I appreciate how your channel isn't as overtly monetized as other channels. I understand that other creators need to make money, but the pure information on the videos makes it feel more like a passionate hobby and less commercial. Also, I don't really need to know about another mattress/vpn/meal kit :P
I love the new neckline on your sweater, it looks much better on you, and must feel more comfortable too. Thank you for clarifying the setup with monetised UA-cam channels too. Like you I pay not to see ads in the videos, so it was nice to hear that I was still supporting the channels I watch, not completely disappearing into UA-cam's coffers!
Thank you for not putting ads in the center of your videos. I AZ actually watch ads on both sides of your video as a way to say thanks for not ads in the center. I can't afford to donate, so watching ads are my way of saying thanks.
I love your channel. I’m one of the ones who watches every video you produce. I’ve been knitting for 18 years but I only started knitting complicated patterns and even ventured into sweaters within the last 3-4 years. Your teaching style works for me and the way my brain works so I’ve scoured your backlog of instructional videos over snd over and over to help me understand and get through the tricky bits that had me stumped on a project! These days my skill and confidence as a knitter is so much better that I don’t necessarily need the instructional videos As much anymore though I still enjoy watching them. Your casual chat videos are my favorite I knit while watching and it’s like having a friend to knit with. Thank you for all the time snd hard work you have put into this channel
Thanks for sharing your thought process about what and how many videos to produce. I’m so grateful for your no-ads-in-the-middle policy! I usually watch those ads, thinking the content producers need the money, but I’m always glad to not see them. And yes, I’m one of your every weekend watchers. Your content is just wonderful!🥰
I really appreciate your discussion at the end of this podcast. The political climate right now is so frustrating, and the “pandemic” handling, mishandling, restrictions and regulations are so overwhelming and frustrating. Your channel is a place where I can experience peace and sanity. Thanks so much for having such a positive attitude and for the help and encouragement you provide. BTW, I love what you’ve done with the sweater! It’s amazing how much difference 1/2” makes.
I just want to say thanks for posting these, it gets me through my Friday drive home. And big double thanks for breaking your videos into chapters, that is VERY helpful.
Hi Roxanne. Thanks for another great video. I appreciate your knowledge of knitting. Great job on the neckline redo. I became a subscriber after a Technique Tuesday but anticipate every Casual Friday episode. I recently moved to MN this summer and kept all of my yarn stash. I now know that it was worth the money because I will keep the leftover yarn from sweaters to do repairs. I’m glad we are in the sweater wearing season. Take care, Kathy
Hi Roxanne, thanks for your very informative, instructional content. I've been knitting for over 70 years but continue to learn and enjoy that. I really appreciate the communication modern technology allows. Love where your titbit segments send me. Judy, Nelson Bay, Australia (just north of Sydney)
It's amazing how good that new neckline is, it's so much better. I feel encouraged to spend the time to adjust things I don't like about my knits. Thanks for the explanation re the youtube thing and doing what you do. I learn a lot from both your videos.
Well, personally, I watch them all. Love Casual Friday. Never miss. The Tuesdays I watch and save the ones that I think I may need. Another of learning and enjoyment.
I'm with you on the wide necklines. I avoid patterns if it looks like the neck is too wide. And if the sleeves are too fitted. I realize I can work with a schematic and change the things I don't like in a pattern. Visually, I like the change to the neckline you made. Nicely done.
I enjoyed your explanation of the process you employed in updating the ‘sweater’. The changed neckline fits perfectly with the style of the garment and the colour is very flattering both to the garment and to you.
I can't remember exactly how I came across your channel, but I am so glad I did. You are exceptionally talented and I love your motivation for doing this channel. I can't always watch on a regular basis, but I do catch up. You're wealth of knowledge is truly astounding. Congratulations on 80K subscribers. I have no doubt you'll see 100K very soon.
