The guitarist is Daryl Stuermer, who has been the touring guitarist (and occasionally bass player) for Genesis for 40 years, following Steve Hackett’s departure
Patrice Rushin just killed it at the 11:22 mark. Such a fantastic change of sound from the strings. She was such a respected musician at a young age to be able to play with some great jazz artists.
I love Jean-Luc Ponty! Saw him live in 1983 and he blew the place away. it was an outdoor venue in the Summertime so it was warm and he played during sunset...fantastic ambiance!
Jean-Luc Ponty is awesome and was part of one of the great prog-rock and jazz a fusion shows I ever saw. Time was 1975, at the old Cape Cod Colosseum with the eye opener of a first band being Golden Earring who were on the Moontan tour and did that amazing album in it entirety. They freaked us out as Radar Love was just getting airplay. Man they were on point and we knew we were at a great show. Second on the Bill was King Crimson at the peak of the John Wetton era and they did the entire Red album along with much of their other albums. Robert Fripp sat in a darkened corner most of the set, sending out incredible guitar textures and solos, raging in a controlled way. Amazing set, almost 2 hours long. Then the headliner was John Mclauflin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, with Michael Narada Walden on killer drums and Jean Luc dueling John in seismic runs into infinity. Great Jazz Rock Fusion by a bunch of masters. That show got out at one AM and we were exhilarated and exhausted. Those were the days, that show cost us $6.00 a ticket! Had to share, been awhile since I listened to Jean Luc. Also check out the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jan Hammer on Keyboards and Billy Cobham on drums give John players who can keep up with him. Best Jazz Rock Fusion band I ever saw for sure. Enjoy! 🎵
Wow, you just took me back 46 years to Austin, Texas where this album was in regular rotation at my house when it came out in '76! I hadn't listened to it in decades. Daryl Stuermer's very John McLaughlinesque guitar solo came right back to me, and Patrice Rushen's fine piano solo too. Loved your reactions. Thanks so much!
Ponty is excellent. I got to see him play with Return to Forever in Grand Prairie Tx in 2011. It was a great show, and Zappa Plays Zappa opened up for RTF, also a great performance. Yeah Nick, that's where I know this song from, Rite of Strings.
I was just watching another reaction video of Zappa live in Sweden, playing "Dupree's Paradise", in which Ponty has a scorching violin solo - small world!
Aurora is such a great album. This track is one of the more laid back numbers on it. Daryl Stuermer on guitars before his time touring with Genesis. He's a terrific soloist. Great to hear guys.
Jean Luc Ponty is a very talented musician, I recommend Mirage from the album Oceano Enigmatico from 1977. Excellent from you guys. greetings from Argentina.
SO GOOD...PONTY IS A BRILLIANT MUSICIAN WHO REALLY KNEW HOW TO CHOOSE GREAT SIDEMEN{DARYL STURMER ON GUITAR AND PATRICE RUSHEN ON KEYBOARDSARE FANTASTIC}.HIS WORK WITH FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRAIS BRILLIANT AS WELL.KEEP EM COMIN' MY ROCKY MOUNTAIN FRIENDS.....MUCH LOVE AND APPRECIATION ,KENT.
Jean-Luc Ponty is fantastic! I’m lucky enough to have a few of his albums on vinyl. I had this one (which is actually from 1976) but sold it a while back for whatever reason…I think I have to get another copy! Renaissance is also AMAZING! Would love to see them more on your channel. Try out “Ocean Gypsy” or “Ashes Are Burning”. Thanks as always for the great video! 🤘🤘
Old school Ponty is outrageous. BTW the pianist is a very young (and extremely talented) Patrice Rushen. She had just turned 21 when this was recorded. This entire song is just fantastic, IMO.
Got to experience JLP in 1978. First time hearing "Cosmic Messenger" was an eye-opening (and ear-opening) thing. I drove all my friends crazy with this violin guy... It was a long drive.
While I've heard the name since the 70's. I've never really sat down and listened to Jean-Luc Ponty. I am reminded of a couple others I have listened to, tho... Dixie Dregs (for the guitar/violin/keyboard combo) Ottmar Liebert (for the acoustic guitar) I would recommend checking out both of them in the future. Dixie Dregs is a wide mix of styles, while Ottmar Liebert seems to primarily focus on flamenco (with some others, too).
First heard "Enigmatic Ocean" in 1978 (courtesy of a fellow Airman). Blown away! Instant fan! Loved the guitar work of Allan Holdsworth and drumming of Steve Smith. Amazing!
This is the original version, it was the first Jean Luc-Ponty album I listened to in 1977. I became obsessed with his music and continue to listen all the time. The keyboardist Patrice Rushen was very gifted and she was only one of a few female players that got to play with jazz legends like JLP. p.s. love your t-shirt, am a big Rush fan too ❤️
This is piece is possibly my absolute favourite in all of modern music... The combination of the acoustic guitar, the understated percussion and of course Jean Luc... incroyable. From a masterly crafted album. Ponte is magnifique ! Came out as I went off to 1st year university.... Put the the speakers in the windows and blasted it across the campus from the 10th floor of Bethune College Dorm. Stopped people in their tracks... Thanks for the memory.... Give Marley belly rub and a treat for me.... My quote....( Stop with the negative vibes Moriarty!)
Jean-Luc has created some of the most sophisticated, hauntingly beautiful music I've ever heard. His music creates a mind-space unlike any other for me. I'd really appreciate if you'd do a marathon reaction to Mystical Adventures, at least side 1.
Another brick in the foundation of my musical appreciation. Lucky to see him perform many times starting when I was in highschool. Never knew Daryl Stuermer played guitar on this. This sounds like it's very inspired from his time in Mahavishnu Orchestra!
Ohhh, your cave. Needed help on this quote - it’s been so long. Forgot he found his power animal there. I’ve done those guided meditations. Love this actor. I should have known with you both referencing this before. 🤦♀️ haha. ✨🤪
Beautiful choice. So glad to hear you revisit this masterful artist. Gonna have to think about that movie quote ... step into the cave? Thanks so much for a fun year. ✨🤪
Really nice. Somehow, I've never heard this before. I've had "Enigmatic Ocean" and "Cosmic Messenger" forever. I also have the Rite of Strings thing that's mentioned in other comments. I even have the recent Anderson Ponty Band. But this might be something I need to pick up as well. Thanks for sharing.
