So understandable. I don't generally like "horror" either, but King creates a world that is a nightmare that you kind of want to live in, just to prove that you would survive whatever ordeal is thrown at you.
I OVE "The Stand"..I have it on Audible and listen to it almost every night. It kinda manipulates my dreams a bit..Its a fantastic story and my all time favorite book. Ive read it many many times, I hear something different every time! Thank you Mr King!
It’s such a joy whenever Stephen gets into Lord of the Rings with one of his guests. Even though he knows almost all there is to know about LOTR, he’s endlessly interested and willing to learn from others’ experiences and opinions of LOTR.
That ruined the whole interview. LOTR is the crappiest and most overrated book ever. Don't care about this Colbert moron but it's baffling to hear Stephen King saying it taught him to write.

Wonderful writer. His books are to be cherished and always beg to be re-read as you always get something new from each revisit into his world.Peace, Mr King
King revised that book at least twice. I started reading a version on the same date as was on the first page of that edition. I never felt so ill in my whole life. Later on, I re-read The Stand that was the original King wrote which had an additional 400+ pages. Still didn't feel any better🤢🤢
One reason Tolkien and King are so similar to me, is that they are both masters at character creation, and development They build on all the characters, and they become real. Love how both authors can bring in a character for a moment, build them realistically in a few sentences, and even though they exit the story quickly, they are so rich and lasting👍👍
04:53 on is exactly what I feel about horror. I’ve been a lifelong horror fan and honestly, horror fiction and horror films have gotten me some of the absolutely hardest experiences of my life. Heartbreaks and losses and depressions, horror has never failed to make me feel a little better, a light more understood, a little lighter if only briefly.
King isn’t just the master of horror. He has gifted us so many non-horror stories as well. The man who can scare the piss out of you can also make you cry. Love him.
For decades, I fantasized about being a "The Stand" survivor. People dying, money meaning nothing, going on a journey and having an impulse to break into homes to loot for supplies. When it's real, it's not so fun...
I was always partial to Faramir. I liked him more than Aragorn, because Aragorn seemed to have no choice in his destiny, whereas Faramir could have chosen to be like brother Boromir but was always better even against the wishes of father Denethor. I also liked Eowyn. If I had to pick a hobbit, I would choose Meriadoc. Eowyn and Meriadoc sacrificing themselves to protect Theoden from the king of the Nazgul had me in tears when I first read LotR: TRotK. (I understand the appeal of Samwise over Frodo, because it is a similar contrast between them as Faramir to Aragorn, where Frodo is bound by destiny and can do no other than he does, and Sam chooses to stay with Frodo after the fellowship of the ring dissolves and he has to carry Frodo, often literally, especially after the fight with Shelob in Cirith Ungol until Smeagol/Gollum meets his Mount Doom.)
Frodo could have chosen not to go. Granted Gandalf kinda pushed him to it but he was not without option. On at least two occations, at Bilbos house and in Rivendell, he could've said no. But he chose to as all the others.
@@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494 I did have to look up the steward of Gondor, Denethor, because I could not recall his name and it would have been weird to call him by his title. Also, since Merry is spelled with an 'r' couplet, I made certain Meriadoc had just the one.
@@johan.ohgren I suppose Frodo had some choice. On another note, I do not know whether Tolkien had it in mind for the writer of the second half of the "Red Book" to downplay his role and exalt his friend. In such a case, in his humility, Frodo may not have given himself as much credit as he deserved and made Samwise appear all the better.

"The Stand" is one of the best from this master storyteller......"The Drawing of the Three" and "Different Seasons" are also masterpieces.....music is my favorite form of art; storytelling is a very close second.....
I like The Stand but prefer The Eyes of the Dragon. But then I generally prefer fantasy over mainstream fiction. I'm not sure whether they have the same villain.
I LOVE *both* the Stephens! Colbert brings me much joy in these troubled times....and King is such a erudite, funny and humane guy. I could listen to them both for hours and hours and hours..... Thankyou Stephens! 🥰
My family been reading Stephen King since the 70s. I knew who he was long before I was 10. I can't remember my exact age but at some point before I turned 8, My sis who was 7 yrs older than me had offered to read me a bedtime story from one of King's short stories... the Boogeyman. For a few years, my mom had to check the closet and make sure the door was closed before I could fall asleep.
What i really like about this interview is that they started to actually talk about books and it seemed like a real conversation. You could never have this type of conversation with a live audience on a show

Stephen King’s “The Stand,” is the only fiction novel of anyone’s that I have read up to five times over the decades! It is a very real depiction of a dystopian, post pandemic world. Truly a mesmerizing read I was loathe to put down.
Colbert is positively giddy by the end of this clip and I love to see it. You can tell he really loved to hear King's perspective on LOTR. And of course it's Samwise Gamgee.