I just love your Casual Fridays and have been watching for nearly a year. Your technique Tuesdays are also very well done, and has been something I seek out when I need help with something. I also like how you describe the benefits of using certain techniques vs others and the reasons why. You are brilliant with both of your style of vids! Do what you love, and what doesn't seem like work :)
Thanks for explaining how the financial support works for your channel. I’ve seen links to ko-fi on several channels and I assumed it was a way to buy the owner a literal cup of coffee. I found your channel searching for a technique video. I subscribed because of your Casual Friday videos.
I love all your videos since discovering them over 12 months ago to keep me motivated interested and most of all they give me impetus to try anything even if it's only once I've needed so many different patterns the different stitches different styles top down socks top up socks top down tops top up socks knitting machines just love it. I mostly watch the videos while ony bicycle trainer in the garage during winter especially. I know if I need to know or repeat a technique Tuesday video it is the first UA-cam video I watch, so thank you very much for all your hard work keep going and whatever format you feel comfortable with ❤️❤️
love the itextilis link- thanks. i am a knitting history nerd. i totally agree with wide necklines. i like necklines that keep me warm- especially from drafts. Milwaukee lady here-- so there is always a draft somewhere! thanks for your mix of fiber goodness.
I would like to let you know that I LOVE all your vids! I enjoy watching for tips, tricks, yarny things.... I browse older episodes for either current project info or "...huh - I forgot about this/that little trick/tip"... I appreciate your 'stamina' regarding seaming/making your Decade Sweaters. I would have found easier methods to seam (or make in one piece), or given up on (many, soooo many) patterns where instructions were wrong/not proofread, and so on. That's how I learned to re-write patterns (!) and learned to 'read' my knitting. All this Pre-UA-cam, Pre-Internet. Thank you for all that you do, your tips, research, project sharing, I truly enjoy - and still learn - from your vids. Definite watcher/follower! Whatever route you take, I will keep looking out for your tips!
I enjoy watching all your videos because I’m a curious person. I like learning from your technique videos because in addition to showing the technique, you explain what is happening with the stitches and why. I also love watching the casual Friday videos because you are a great speaker, you talk about many interesting things, and that motivates me to learn more and more. One thing I do when I am going to start a project, is a video playlist including all the techniques and tips that could be helpful for that project. I need to say that most of the videos I include in the playlists are yours.
The neckline of this sweater looks very good and seems warm. What a great fix! Thanks for the advice to keep the leftover yarn to fix things later if needed. I sure will do that from now on.
This is such a great video. Very interesting. I love your sweater. I like it better, with the deeper neckline, I also get cold quickly. Every thing we make is a OOAK, we should make it our own. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤️🧶
Hi as a watcher in the UK I really appreciate the lack of midstream ads, I have family who have a home in Florida and they say the US TV is almost unwatchable for the number of ads. I do watch casual Friday each week normally as you say at the weekend and then dip into technique tuesday as you would dip into a reference Library. I have just used a cast on technique that I learnt with great success, so thank you for the help, it is greatly appreciated.
Roxanne, thank you for your transparency. I subscribe, never miss Casual Friday although I may not see it for days after you post. Your technique vídeos I use as needed, always confident that you will have the level of detail I want. I love how your brain works! Much like mine but I didn’t get the math gene. Thank you for all you do to advance the craft.
I think I started to watch your Casual Fridays and learned you had Technique Tuesdays. You have inspired me to expand my knitting skills. I enjoy learning all you share in the tid bits. Thank you so much Roxanne! I feel your channel is invaluable for me as a novice knitter.
Thank you for your videos! I found you through the technique videos, subscribed for the casual Fridays, but I watch them all. I've only been knitting for a couple years so almost every technique is new to me, and I love how you explain various ways to achieve results and the pros and cons of each. I'm too curious of a person to just be told "well, do this." I like knowing why I'm doing things the way I'm doing them, and exploring various techniques.
I just used your crochet neckline fix on my first and only sweater. It helped a lot! It's a long cardigan, and the weight was stretching out the neck. THANKS!