I saw his band on this album tour and the year album tour for "Imaginary Voyage" with Allan Zavod replacing Patrice Rushen on Keys and Mark Craney replacing Norman Fearrington on drums.
Jean-Luc was also the violinist in the mark 2 version of Mahavishnu Orchestra, although I always preferred Jerry Goodman in that band who Jean -Luc replaced. I love his playing on the Zappa song Willie The Pimp from Hot Rats. Zappa is a huge rabbit hole to fall down but Hot Rats would be a great introduction. Nick would love it, liking fusion as he does, and there's some stellar guitar work from Frank. I'd also recommend anything from Franks mid 70's albums, Apostrophe, One Size Fits All, Overnite Sensation or Zoot Allures (especially Black Napkins from Zoot Allures). Probably my favourite song guitar wise is Watermelon In Easter Hay though (from Joe's Garage), just beautiful), it was played at a friends funeral a few years ago, I was in bits by the end. Loved this one by the way.
"Things I Don't Understand" would be a great choice from Renaissance but really anything from 73 to 78 would be welcome. As far as this song is concerned, it's a really great BMC choice. I enjoyed it greatly. I've been trying real hard to get a request in but being here in New Jersey the last few times it opened, it was at times I wasn't available. Oh well, one of these months I'll get one in. 🙄
Ive been a big Jean-Luc Ponty fan since my high school years ( I graduated in 1977 ) . I really like the band he had with Alan Holdsworth on guitar. I think you guys would really enjoy reacting to the band Dirty Loops, 3 amazing musicians who turn pop music on its head. I recommend "Work shit out" or "Next to You" to start off with.
This album had jazz pianist Patrice Rushen and guitarist Daryl Stuermer on it. The song before this, "Is Once Enough", is rockier and a good example of Stuermer's electric guitar playing. Stuermer later played on Phil Collins' albums, and joined Genesis. Ponty has a great solo on the Y.Tube video of Frank Zappa's "Dupree's Paradise" live in Stockholm 1973.
Renaissance is one of his iconic songs - From the Aurora album! I saw him during this period at The Golden Bear in Huntington Beach! Same lineup as on the Aurora album! Patrice Rushen would go solo and later have a hit with the song "Forget Me Not"! Tom Fowler would play with Zappa later (as Ponty himself had and would again as well as be in Mahavishnu Orchestra). And of course Daryl Stuermer would go one to play with Genesis and Phil Collins among others.
Check out Ponty's "King Kong: Jean-Luc Ponty Plays the Music of Frank Zappa" album! #nicknlexrequest "How Would You Like to Have a Head Like That" (Written by Ponty featuring Zappa on Guitar)
Excellent suggestion Rik- glad you commented so I didn’t have to look up all the specific info! Was just yesterday listening to an *EARLY* Mothers live (1968?) version of King Kong. Without stopping to look it up, I think a friend put a KickAss version of King Kong on a mixtape by Babe Ruth(?)
Never got to see Jean-Luc Picard, I mean Ponty, but I did see Yehudi Menuhin so I don't feel too bad. I did however have his music at my second apartment, along with a host of other great music. At that moment in time, we had this, Return to Forever, Renaissance, Shakti (John McLaughlin) and other progressive and Euro masters on heavy rotation. One song, "New Country" has been made into a funny video on these youtubes. David Grisman is also a lot of fun. Was the movie "Zardoz"?
@@NicknLex I actually played some Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff in a (bad) band when I was in high school, on electric violin. Pretty daunting when the sheet music just says "Violin improvises, E-flat Super Locrian mode"...
Not related to Jean-Luc, but I was listening to an album from some time back, Los Lonely Boys from San Angelo Texas. I'm sure you'd enjoy their 1st album.
VIOLINS ! WE NEED MORE VIOLINS IN ROCK OR JAZZFUSION OR ….. Everybody knows Kansas, the older ones will remember It’s a beautiful day (White bird), Southerners will remember Charlie Daniels Band (Orange Blossom Special) music experts will know East of Eden (Jig-a-jig), classic fans will know Nigel Kennedy (Jazz meets classic), if a violin bow is good enough, watch Jimmy Page’s Dazed and confused on The Song remains the same. If you want to see beautiful artists play violin music, the gents should check out Vanessa Mae, the ladies should have a look at David Garrett. And the ones who love romantic violin music, should check Ms Lucia Micarelli on stage with Chris Botti, I don’t know why, but watching the passion of her play, makes me want to cry a little. (see my other comment for link) Breeeaaathe …. Ok, back to Mr Ponty. The first song I ever heard of him, was at the rockdisco in my home area (called the Musical Box) when they played the live version of Mirage, maybe his most “commercial” but still a great song, never got it out of my mind ever since. And when my jazzfusion journey started at early 2000s, I bought 10 of his albums of the 70s and 80s plus another great live recording - Jean Luc Ponty live at Semperoper in Dresden/Germany - great concert, great sound. And I also have another version of the DVD, Nick mentioned, it’s called DiMeola, Ponty & Clarke live at Montreux 1994, also a great concert. My resume: Listen to more Jean Luc Ponty - a great artist.
Hi Guys, lovely reaction, JLP, what a virtuoso! And what about Patrice Rushen on piano and Daryl Stuermer on acoustic guitar, extraordinary! Both were very in demand session players at the time and with playing like that you can see why. Were you aware JLP teamed up with Jon Anderson of Yes to form the Anderson Ponty Band and they released a live album called "All in a matter of time" in 2015, both in their early 70's? Included on that album was a version of Renaissance with lyrics written and sung by Jon, the song was renamed "Renaissance of the sun" you should check it out and that album, it's excellent. Also, still in the jazz/fusion world, I think I recall you reacted to "5G" from Bill Bruford's album masterpiece "One of a kind" if you haven't already heard that album which of course features Alan Holdsworth I urge you to, it is phenomenal. "Hells Bells" opens the album in explosive fashion and features a fantastic Holdsworth solo, happy reacting, Cheers
This is really good: especially the violon, which reminds me of: #nicknlexrequest Vanessa Mae, Taccota and Fugue in D minor . That was the 1st time I heard time I heard and electric violin, back in 1996 on her album The Violin Player. 0-3 in movie quotes... 😡
Aurora is my fave JLP album......I still have my original pressing from 1976....my top pick from this superb album would be Lost Forest but every tune is top shelf. Also @NickmLex, have you checked out Jean Luc on Frank Zappas track ''Fifty Fifty' off the Overnight Sensation album....it's blistering!

