Stopped playing in high school at the peak of my musical career cause of things going on in my family. Stupid. Never should have given it up. Now, I'm hoping to get myself back to where I was. I'm scared as hell. That moment when you know where you've been, but your lost and scared to begin.

out of all the teachers, experts or people giving advice this guy is the most comprehensive and understanding of them all. He started from the very beginning talks slow, makes sure you've got it before moving along. my confidence is higher than ever. thanks

The teacher specifically explains and demonstrates some step by step basics that must form a proper foundation in the very beginning in order to have good technique and a beautiful sound. Those with keen interest, willingness and intelligence are not bored learning step by step from the beginning. Some of the most renown string teachers have their beginning students play pizzicato for months before moving on to bowing. The result is better technique and tone than teachers and students who rush the process...

I think I will have to spend some time learning this way. Trying to get the bowing synced up to my left hand is very difficult for me. This is one of the best videos I have seen. It is helping me out a lot.

I just now have the fiscal opportunity to buy a cello (after 9 years of wanting one XD). The thing is, I don't have enough money to get lessons. So these types of videos have been helping me learn all I can before I even pick up a cello. Without these videos I would be lost. So thank you very much!

I have played the cello for about 3years. Everytime after I practiced only less than a hour I kind of felt pain in my shoulder. Watching your lesson, I realized I got serious problems in bowing. Thank you so much for your precious lessons.

I recommend visiting sharmusic.com. Their new instruments aren't the cheapest, but they're a very good value. If you keep an eye out, or subscribe to their email list, you can get a less-expensive used instrument that's still excellent quality. Or you could just rent one for a few months. If you call their 800 number, you get to talk to a real live string player, which I think is pretty cool.

This is very clear and covers everything in a lot of detail, but when you have until December (the end of the first semester at University) to get to grade 1 and have to take a mock ABRSM exam at the end of the module, you need a simple fool proof way of doing it in that amount of time.

An average beginning cello runs around $1000-2000, a bow from $100-500 and a hard case is about $400.
Professional instruments (for use in a full time orchestra) typically start at around $100,000, though you will find people playing on cheaper instruments for various reasons. A professional bow can cost anywhere between $4,000 and millions of dollars. The highest price ever for a cello is $20 million.

@MrBigmike829 It could be one of two problems: 1. the pegs could just be slightly loose. in that case, you can buy some liquid from a strings shop that when you put it on the pegs, they will have more friction. or 2. the pegs may be too loose, and you'll have to replace them which could get expensive. If you want the liquid, ask a person in a musical store. sorry, i forget what the liquid is called.

is it actually possible to learn the cello primarily using internet videos? I was thinking of only seeing a tutor for cello once a month or every fortnight.

@Bludhoundz8 Essentially, you need to try to have the bow perpendicular to whatever string you are playing on and to keep it straight. He also demonstrates the way to hold the bow and an exercise to help you get the feel for the bow grip. I'm not sure what you mean by lightly, but how hard you press down is up to you and the music you are playing, but don't press so hard that it makes a grinding sound or so soft that you can't really hear anything at all obviously haha. Hope I helped, good luck!

Thank you for the lesson. I play my violin similiar to the cello style. I place it on my legs and lean it on my chest, with a cushion, more comfortable this way.

I'm a cello newbie and my right arm and finger tips were HURTING the first few days. But that's the small price to pay for beautifull music. :)

@MrBigmike829 The cello is tuned in 5ths, with the highest string being A, then D, G, and C. if you're cello has never been tuned before, then you should get a professional to tune it for you until you know the notes by ear. If you want to try tuning by yourself, you can reply to me.

if you are taller than five feet, you will be able to use a full-size (4/4) cello. Cellists from four and a half feet up to five feet tall will feel comfortable with a 3/4 size cello. From four feet to four and a half feet, try a 1/2 size cello. Even smaller sizes are available. If you fall in the middle between two sizes, you will be more comfortable with the smaller size.

@whatitsjustme if you or your grandmother arent very small, you should take an 4/4 Cello. It´s the ´´normal´´ size for adult people.