Your sweater looks great with it's new neckline. I agree that if my neck is warm and then I am also warm so often wear cowls or scarves as well as my sweater. Either can be easily removed if the temperature warms up during the day. 🇬🇧
Great job on updating that neckline! And thank you for sharing your thought process and the ways to support you. It's good to know what is best for you :)
Love that red sweater. Thsnks for sharing what you did. But you have encourage me to fix a cardigan I made last year. The sleeves are to short and I do have the yarn to increase them by 1 1/2". Looking for info on how to increase the depth of a sleeve. Tight sleeves are popular but just not comfortable to me.
i also love natural wool that’s gray or brown ☺️. Suffolk is very pretty. I subscribe because knitting podcasts are so fun and relaxing to watch, but also have benefited a lot from a decade of technique tuesdays!
I’m a recent viewer who found you looking for toe up sock tutorials and new heel options. I watch all the new content you produce. I really like your no short row heel technique video and am hoping you do a toe up version. I appreciate your open discussion at the end of this video and YAY FOR NO ADS. I understand the need for others to include ads but so refreshing that you don’t. 💕💕
I'm so happy you are enjoying my sock videos. :-) There is no difference between how a short row heel is worked cuff down vs toe up (whether it uses real short rows, or decreases and PU sts (as in the mock short row heel), because it's symmetrical.
It is amazing how little changes to necklines can change the whole look of a sweater. I had one that was knit exactly according to the pattern, but it was too long. It folded over under my chin. I loved the sweater, and decided a little surgery was in order. I pulled out an inch or so, and the sweater slide down on my shoulders, and fit as it was supposed to. Easy fix, for a lovely sweater.
I love your Casual Fridays and look up techniques when I need them. It’s wonderful to find such a talented and knowledgeable continental knitter! Thanks to you, I am knitting the 1989 cap - part of my family lives in St Paul, and they are thrilled! I was a little disappointed that it only comes in one size tho - could you do a Technique Tuesday (TT) on how to make a size bigger or smaller? I also tried the grafting but somehow had to do it with the yarn on the left. I managed, but it would be great for another TT on the grafting. This hat is a great present, and since the pattern is free, you could do a little series on it. I’m also wondering about your yarn choice - what do you think about superwash worsted, for instance. Just some thoughts! I’ve knit two so far and am on my third!
Thanks, Roxanne. I am a faithful watcher/subscriber. I really dislike the ads so a thing I've begun doing is to let he ad play but turn the sound down. It's a win for both of us. BTW I so want the pattern/ directions for your sweater. I realize it was long ago and as you explained, a sort of knit along but I can still wish for it. I love tightly gauged cabled pullovers.
Congratulations on 80,000 subscribers! I think you’ll get to 100,000 faster than you think…there’s that momentum thing. Also, your sweater fits you so much better now! Back when I was a child, my mom was always focused on how my clothes fit. So I notice that sort of thing. Your sweater looks so much better now! I think it even hangs off your shoulders better!
Thanks for sharing with us all the process to make your neck fit better, it was very informative. I'm dying to know if we'll have in the future the same class of aran knitting, but with you. Kind of what you did with august sock, I would love to learn with you all those things you said you have learned in 2005, particularly I'm very curious about the construction, how to start with the shoulders. I did the August sock and never learned so much before, I hope we get in the future this aran sweater class too. Best regards from Brazil!
I pay for premium and loyally watch your Casual Friday. I hope they share with you. Unfortunately I also listen to a lot of other gardening channels. I listen while I do other things, another reason I love Casual Friday... it's a great listening source that's educational.
Great sweater makeover! Love the new neckline. Would love you to explain how you decided which thread to snip when you undid the sewing though. I'm always terrified of snipping a stitch by mistake. Also, thank you for such and interesting and informative explanation of how revenue from youtube works.
I didn't actually snip anything in order to rip back the neck. I found the tail I had woven in and pulled it out, and then unsewed the tail from each stitch until I could rip back to the 2nd row of the original ribbing. I recaptured all the sts, then tinked back a round to make sure all the sts were seated properly on the needles. Once I had everything on the needles correctly, I cut the original yarn so that I had a 4'' tail. I then spit spliced the new yarn to the tail and reknit the ribbing.
