55 gallon barrel with aquarium heater or bird bath heater . Connected to a rain catch and faucet hose . Also an air bubbler. With a aquarium pump to also circulate it around . Works in hot weather or cold.
Good morning. I'm a first-time watcher to your channel. I like your personality and your can-do attitude. I've had chickens 2 years but this is the first year the water froze due to the Arctic blast which hit the southern part of the US. I think the cheapest and easiest way to heat the water is to put it in a bucket, sit the bucket on top of bricks and Lee heating pad under the bucket over the bricks. Connect to a solar generator. You may need to recharge the solar generator inside if not enough sun light. I bought my solar generator for just over $200 but that's my emergency generator when the power goes out. If you already have a solar generator then all you need is a $12 heating pad and big bucket.
I used a floating heater for my koi fish in a pond that would work pretty good.it just gave me an idea put the floater in a rain catchment barrel to feed into the 5 gallon water.
Wow! We have lots of chickens and every winter every other day I'm having to water our chickens with the electric waterer's you flip over and I hate them. I'm so going to try this. Because for some reason the chickens seem to drink more in the winter. Thanks for the info
Pretty cool. When I get out of this place and get my chicks. I'm definitely going to have make one🙂 great video. It felt good to let go of all the goings on in ones life for just a few minutes. God bless you guys.
Another option is use a bird bath heater on a large rubber water basen for livestock, drill a 3/8" hole 3 to 4 inches down from the top of a 5 gal bucket with a lid, flip it over in basen on top of heater. I used 2 gal bucket with a can of sand and light bulb under the regular 1 gal waterer.
@@JaredGant this year I just bought a heated.bucket off Amazon. I think it was $30. Last year I used some fiberglass insulation leftover from the attic and duct tape. 😂
Outdoor rated and 12ga wire size. Anything smaller in wire size like 14 or 16 or will be to small and trip breakers. I run about 200ft of 12ga on a 15amp breaker and that takes care of two 150watt heat lamps and one heated 1gal water bowel 👍👍
I looked up the "Perfect Bucket Heater" and they, too, don't say how hot it gets. It says it uses "only" 80 watts, which could mean the water, especially as it goes down to 2 or 3 gallons, could get really really hot coffee hot. Doesn't it?
How cold does it get where you're at? I'm up in Canada where it gets down to -60C with windshield, would something like this keep it from freezing in that cold of weather to?
Iam from Canada As well with -40 to -50 I been checking for heat water for chickens seems all I seen was for like -0 and hoter guess northern canadian need to make a video
The width of your outstretched arms is roughly equal to your height. So, the cord is probably between 5’6” and 5’10”, unless you are 5’ tall. Nice bucket!
Has anyone tried this with water cups in a bucket instead of nipples? I'm concerned about them freezing on the outside of the bucket, but would love to adapt what I already have instead of making something new. Zone 4a, we see weeks of below freezing temps
I would honestly say it wouldn't work. The water is so little in the cups that it would get cold quickly no matter how warm the bucket was. It's easy to replace those cups with nipples. Sane size screw on area. I would just order them and save the hassle. Hope this helps. 🙂💧🐓🦃💧🐥🦆💧
I'm on here searching idea for this very reason. There was an ice crust in the tank but the nipples were frozen solid this morning. I thought about pouring warm water over them but that didn't seem wise. Figured it would increase the chances of breakage and also leave the chickens walking in freezing water.
Hi Mike ! - That snowstorm looks promising ! Does that mean a new Kubota snow video coming this week ? I hope so ! 😁 P.S. - what are those little slits on the bottom of that heater ? I'v never seen something like this. I thought those were air vents, and that the thing would sit under the bucket, so I guess they are not air vents, and that thing is water-tight.
@@SunnySlopeHomestead Oh boy..... that's a bit scary to hear. I know "The Mindful Homestead" UA-cam channel had some issues with those thing leaking, and a lot of it. I can't remember what happened ( if he fixed it )
@@SunnySlopeHomestead haha, glad I got you laughing, yeah I saw those little slits and thought, wait ! don't do it LOL. What the heck are those little slits or slots on the bottom ? I wonder why they are even there..... anyway really looking forward to the video on the quick disconnect. Yikes.
Bucket heater link 👍👍👍
K&H Pet Products Perfect Bucket... www.amazon.com/dp/B01HT9DAHY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I have the same system, but I use a fish tank heater that I bought on Amazon for less than 10 dollars and it works perfectly in the cold Utah winters.
Great tip!
Protip: buy a 100W preset aquarium heater they are like $10-$15 and work great for this application.
until the water exposes it and it cracks
@@barrynewton6148 thats the purpose of installing the nipples 2" off the bottom of the bucket
@@barrynewton6148there are small plastic ones for 5 gallons that don’t explode

I wonder if using snow would work too
I like the idea of a 55 gallon barrel. However, would an aquarium heater be enough to keep it from freezing? Do you have experience doing this?

That’s some quick thinking you did there good job 👍
Fantastic!
So practical & helpful.
I may look into a 7 gallon bucket.
Thank you
Mine eat snow.... My grandparents always just used plain snow. They had no electricity. Simple... And they are very happy chickens 👍
👏👍 5 is better than 3...
Beautiful beautiful snow😄
Have a good evening ❄❄❄
Thank you

They do seemed to hug the water down in the winter lol hope it works for you
It's great to learn new ways to do things. A time saver for sure.
I use a simple crock pot on low in the winter. I take a little to them in the morning and night. Simple and easy
Great tip!
Wouldn't the edge of the porcelain insert burn them??

I had to sub because you’ve got a great sense of humor!
Oh thank the chicken gods, I hate those open bottom waterers. Thanks for this. :)
Thanks! I have a 3 gallon bucket for my chickens but I have it sitting outside of their run that way they can't gunk it up
Wrap the bucket in a plant mat
I use the mats to ferment kembucha.
But the fish heater does sound 🤔
Good..
Great tip thanks
Do the nipplers freeze up in this system?
The warmth keeps Everything ice free but they do drip and make a ice puddle
Love the chickens cleaning off your boots!!!
The best! HAAHAHA
👍 another great episode 🤗🙏
Thank you
Update? Does it work well? Hold water well? Not drip? Not freeze?
Great concept. Thanks for the video content
My pleasure!
Bucket heater ? Where did you find? Great idea !! I would use the cups you find on Amazon. It’s good! 🎉🎉
Amazon is where I got the bucket heater I believe 👍👍
The cups are great for summer but not that great when freezing. If my chickens would use the nipple....?
You have the best idea so farm ...and I watched maybe 15 videos about this to save my chickens in winter in zone 5.
Look at Mr. Go Go Gadget do his thing

Great ideal I'm going to try this
I have some reversions I need to do
Totally gonna make one of these!

You tap on them and they will see the water , rest will take care of it’s self. Good luck 👍👍👍👍
what extension cord do you recommend, I have to run a 100' extension cord to my coop for one of these.