So understandable. I don't generally like "horror" either, but King creates a world that is a nightmare that you kind of want to live in, just to prove that you would survive whatever ordeal is thrown at you.
Read the Shining decades ago...... scared me so much I can’t read anymore of his books! 😢😅😱
He writes nightmares that lead to a hard won redemption. He is a genius.
I love Stephen King books but i hate them ! Lol. Can’t put it down but so creepy!
January Baby lol I remember how Stephen discovered how to pronounce “Tolkien” correctly just last year :D
🤦🏽♂️
That ruined the whole interview. LOTR is the crappiest and most overrated book ever. Don't care about this Colbert moron but it's baffling to hear Stephen King saying it taught him to write.
I love the fact that King does *not* have a wall of books as his background. They're obviously all in his head.
Imagination is a terrible thing. I imagine germs as big as wagon wheels climbing my arms..
Well, I wasn't thinking about that BEFORE. Geez, thanks for that little horror nugget. I gotta go wash my hands now.
Right?!? im different now having heard that. Good lord..
+Marla's Crafty ~ "I gotta go wash my hands now." His job here is done, now. :-D
@Marla's Crafty
You made me visualize this and now it's real...
Washing my hands 10 min apart isn't gonna be enough anymore...
Thank you Marla...😔
Keep safe ☺️😷👍🏼
Truth lol
Hate to a Debbie Downer, but, if you could actually see ALL the little micro germs/
bugs, we would all go insane, there crawling on us right now and most places you look!
“There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.” - Great book!
No, it's overrated crap.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, for that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

lol. I forgot about that.
Great reference!

Wonderful writer. His books are to be cherished and always beg to be re-read as you always get something new from each revisit into his world.Peace, Mr King
The Stand was the most terrifying book I've ever read; only read it once, but haunts me always.
King revised that book at least twice. I started reading a version on the same date as was on the first page of that edition. I never felt so ill in my whole life.
Later on, I re-read The Stand that was the original King wrote which had an additional 400+ pages. Still didn't feel any better🤢🤢
Just read it again. I think I’ve read it over a dozen times. - possibly more
#TheStand is BY FAR my fav. I have 2 copies of the book, plus an unedited version! Love that book!
The Stand is the best book ever and we are living it exactly!
One reason Tolkien and King are so similar to me, is that they are both masters at character creation, and development
They build on all the characters, and they become real.
Love how both authors can bring in a character for a moment, build them realistically in a few sentences, and even though they exit the story quickly, they are so rich and lasting👍👍
reading salem's lot right now and boy, i wish stephen king could build some of these characters in just a few sentences, christ almighty.
The way Mr King tells a story, pulls you right into the plot and you feel everything🙌❤️
Always love when Stephen King is interviewed by Stephen Colbert. Very interesting and fun.
Stephen talking to Stephen about Stephen's book, and Stephen's favourite book.
"On Stephen's show"
Inflation?
Needs a dash of Stephen, Simmered in Stephen for about an hour and serve with a side of Stephen.
🤗😂🤗
"It will be years until I read anything this good again" felt that way when I finished my 15th or 20th King novel :D
Once you read Stephen King's books you will not read much of anything else. 😂
Stephen Colbert using his talk show to amass his army of Stephens.
Stephen Nation Army
Mugwump A Stephen nation army couldn’t hold me back....
I’ve started reading a bunch of Stephen king over quarantine, he seems so cool and chill to talk to!
Nice!
Re-reading the dark tower books again. A gift that keeps giving.
Long days and pleasant nights sai
I've made the journey many times as well and I couldn't agree with you more...Long Days and Pleasant Nights Gunslinger
I love the Dark Tower!
Amazing series. I was incredibly sad when I got to the final pages of the last book when I realized the journey was coming to an end.
Ka is a wheel.
I love Steven King. Such a talented guy and interesting.
That's the first thing I thought of kinda scary
King isn’t just the master of horror. He has gifted us so many non-horror stories as well. The man who can scare the piss out of you can also make you cry. Love him.
Stephen King is a national treasure. Stay safe, both Stephens! :D
No doubt 🤴🤴🤴👍👍👍🧡🧡🧡
Stephen is the most famous person to come from Maine. So proud of all he has accomplished and the scenes he has filmed in our beautiful state.
Hands down, two of the best Stephens ever!
👏👏👏
Ooh, good call!
What about Stephen Hawking?
Stephen King? I’m going to hit the like button before the ads are done.
For decades, I fantasized about being a "The Stand" survivor. People dying, money meaning nothing, going on a journey and having an impulse to break into homes to loot for supplies. When it's real, it's not so fun...
So you already found houses to loot ? I thought we would all wait a few months before starting to do that !
Money matters dude, other ways Donald wouldn't advertised cloroquinine
I understand you, feel the same
@@romangysse3690 Nah. She just planning ahead. We must prepare!🤣🤣🤣
You’re goddamn right
I just read the shining during this quarantine. Seemed fitting. Loved it.
I love when King does that snarky smile, lol you two Stephens rock!
Totally understated writer. Supreme intelligence and compassion!
Your spelling is on point, man. I mean, you REALLY know your Tolkien.
Frodo could have chosen not to go. Granted Gandalf kinda pushed him to it but he was not without option. On at least two occations, at Bilbos house and in Rivendell, he could've said no. But he chose to as all the others.
Bryan Alexander I’m all about Legalos. He was magical, had a sixth sense about him, and fought without fear.
@@dontbefatuousjeffrey2494
I did have to look up the steward of Gondor, Denethor, because I could not recall his name and it would have been weird to call him by his title. Also, since Merry is spelled with an 'r' couplet, I made certain Meriadoc had just the one.
@@johan.ohgren
I suppose Frodo had some choice. On another note, I do not know whether Tolkien had it in mind for the writer of the second half of the "Red Book" to downplay his role and exalt his friend. In such a case, in his humility, Frodo may not have given himself as much credit as he deserved and made Samwise appear all the better.
Me: What the hell is that thing behind Stephen King?
Also Me: Don't ask. It's Stephen King's house. Just... don't go there. Don't wake up the demons. Just let it be. Forget about it.