That'll teach me not to post without double checking. Jean -Luc is on Hot Rats, but not Willie The Pimp, the violinist on that is Sugarcane Harris. God senility is a terrible thing😄Still a great track though with the added bonus of Captain Beefheart on vocals.
It's not bad, mixing up musicians ... it's more important to know them all and Hot Rats is my favourite Zappa album; I have 11 JLP albums, but still look for Sugar Cane Harris, not willing to pay 20 Euros+ for old music , when you get other stuff for 6 - 10, I'm patient and a record collection is never ready :-)
This is embarrassing. I deleted my previous post as my memory failed me . I will cut myself some slack though as 1976 was a long time ago. We saw Renaissance at Red Rocks in 1977. Not Jean Luc Ponte. Please accept my humble apology. 😳
@@NicknLex so the Red Rocks list does not list Renaissance as appearing in 77 (at least the one I saw) I did find a Renaissance DB that does show a RR concert first week of August 1977. That DB also shows the next 2 Renaissance dates in August after RR as having Ponty appearing with them as well. I also found a poster online that lists Renaissance with special guest Jean Luc Ponty.
The piano player is an accomplished musician in her own right. Patrice Rushen is a excellent vocalist well versed in R&B music having a slew of hit albums in the late 70's and 80's!!!!
For our Marley fans, his VERY FUN cameo starts is at 11:36 😂! Enjoy!

