You're not alone. I've been hearing that sound for 50 years. It bothers me at times but I've gotten used to it.I don't have a choice for it never stops.
Thank you for posting this!!! We've been hearing this droning sound for the last 3 days and we thought it was some kind of construction far away but were losing our minds because the noise never stopped. Then one of my neighbors said cicadas and I didn't believe them until I saw your video LOL. I've never heard them sound like this until this year!
Reverse time I ever heard cicadas was in Amarillo Texas. I went outside and screamed SHUT UP! Oddly enough, they did stop it didn't last, and then work the second time around my wife told me she experienced the same thing, before we met
I got kind of lost once on a mountain bike trail in north Georgia one time and it was really eerie. The droning of the cicadas would rise and fall and it felt like it was some sort of alien sound. I came across quite a few dead ones on the trail, too.
A bit of trivia. Cicadas, more commonly called locusts here in Australia, lay dormant in the ground for about 17 years waiting to hatch. This was a very loud lesson I learned a couple of years ago when they all emerged from their slumber. My friend’s house was surrounded by trees & the noise of the cicadas just singing to the world was deafening. We couldn’t sit on her verandah to talk because we couldn’t hear over the noise. I’m not kidding. As kids we’d catch them & if you found a Black Prince you ruled. To this day I still enjoy seeing the Black Princes although I suspect kids these days have no Interest in playing with something outside in the sun.
@@Tralfaz190 thank you for taking the time to reply. I didn’t realise how wrong I was. But the one thing we both agree on - cacophony of sound. Rather wonderful isn’t it? Add Magpies to my life & I’m a very happy older Australian.
Actually the first couple of days I wondered who was running some high pitched machine on the other side of the adjacent wooded lot. :^) They are crawling over my car port, too. [Randolph Co. NC]
Few years back we were camping in pa, my son was sleeping in a hammock. Woke up covered in them as they came out in droves overnight… he was a little freaked out!
Just spent an entire summer in my Australian bush cabin with this noise but louder. And it was rhythmic like nature was breathing in and out. Almost sent me crazy but know it’s pretty awesome experience.
Our local 911 line got numerous calls recently about a "strange intermittent buzzing coming from the ground". ONE person reported this on our Ring doorbell cam community and panic ensued. It was, of course, cicadas.
Funny, watching this for a brief time drowned out the sound of the cicadas outside my window. But the video ended, I'm hearing the cicadas outside my window again.
When I hear them I recall the scene in Signs where the alien walks by the birthday party. Imagine you have been hearing that sound all day, it is starting to darken a little, the dog starts going nuts. You open the door and the dog just about takes your feet from underneath you to come in. You walk out on your porch. As you glance toward the woods you see something moving. A scary, ominous figure and then another and another. They haven't noticed you...Yet. You issue an order to get of of your property. They turn abruptly with a snarl. Suddenly the sound gets louder and three of them are moving toward you at a cheetah's pace. You spend the rest of the night barricaded in your home as they watch you through the windows, scratch and hit to get in. all while that noise is occurring. Anyway. Have fun with that.
I live in Southeast Missouri and I kept wondering what this sound was bc it doesn’t sound like the normal sounds I would hear from cicadas but I guess it’s bc there never were this many at one time. I’ve been seeing them all over my yard and front porch.
I don’t understand how so many people have no idea what they’re hearing. As children my younger brother and I would pull the “shells” the cicadas leave behind off of the trees and whoever ended up with the most “shells” won. They’ve been a constant summer creature my whole life. We had dogs that would mess with them until the damn things started “squawking” which scared the hell out of the dogs. Cats that would attack them regardless of their caterwauling. But, then there are people who when they hear them they start calling 911 and whatnot… Are cicadas actually something people are unaware of?
These guys must be totally different than the gulf coast cicadas. The southern variety that screams every year is in full force right now till at least early October. Nice scenery!!!
I can’t believe that sound is EXACTLY like my tinnitus! It is actually some comfort to know that others share this experience.
A few folks have said that...crazy

I hope someone makes a long 1 hour tape of the noise for us tinnitus sufferers.
Sounds like mine too!!!! 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Exactly what I was gonna say,
Mine has been nonstop 24/7/365 since 1984.
I've always said I have cicadas in my head.
Between that and tinnitus, I have a standing wave pattern stuck in my head
It's almost identical to my tinnitus.
LOL
My tinnitus, is higher pitched. But I do get the similarity, and how people would find it to be the same.
@@Tralfaz190 It's nothing like my tinnitus. But we're all different!
I call it the cicada symphony! 😃
Yes. We have ‘em here, too.

Same lovely sound here in Warren County Missouri. Helps me sleep. I love it.
It will pass too quickly, enjoy it while it's here, it's special.
I will miss it!

They're not dormant,😢 they are larvae, they live off the roots of the trees until they pupae and then become adults, and begin their cacophony

The hills are alive with the sound of music! ❤

Just be glad it's not locusts. Less 'rocky' then.
