- The Black King was a 1932 race film chronicling the rise and fall of a fictionalized charismatic leader of a back-to-Africa movement, modeled on the life of Marcus Garvey.
The Black King chronicled the rise and fall of a fictionalized charismatic leader of a back-to-Africa movement, modeled on the life of Marcus Garvey. The film explores numerous critiques of Garvey's movement, including the lack of knowledge about Africa, the presumptuousness in making plans for future development and government in Africa without consultation of people already there, and conflicts between lighter skinned and darker skinned African Americans. While Garvey was a primarily a political leader with religious opinions, his counterpart in the film was primarily a preacher and religious leader.
The Black King was written as a stage play by Donald Heywood and plans were publicly announced to produce it on Broadway directed by Russian choreographer Léonide Massine. This never took place. Instead, Heywood's story was adapted by Morris M. Levinson and it was produced as a film by Southland Pictures under white director Bud Pollard in 1932. Leab, a 1975 commentator, rates it well as entertainment, saying it has "a more carefully plotted storyline than most other black genre films of its time". The film was re-released in the 1940s under the title, Harlem Big Shot. - wikipedia

On the one hand, I am glad that this was posted. I have been looking for this for 30 years. I first saw it on WHUT Howard University tv. It is a historic piece of watching a Black film from the 30s. But on the other hand, it is an awful display of trying to insult the legacy of Marcus Garvey.
Your last two sentences say it perfectly!!!
Thanks again my man Mike D. I can't wait until you do another YT Livestream. For a question and answer session on topics. We need it now. Both yourself and our good brethren Mr. Woods.
Thanks for posting this as a look into history... 😎

When Black Women were beautiful...No weaves....
Yea just wigs 🤫

PERM
I’m beautifull and I’ve never worn a weave or wig. I’m assuming you clearly didn’t mean all “black” women.
“Hollywood Shuffle” Robert Townsend is the first thing that came to mind when watching this. SMH I can tell the whole cast want to black acting school.
I could tell from the first instance of dialogue that this film was written and created by whites.
Good viewpoint NEVER TRUST PEOPLE WHO DON'T TREAT YOU RIGHT THEN WHY SHOULD THEY TEACH YOU RIGHT.......WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE
Not really. Donald Hayward who wrote the dialogue was a black man.
@Mrs Neanderthug that's interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Essentially, after Garvey's arrest and deportation in 1927, he was dismissed as a con man by many Black Americans at the time. Many black newspapers at that time viewed him with contempt, so it would not have been surprising for a Black person to write such a lampoon. It was the Black Nationalist community that continued to hold Garvey in high regard, and it was not until their heyday in the 1960s that Garvey become a widely respected and beloved figure among the mass of Black people again. He was far ahead of his time.
@@Themaddprof Hayward may have had some part in the writing of the screenplay, or he might have simply been given writing credit because some of the dialogue from his play was included in the film, but it was Morris M. Levinon and Bud Pollard who created this mess and to me that fact is obvious.
My Mother used to get puking sick about this sort of behavior and she taught me these were NOT real BLACK PEOPLE .......She always said to look in the Bible to read and find our people.
They could not get any country in Africa to take us.
Arrow pointed to Mississippi at the end they went home.
This home for us.
Am I tripping, or is the main character a white man in black face? Smh I noticed the shit immediately
❤️❤️❤️❤️ love it.
Nobody noticed the 1492 on the arrow pointing to Mississippi? 😂😂😂 they were more woke in 1932 than we are today and we have the internet 😂😂😂😂
Would luv to see this film undamaged. Very interesting, good acting, well financed. Lead character brings to mind, Eddie Murphy/Rudy Ray Moore. (Stock footage of Black parade is from where??)
The black parade scenes were from actual newsreels of Marcus Garvey marches in Harlem.

You need to add the term DISRESPECTFUL SATIRE to the title so folks know the true intentions of the film

Lorenzo Tucker was my grand moms dream boat movie star . Even when she was 80 and you tube first came out she swooned when we watched him on old race films . I mean she literally swooned .
Most people dont understand what they just watched. It is because of Garvey that we have so many Pan-Africans Indians today. And because of that indoctrination, what this movie was trying to tell you went directly over your heads. 😪
THIS WAS DONE IN 1932, BUT HAS TH E BLUEPRINT OF THE 2OTH CENTURY!
Scientific19 1932 was in the 20th century. 1900-1999 was the 20th century. I think you mean the 21st century, which we’ve been in since the year 2000.
@@MrMark19148 by what cultures definition of measurement of time are you basing your information upon?
21st century and beyond if left too WHITES.....peace
Dude looks like R.Kelly in the thumb nail
You can tell white people wrote and directed this based on how incomprehensible the dialog is, most black people were extremely eloquent and well read back then.
I know damn well, they did not speak that way off camera
White people really think we are dumb.such wasted energy.
one word ....WOW!
NO ENLIGHTENMENT AND FOR OUR TRUE EMENIES VERY SAD.....WHITES MUST FACE THE TRUTH OR PERISH. ..THEY KNOW THIS TRUST AND BELIEVE
Marcus Garvey was an eloquent intelligent man . What in the Jim Crow is this???
The time this flim was made tells me our race the Black people wanted to identify with who they are but the film is confusing In the light that it was told the story I did not want to believe because my mother was born in the 30's and is a starch Christian and if I were to ask her about this I truly believe she would have know knowledge of this let me say this you have been bamboozled , run a muck, flemflamed, and I tell ran the game on so this is what the 1930's was like?
‼️💯
NO BROTHER OUR ANCESTORS WERE BEFORE THE INVASIONS FROM ASIANS AND EUROPEANS INDO-EUROPEAN. .....peace

The movie poster for this movie says "A riot of fun " THE BLACK KING...Question...is this a light skinned African American in blackface??? What's up with the bucking eyes and poking lips??Brauh, dark skinned African Americans had it bad.....the laughing stock of America yesterday and today....Also, the more that I watch this movie, the more this guy looks like Clifton Powell
I wonder their hasn’t been a recent film made about Garvey.
Can’t fit all he did in a film.
@@everythingizyou there are documentaries here and there such as "Look for Me in the Worldwind" that was on PBS.
The American Storyteller yeah I’m hip. His life is better as a documentary.
@@Themaddprof Which was condemned by both of Garvey's sons and the UNIA the organization of which Garvey was first President-General and still exists today.
@@NnamdiAzikiwe_keyamsha true on both counts.
...this movie was made in New Jersey...is it all indoor shots..?...I think they are actually using the news feel footage of garvey's actual marches...

I was reading some of the commit I feel a black movies if a white man wrote it he have to get it from a black man the movie very created
in that context it probably is racial
Wow! a Typical case of‘ meritorious manumission.
Typical!!! It’s a comedy but there is a lot of seriousness in it. Don’t forget that he isn’t Marcus, jut a clown of him. Let’s recap. Man grows a church and another man comes and takes over when it is established. This new man is worshipped and people give all their money to him and get titles to be above other! In the end those same people push out for another like they did before. Please get the message 😂. And learn the real story of the “Black star liner”