Hi Roxanne. I love the way the neck turned out! I thought it looked great before but it is even better now! Your work is amazing! May I ask what type of yarn you used? It is so pretty! Your decision regarding your channel sounds like a good plan. I look forward to whatever you post for us! I’m also really enjoying your breed study as well. Many thanks!🤗🤗
It's regular old Peruvian Highland Wool (worsted weight) from Elann. They stopped selling it years ago (and retired earlier this year, so the company doesn't even exist anymore)
Thanks for your prompt response. It is really pretty. Nice rich color. I’m sure there are comparable yarns out there. I was just curious. Thanks again!
I also follow Food Wishes (Chef John) and one thing he's done recently is these compilation videos like all the pizza recipes he's done released as one long video of all of them back to back, or 5 great soup recipes, and it's videos he's made before re-released in a compilation. For your Technique Tuesday ones, I'd think that would be very nice for viewers - like all of your cast-ons, or different heels for socks or different bind-offs.
This was a project unlike any I had ever knit. It was basically an online course. I guarantee you that I have no other project notes like this one. I set up the notebook when I started the project, because the PDFs were released over a period of 7 months, and they included calculations that needed to be referred to later. Once in the notebook, they stayed in the notebook! :-)
Your alterations to the neckline made what was a beautiful sweater an outstanding sweater. The color is spectacular. Do you know if the designer still offers the pattern? I'd love to make one for myself.
@@RoxanneRichardson Thank you. I see I did not open the show notes before asking. I appreciate your clear explanations and interesting projects. Thanks Roxanne!
Very interesting to learn how you get income from You Tube. I do watch your Casual Fridays and often your Technique Tuesdays if Im interested in the topic. I have a colorwork sweater with a wide neck, for I too wanted to finish it quickly. I might just do what you have done. I hope I still have some yarn to do it with.
I love your videos. I really appreciate that you are so open about your thought processes. It is understandable that you want to get to 100k subscribers. I want you to get there too! I recommend your channel to fellow knitters regularly, purely because of the high quality content. I hope that you get more subscribers over the winter here. Also, I click the like button because I hear it helps the algorithm. Maybe prompt us to do that every once in a while? Sometimes I forget. :) You show me that there will always be things to learn in knitting so I am confident that I won’t get bored because I feel like I’ve figured everything out. Oh, I also bought the geometric blanket book. I’m right at the age where all of my friends are starting to have kids and I’d be bored out of my tree knitting a straight one - four line repeat blanket.
🤞 I hope you reach 100,000 subscribers this year!! I haven’t checked yet, but if you haven’t already, a video about undoing and reknitting things like cuffs or the bottom ribbing of a sweater would be awesome. I’m always petrified (maybe a slight exaggeration but not too far from the truth!) of losing stitches. People speak so casually about ‘just’ undoing things and reknitting, but I remember that just undoing a castoff one time was very difficult and nerve-wracking…
I love this sweater and I think the new neck is much better than the old one! I've heard before how youtube revenue works but I'm still surprised to see how little a view is worth. I subscribe to YT Premium because I hate ads, I used to have an adblocker but it didn't seem fair to creators. Unfortunately I don't have as much expendable income as I'd like to support every channel I subscribe to.
Ad rates vary by time of year. The number of dollars made per 1000 views is more in mid-December, when advertisers are pushing ads. More ads played, means more ads viewed, and more revenue generated. January is the worst month for revenue, in terms of the number of dollars per 1000 views, but for a knitting channel, it's the month with the highest number of views, so the revenue doesn't tank, it's just depressing that for my channel, there is a correlation between lowest ad rate and highest views. Rates rise after January, slowly, while views fall through July. Once August hits, views and ad rates both start climbing, again. Time and channel growth brings higher revenue. When I started in Feb 2017, I made $1.57 per 1000 views. My current ad rate is more than triple that, plus my views are 9 or 10x higher each month.
hello, I have an additional question about ads. To date, my attitude has been 'this creator has given me thier time, I shall give them some of mine and leaave the ads running so they get money' over hitting the skip ads button. Do you know if you get less revenue when a person skips ads or how ad percetage revenue is calculated? As my channel is aimed at children no ads are allowed.
