Operation Leviathan

  • I was lucky enough to have been invited on a fishing patrol “operation Leviathan” with the Police and EA. I went along as a BAA & Angling Trust member. It was a great day and fantastic to see so many anglers happy to see us out checking licenses and listening to what they had to say. Over two separate days and patrols, 46 checks in all with 6 rod offences in total. This video was really about showing that the Police & EA are out and do do checks. It’s just not as easy as you might think to organise multiple organisations coming together at the same time.

    As a club bailiff myself you do encounter all kinds of people and situations. Thankfully most are very pleasant, but you are always aware things can go wrong. In my opinion the right attitude on the approach plays a huge part in the outcome. Thankfully I can count on 1 hand the times things got "uncomfortable", on the flipside I have lost count of the useful tips and hints gained from fellow anglers whilst on patrol. Fair play to you (and anybody else who does) for giving your time to protect this great experience we call fishing.

    Good to see Steve. I suppose this was a natural progression for you in your angling "career".Thanks for sharing. I can't imagine fishing being a relaxing experience without a rod license and the prospect of prosecution, but some do it. Keep up the good work 🙂

      Thank you very much 👍 some just don’t care but then that behaviour is usually an indication of how those individuals are generally. Probably drive their cars with no tax and insurance kind of people

      Cheers Dave, there’s a lot of anglers out there that love to moan at others about how bad it can be. But! are not prepared to do anything themselves to help or jointly help. If we all did just a bit the UK angling scene could be such a better sport and have longevity 👍

      @@BlackCountryPiker well Steve, Rach and I are down on the BAA stretches from Friday for a week and we really appreciate seeing a bailiff or EA Officer. Although we live over 100 miles away, we have had a BAA ticket now for about 9 years and it's still the best value that money can buy. Keep up the great work Steve and maybe bump into you on the bank. 👌

    Hi Steve, that scene where people had used the river as a dumping ground was shocking, in all my years fishing I've never seen that, I've seen so called anglers leaving rubbish in their peg but nothing like that.

      Hi Jim, if it’s the scene with the mattress it looks like fly tipping at its finest! The local council and EA have been informed so we will have to wait and see what happens

    Wish these sort of patrols were made along the rivers and canals in the big city. I come across many foreigners that i can tell probably have no license and/or permit to fish but they are still doing it. A lot of these folks are also taking their catch home for the pot as if they would do back in their own country.
    surprisingly, I come across many new people who have just entered the sport either as a bit of fun due to living close to a river/canal with kit they bought from Argos or Aldi doing a special on a spinning rod, reel and lures combo kits. Many of these new people dont know that they require license, permits and memberships at some locations to fish. Some people have stopped for a chat with me about wanting to get into the sport and if they needed any permits or pay any fees to fish so its good that there are some folks that will always err on the side of caution rather than wading full on into it.
    -- On a side note, I really dislike how some clubs can have fishing rights to really long stretches of water. I understand that it makes life easier for the C&RT to look after and manage and always places for club members to fish, but it annoys me to no end that even with a waterway wanderers permit, Im locked out of a lot of stretches that arent fished most of the time unless i am a paid member. Some clubs dont even do day tickets and that just aggravates me even more.
    For sake of argument the C&RT arent completely innocent either. In some stretches its a bloody boat convention and there is no way of fishing that stretch of water unless you squeeze in between the boats that are moored. Doesnt matter what day of the year it is - boats moored there permanently.

    Isn’t this rod licence lark just a stealth tax?

    • @BlackCountryPiker
      @BlackCountryPiker  2 роки тому

      Not really, it would be like comparing car tax in the same way. In both cases the money gets reinvested in to the same field. For fishing it’s fishery and fish management and all the waterways work that goes on plus much more. The same in that car tax goes towards the upkeep and improvement of the roads and motorways 👍

      @@Bo88y22 I am not in a position to argue with something I don’t know for myself. I can only go by what the guv.co.uk pages tell me, angling trust and CRT. At the same time, if we said get rid of licences that can easily lead to a multitude of issues against the fishing industry

    • @Bo88y22
      @Bo88y22 2 роки тому +1

      @@BlackCountryPiker No,no,no. Car tax is sent to the treasury and used just like vat and income tax in general spending.
      When you pay for membership for club waters most of the upkeep is done by the clubs.
      Waters in England and Wales that are used by boaters, canoeists, paddle boarders are also paying for the upkeep.

    • @Bo88y22
      @Bo88y22 2 роки тому +1

      Sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you, but I do think rod licences are a stealth tax. Everyone gets to enjoy rivers and canals so costs should be borne by the government using everyone’s taxes. Most of the hard graft is done by volunteers,like yourself and angling clubs.
