A good start is..have a plan, and start planting trees! Ag land can become forest again. I bought 5 acres of old pasture, I've planted nearly 1000 trees. Native wildlife is coming back, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, all coming back.
As a previous customer, I had Jeff come out 3yrs ago and I followed his plan and the last 2 years I've had the best hunting which gets better each year. You pay for the plan and I followed it fully.
This is the closest I've seen a video match what we've done the last 2 years. We even had the farmer spray over on our switch on one end of our line in the sand. We're having a farm meeting on last Saturday of march and i will be showing pics and video of the sprayer company that crossed the line with overspray. I'll be assurring our cash renter that i have a sprayer also and i strongly am an eye for an eye kind of guy if he lets this happen again. Same guy also ruined my neices garden on another property with his wind drift. Other than that, it was a complete success with switch grass border 20' wide with 6 pockets that were buckwheat then winter rye. Lots of daytime use by deer, turkeys, pheasant and quail. Thanks for your emotional support! Lol
Lol...I can relate Tim!! We have great neighbors but there is always a balance, for sure! Good luck with your meeting 😊 I love seeing how fast the changes can take place too!
This is a great topic Jeff!! I’ve been slowly taken out ag away!! I was really surprised how fast the ESG took off!!! Thanks for the help!! Hope all is well!!
I love this topic...always so hard with clients tho! Always have to find balance 😊 Your land has exploded...so cool to see! Heading out to chainsaw and mow in a bit 😊
The lease on my 20 acre field is finally over after this season. I’ll be doing exactly this once it’s done. I can’t wait. Would love to have you guys come out to design is but I figure I’ll save that $$ and put it into seed and planting
This video is exactly up my alley at the moment. Being surrounded by AG with only small plots of bush scattered around im busting hump to try and get as much cover built up on my property. Im not so much worried about lots of food but a small 1/4 acre plot will do me more then enough, combined with water hole on adjacent side of property. Im more worried about places they can bed down and feel "safe" in cover. Lots of Red osier dogwoods, switchgrass and conifers for me this year.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 The plan is to cage a bunch that i want as "priority" bunches and then go slightly overboard with other bunches that Im not so worried about if they either come or go. I figure its filling in the AG field if they survive and if not its starting to let the few deer I do have around know there is food and also newer habitat popping up they can use.
I’m m starting with 6 acres this year and then moving to the rest of my 65 acres of ag ground. I’ve been waiting for a video like this but I do struggle visualizing some of what you’re talking about. Any chance of a whiteboard demo to go along with this?
Hey Jeff how wet is too wet to start spraying Simazine? I’ve been trying to get it down on my field edge where I plan to plant switchgrass but NWPA has been pretty wet the last couple of weeks. We’re getting a cold snap this week so hopefully I can get it down by the end of the month but things are greening up. Should I put it down truly before spring green up in the wet or try waiting to dry up a bit but may have some green up? Thanks for the great videos!
We have a 250 acre dairy farm in southern VT that is about 50/50 agg fields mixed with pasture, hardwood forests, and apple trees. Being that we have a working farm we always have Summer Deer food. I definitely have a lot more does than bucks on our land. How can I make things work in my favor?
I know you say to not put water holes in food plot’s but I have seen people like Chris bee put them in food plot’s would it be okay to put one on the edge of a food plot or in the middle of it
Sometimes on a very small hunting plot it's ok if you don't have a better spot for it. Been installing waterholes for over 20 years and worked with clients to install over 10,000 of them in dozens of states. Always remember that water is a low risk spot for a mature buck to hit and he will do so any time of the day. On the other hand, a food source...even the best case small hunting plot is hit sparingly during daylight hours by mature bucks. Also, when deer eat green food plots they don't need to take a drink of water. When you add water to a food plot you take a low risk, high attraction spot to hunt (the water) and lower its value to that of the food plot. You turn an all day spot into an afternoon spot. You take a great morning spot and turn it into an afternoon spot (water). I'm not saying "never", but it is very rare. We have 14 waterholes in 2 states and I do this for a living helping 100+ clients per year on average choose their waterhole locations...or if they should have any at all. We have zero on a food plot...and we have 16 food plots totaling over 20 acres in 2 states. I probably recommend 1 on a food plot every 50 or so waterholes ..
On year 3 of this process. Pretty cool to see the changes as layers are added. The switchgrass field edges are an awesome starting point. Ever put a deer swamp in a wet spot of an ag field? Contemplating putting in Eastern gamagrass or cattails along with willows, dogwoods, and cottonwoods.
Take land out of AG and develop for a few deer and small game. That would degrade the area to it's lowest point in history except ice age. Land does not thrive without large rumanates won't have buffalo so needs a managed cow herd. Pheasants need AG for the grain unlike turkey so they would go away. Always just the deer and rabbits never yet have I seen a video on the complete system the way nature developed the land to work
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 a place managed by someone that cares about every aspect of land care can make you look stupid. Hi Mike, that sounds great! No worries either...this stuff is expensive! Enjoy the process 😊👍

That sounds really good! Make sure that you cage those ROD or I bet they won't make it 😊 Switch will be your friend, that's for sure!

Hi Shawn I would spray it right now! It will world its way into the soil with the rain 👍 Not a bad thing at all...
If I send you a layout of my new hunting spot would you tell me where you recommend to put stand locations
Unfortunately I do not perform online consultations...I only work by the day. I wish I had the time!

can you use a slit seeder to plant switchgrass in existing switchgrass that is spoty or will it damage the existing switchgrass roots?

I like the idea of the swamp...more diversity and edge. Great for LOTS of critters!
2nd!
Im getting closer...
Almost, Tim 👍😊

Nailed it Kurt! Man it's windy today...no spraying Simazine or seeding switch today 🤦🏻♂️