Good question. I also didn't realise that skipping them would affect payment and had assumed that not using an add blocker was enough to garner revenue.
Interesting. I went over to Fiber Love Diary to see what her Suffolk sample was like, and she was surprised at the gray color, and said the wool didn't behave the way other Suffolk she'd spun did. Apparently there's a "grey Suffolk" wool that is from sheep who are *from* Suffolk, but are not the actual breed Suffolk. Kind of like Falkland wool, I guess, which just refers to sheep from the Falkland islands, not a specific breed. In the case of the grey Suffolk, though, it's a bit misleading!
@@RoxanneRichardson I agree-misleading, and also think you're right about it being like the Falkland in that respect. I'm looking forward to seeing how her milled Suffolk behaves.
The southern hemisphere is going on daylight saving time around the same time the northern hemisphere goes back to standard time. It's summer in the southern hemisphere, so they are transitioning *to* daylight saving time while we in the northern hemisphere are transitioning (on different dates) to standard time.
Hi Roxanne. Regarding ads, I’m ok with ads but some of the ads are ridiculously long. I encountered one that was 42 minutes long. I get several a week that are over 20 minutes. And what’s even worse they are longer than the video I was watching. I try to watch the ads so I can support the content creators but those are too long and I just can’t do it.
Yeah, that's unreasonable! I would say that if you want to support a creator, putting up with a single ad that is less than a minute long is enough. Anything longer than 30 seconds should be skippable.
I appreciate how your channel isn't as overtly monetized as other channels. I understand that other creators need to make money, but the pure information on the videos makes it feel more like a passionate hobby and less commercial.
I’m new and love your Friday’s!!!
There should be a link to the FLAK tutorial in the show notes. Janet Szabo sells the tutorial on her website.
Thanks Roxanne. I should have looked there first.
I'm not seeing the chapters in the progress bar, I think for them to show the first timestamp has to be 00:00, hope this helps!
Thanks for letting me know. I left off the Introduction chapter!
There is a link to the Aran tutorial in the show notes, if you're interested.
@@RoxanneRichardson Thank you!
I pay for premium and loyally watch your Casual Friday. I hope they share with you. Unfortunately I also listen to a lot of other gardening channels. I listen while I do other things, another reason I love Casual Friday... it's a great listening source that's educational.
Red looks great on you and the whole sweater is just right now. Good move to tweak it.
Excellent as always, thank you once again for the Friday uplift!
@@RoxanneRichardson Ah. Thank you. That makes perfect sense.
Love your sweater update, it looks great! I watch all your videos!
I love how I learn so much each podcast. Thank you.
You located your project notes from years ago.... Oh dear, I can't find the notes for a project I did last week. I need to up my game.
😂 I thought the same thing!
@@SueB8746 There should be a link in the show notes.
You show me that there will always be things to learn in knitting so I am confident that I won’t get bored because I feel like I’ve figured everything out.
Oh, I also bought the geometric blanket book. I’m right at the age where all of my friends are starting to have kids and I’d be bored out of my tree knitting a straight one - four line repeat blanket.
You will want to put down a cloth for the Swaledale because it is even more kemp-y than the Southdown. I'm talking loads of it!
Hey Roxanne - you’ll make a fortune when you publish your Decades of Sweaters book! 😉
Roxanne, is the pattern for the sweater you are wearing still available? Do you have the name of the pattern/designer for the sweater?
Should be in the show notes.
My current ad rate is more than triple that, plus my views are 9 or 10x higher each month.
hello,
I have an additional question about ads.
The advertiser only pays for ads that are viewed.
Good question. I also didn't realise that skipping them would affect payment and had assumed that not using an add blocker was enough to garner revenue.
If you have a particularly long Casual Friday, I don't think *I* would mind if you used one or two ads to divide the video into two or three "acts"
That whole grey Suffolk thing is still odd and throws me off. My sis in law's don't have kemp and none are grey. The new collar looks great.
I don’t know how I got your channel in my recommended but you seem cool so I’m leaving a comment for

Summer is daylight savings time, winter is 'plain' time.