Marley is always a scene stealer! I guess that’s why W.C. Fields said he never wanted to work with children or animals. Lol. ✨🤪

And the ones who love romantic violin music, should check Ms Lucia Micarelli on stage with Chris Botti, I don’t know why, but watching the passion of her play, makes me want to cry a little. (see my other comment for link)
Breeeaaathe ….
Thanks for the heads up! Gonna use this hashtag to make it easier to find later on! #nicknlexrequest
@@NicknLex You're more than welcome, Cheers
I first heard of Jean when he was in the Mothers of Invention, Frank Zappa's group
❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
Jean Luc Ponty just posted this video on his facebook page. :)

@@NicknLex It's actually the second time he shares a video of you reacting to his music. Great work guys. Love ya.
@@nezperz that’s beyond awesome!!! Thank you for your love and support! Love back, Lex
This is really good: especially the violon, which reminds me of: #nicknlexrequest Vanessa Mae, Taccota and Fugue in D minor . That was the 1st time I heard time I heard and electric violin, back in 1996 on her album The Violin Player.
0-3 in movie quotes... 😡
I'll try to make them easier for you Frank! :P
@@NicknLex No no! I want to it on my own! Eventually it'll be a movie I've seen more than once 😉
and I actually have seen the movie many time (now that I scrolled down for the answer), but it still doesn't ring a bell!

@@NicknLex my pleasure you guys are my favorite reaction show.
Well this is quite lovely, isn't it? Big thumbs up for this. I don't know a whole lot of Jean-Luc Ponty other than some of his work with Frank Zappa.
Excellent, One of my fav JLP songs. Also Try a listen to “in spite of all” from Individual Choice album with Allan Holdsworth on guitar.
Not sure if you're familiar with this album or not. The band is Return to Forever, album is Romantic Warrior. Jazz/fusion at it's height. Cheers!
I subscribed because you played Jean-Luc

Beautiful Violin sounds.

I love face off !! But Alexia said cave 😅 it's another movie 🍿
Gorgeous piece. I'd like to share with Jean-Luc if that's cool.

@@NicknLex , Ok, I'll let you know what he comments.
Well, Jean-Luc gave it a Like although no comments...yet...
@@robertjewell9727 that is already amazing to know. Thank you. I hope he enjoyed the video
My Guess on the Movie Quote is
" Batman "
Imaginary Voyage (Pt. II)
Going on the playlist, but where 😗.
I wonder if you would react to jon luc pointy " puppet dance "
I think movie quote if I’m not mistaken is from Fight Club????
You got it!!!!

JLP!!!!
one of my favorite all time albums! rest of the album that this is from is even better than the hit!
Encino Man?

Oh man, that's equally awesome though!!
JLP is an example of good musicians beeing enemies to good music. Too much show-off, too little music.
The piano player is an accomplished musician in her own right. Patrice Rushen is a excellent vocalist well versed in R&B music having a slew of hit albums in the late 70's and 80's!!!!
