps that I love horses as well and the nature views on the show. The actors, the scripts , the horses and the country side; what's not to love? BTW, I started taking horseback riding lessons at 62.
I love Jack. He is amazing. His example is fantastic. Shaun you are special.

Shaun you are such a huge part of Heartland. Grandpa always holds it (the show) together. When I’m done watching all these series, I’ll start over again. Every actor reminds me of someone’s character I know. Such a good show, I’m grateful for it.

Year after year this show never disappoints. What a wonderful show and it has made me fall in love with Canada and cowboy culture. I hope it goes on for years to come.
I watch Heartland everyday and can't wait to watch Season 16. My Favorite was Ty's and Amber's Wedding. I hope Alisha Newton comes back, I miss her. Keep Heartland Going, I Love all of them 💓

My husband and I love Heartland! We are watching it for the first time, started in season 1 and currently on season 11. We love Jack and all the actors.
It's great to see the story line of the writers, I love the life built around Jack, he truly is the back bone of the Bartlett, Fleming Borden family.

My mother and I have nothing but love for Jack we have spent a month now watching 14 seasons during the pandemic. love love love it. We are in love with entire story.

Love our Canadian home grown actors and actresses. Just like regular folks down the road .
The character of Jack Bartlett is one of my favorites of all my cowboy heroes. He is in excellent company with the western heroes of the past. Bret Maverick (James Garner),Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) and Jess Harper (Robert Fuller). I am so happy that Heartland is on my favorite teevee channels. Heartland is really an excellent show. I rank it in high level right up there with some of the old teevee westerns of Maverick, Laramie, Wagon Train and Rawhide. It is refreshing to watch a show that focuses on family values.
I hope they never stop making heartland episodes/ seasons :)

I just discovered Heartland a month ago when I was looking for something to watch while sitting at home due to COVID! I absolutely LOVE this series and Jack is my favorite character! The show is so clean and family-oriented.

I just finished watching Heartland on Netflix! I love this show and the diversity! Jack is the man!!! Love this character! He has such a solid foundation and good heart. I cried when I thought he had died! They really got me with that one! Ty’s close call was next, and then Tim. I am a lover of horses and this was what drew me in! I cried every time a horse was injured or died! Great story and great casting for all characters!❤️

It's one of the things I like about Canadian actors that so many of them know how to act and they have minds.

You maybe right I stumbled on this by accident but I noticed each episode really resonated me it's like its forcing lessons on me with how deep they touch all of the characters stories and aspects of their own characters too, certainly make me think about my own life and I can relate to the stories a lot. IT's so subtle and varied and beautiful and heart breaking
(watching the story with Lou and Peter breaking news to their family right now and that is done so well, so realistically and the flash backs and Lou's realisation of being wrong about what she believed was right and her back and forth mood swings in dealing with it. I didnt like Lou that much at the beginning I thought she was too contemporary and materialistic but this storyline really changed my mind on her, it's so needed. My first drama series on Netflix was Jane the Virgin and the extreme scenes put me off but this one for a Netflix series is just AMAZING and the detailed interviews with these actors explains it
It's also awesome and lovely that they give Native actors plenty of screen time and legitimate stories interwoven gently with the main characters as well

Hi Shaun, what a great show you guys have put together with Heartland. I have binge watched more than 200 episodes in less than a month. I almost feel this family and the events are real and I have known you guys for ever. You guys really got me interested in horses. Watched Belmont Stakes for the first time because of you, and am visiting Alberta next month. Heck I even bought a Rodeo Tie. Love you all and God bless you for giving us so much happiness 💕
I found this show recently and have watched every episode available so far. The best and most addictive show I have ever enjoyed. The cast and the story lines are great but the horsemanship content is amazing.

Jack reminds me of my dad. Tim reminds me of my ex-husband from back when we were married 45 years ago. I am indebted to Shaun Johnston's dad and grandfather, as well as Jack's portrayal of them, to help fill a deep void in my life. My sister and I are the last members of the immediate Wisconsin farm family that we grew up in. In the early days, after my brothers went to work off their CO's at a veteran's hospital out in Denver, CO, I was in line to be the "son" to fill my brother's shoes with the farmwork along with painting barns and houses and helping to get that huge woodpile in the Fall. My sister, who reminds me of "Lou", still stayed in the house with my mom baking pies and cakes, etc. while I helped with the farm chores, running the tractor, and running machinery out in the fields. I was glad to find someone I could relate to in your Heartland sister, June, who was eager to take her brother's place so he could go to the rodeo down in Nashville in the states. All these years later, I'm still proud of all those years that I worked outside alongside my dad. God blessed me with good horses and an amazing English Shepherd (barnyard collie) type of dog for companionship. Now I am 69 years young. I'm a mom, and I'm a grandma. I miss my dad and my ex-husband, who, like Peter in Heartland, stayed involved in our "kids" lives. The "kids" are in their later 30's and early 40's now. My kids help me to live at their home/s so I don't end up in one of those prisons called a nursing home! I've gone back from the beginning and watched Heartland over again to feel the healing balm it provides for my soul. Thank You!

Never seen heartland before until my friend told me about the show. I absolutely love it.I am on season 11 now and just heard season 14 will happen. Would love to see more of Kerry James and Graham Wardle interaction. They seem to have so much fun on the show and it comes through on their acting.

Jack is my favorite character on Heartland. Love all of the characters...some have had to grow on me, but Jack is the one who holds everyone together. I was scared for a one in either season 12 or 13 during that fishing trip that they was getting rid of Jack. I was like oh no you can't do that I'll stop watching the show if Jack's not there.
I have watched the series from the first to the last on Netflix all in a matter of a week and a half. 200+ total episodes! I love Heartland. I love horses. I love some characters and don't like some but I love the show! The writers and directors have done a great job on this series.

I live in the U.S. and I absolutely love the Heartland series, I have watched all the seasons through 3 times and I'm getting ready to watch season 14, with some apprehension because I know what happens. I hope it doesn't change the dynamic of the show too much. Following these characters from season 1 to season 13, they feel like family.
I often times wish I had a grandpa like Jack.
And although I don't have any horses of my own, I feel like I've learned a lot about them just watching this show.
