    Thank you so much for making this video, this was actually very healing for me. I’m a Hispanic person myself, my dad is from Colombia & my mom is from Puerto Rico but I was born in the United States & my parents didn’t teach me a lot of Spanish when I was younger because they were afraid that I would develop an accent in English and that kids would bully me for it. Instead, my cousins would bully me when I was younger because when I would try to speak Spanish I couldn’t speak well and that shame stayed with me for years into adulthood. Recently I’ve been trying to learn Spanish again & I’ve struggled with the RR and this made me feel a lot better. So thank you Karencita, you are a wonderful person ❤️

    I can roll r’s but only slowly. I can say words like carro and perro. But I can’t do the exaggerated pronunciation at the beginning of names like Rrrrrrrrrrrodriguez………and I’ve been practicing for years so I will never be able to make that pronunciation.

    Hola Ruby. Congratulations. Now we know why some people can't role their Rs. Who knew (besides your dentist)? The RR is easier to pronounce (for me anyway). I have to think about the R to be sure I'm rolling it. If I weren't so lazy I'd practice more and then I could stop thinking about it. The people who criticized your Spanish should get a life. It's like criticizing someone's accent. If they are understood that is all that matters, and accents are often charming. Like yours, which is barely noticeable. You've worked really hard on your English and the improvement during the past few years is very noticeable. If your inability to roll your Rs encouraged you to focus more on English then it was worth the frustration. After the operation you now have two languages. As for the people who criticized your Spanish, I wonder how good their English is?

      Hi William! How are you? It's been very cold in Mexico these few past weeks. I didn't do much. We spend a lovely time with my family and I realized I could solve my this pronunciation thing.
      I agree with you. I wanted to make this video because I can also see how much I did because after receiving criticism.
      I wasn't expecting to solve my problem anymore as I was feeling very with the way I spoke.
      But once my dentist told me I could solve that problem, I didn't doubt and I did it.
      If it doesn't work, it's fine too.
      We've just arrived in Colombia by the way.

      @@LaKarencitaMX Mexico is poorer for your departure. I hope you have a great time in Colombia. Will you spend most of your time around Manizales? A few days ago I heard a story about Manizales. Thanks to you I recognized the name. It was about bullfighting in Colombia and that Manizales was conservative in some ways and either had or was about to hold some bullfights. Have you ever been to see one? I don't enjoy seeing the bulls tortured but without bullfighting there is no reason for that breed of bull to exist. Maybe a few will be kept in zoos. As hard as it is for English speakers to roll their Rs, when I was traveling in Mexico the hardest sound for Spanish speakers to say was a short i. It always came out as ee. So ill, pill, or my name, Bill, came out as eel, peel, or Beel. We had lots of laughs as my Mexican acquaintances struggled to say my name correctly. At least I don't have to make the "click" sound used in South Africa. The tl sound at the end of Nahuatl words is difficult enough.

    I can say the single R pretty good all the time, pero doble RR es muy difficult in the conversation.... if I only say one word at a time and repeat it I can make the sound, for example if I practice the word "perro" I can do it.

  • @marydean1440

    It is amazing that you did not receive a diagnosis until now. In English we call people with the short frenulum as “tongue tied” because it does affect speech. Usually is is diagnosed in infancy because often it causes feeding problems and babies will lose weight as they struggle to suck from a bottle or during breastfeeding. So glad you had the surgery. 💕

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  Рік тому

      Oh really? I didn't know this. My mom says I never had a problem like that. It was evident I was tongue tied and I was diagnosed with this problem when I was a child. It wasn't a health problem though so I guess my mom didn't have the budget for the surgery at that time.

    I have Filipino friends and the way they pronounce the "r" when they try to speak Spanish is very noticeable, it is very strong. I have even observed that they do not make a difference between the r and the double r, and the sound is the same sound to my ears.

    • @LaKarencitaMX
      @LaKarencitaMX  Рік тому +1

      Now that you say that, I've heard the same in Filipino people. I can understand why.

    • @DesdeLaZona507
      @DesdeLaZona507 Рік тому

      @@LaKarencitaMX I don't know if it happens with all the languages of the Philippine archipelago, but when my Tagalog-speaking Filipino friends try to pronounce words in Spanish where the "r" has a strong sound (double r) they pronounce them with a stronger sound than we use Spanish speakers and also have a hard time pronouncing the "ere" sound in Spanish. However, I do not observe that they do the same when we speak in English, in words where the "r" has a sound, either strong or weak, and I understand that during the domination of the USA they were formally educated in the pronunciation of all the letters of the alphabet in English, which I deduce did not occur during Spanish rule, in the case of the correct pronunciation of "ere" and "erre" in Spanish.
      By the way, in the original Tagalog there was no Latin script. In 1940 an alphabet that included 20 letters was invented, which was replaced in 1976 with an expanded alphabet that contained 11 additional letters from the then Spanish alphabet (C, CH, F, J, LL, Ñ, Q, RR, V , X and Z), which in turn were replaced by the current alphabet of 28 letters (excluding CH and LL and RR, which were now considered digraphs). In this video, at minute 2:53, I hear that in the Filipino alphabet the "r" sound is unique and somewhat stronger than in Spanish: ua-cam.com/video/Fk-Hdpg5Nc0/v-deo.html

    Hi Karen. I have been considering the same surgery(sublingual frenectomy) for almost a whole year. I am pretty good at pronunciation for all of the other Spanish letters, and have tried for countless hours to make the "rr" sound. I think my tongue is in the right place to make the "rr" sound, but I still can't make it. I heard about the surgery, but I just haven't had enough money to do it. And YES! I also have spent years looking for synonyms to avoid speaking the "rr" sound. Afterward, I really hope to be able to roll my "rr". It's my dream to be able to do that. What dentist did you use, just out of curiosity?