Very well done.
My favourite book up to this day. First "over 1000 pages" book I ever read (I remember the book store employee telling me about the pages, as if he wanted the kid in front of him to understand, what a big number 1000 was :D)
Re-read it countless times.
By now it's probably also like " "The turtle couldn't help us.” "
OMG! 😂
You can see Colbert’s eyes twinkle when King starts talking about LOTR. Its like discovering that somone has the same favorite song as you do.
My wife edits horror stories. She's never been busier.
Bill Kerr *Hey can we be friends? And can I be friends with your wife? And can we become close enough as a group that we do cute little things like send jokes over text, or send each other unpublished horror manuscripts that the other would definitely enjoy? Or is that...weird?*
Bill Kerr I want to be an editor of books! How do I start? Can you ask her and let me know please
Does she work for the Washington Post lol?
What a cool job
What a cool job! I wonder if they ever get to her???
The Stand is my favorite books! I've read it many times and the mini series was awesome. Thank you for the many hours spent in another reality. LOVE YOU STEPHEN.
This interview got so pure. Would love to have a beer with these two
Who wouldn't! 🤗🤗👍👍🤴🤴
Me too, and I don't even like beer!
Man, these 9 minutes flew so fast that i wish we had an 1hour interview... 2 of the best Setephens of the World... ^_^ s2
"The Stand" is one of the best from this master storyteller......"The Drawing of the Three" and "Different Seasons" are also masterpieces.....music is my favorite form of art; storytelling is a very close second.....
I love The Stand. Prophetic as hell.
Different Seasons was my first Stephen king and will always be my favorite!
I like The Stand but prefer The Eyes of the Dragon. But then I generally prefer fantasy over mainstream fiction.
I'm not sure whether they have the same villain.
Drawing of the three is my favorite book of the series!!
You could never have this type of conversation with a live audience on a show
John Coffey. That's who I'd want to be stuck in quarantine with.
Sweet call!
Least: Big Jim Rennie ( Under the Dome)
Most: the guys from Dreamcatcher
He could suck out your Covid19 and spew it into Trump!
Andy Dufresne for the win.

2 of my favorite men right here. A writer and a comedian. I would enjoy being quarantined with either one equally.
If I have a choice of who to be quarantined with in the Stephen Colbert world... definitely John. Musical, soulful and chill.
Yea, me Black widow
Ahh, Stephen King - the person who has kept me from getting a good night's sleep since my youth! And afraid of clowns, politicians with too much charm & too few brains, pet cemeteries.... this list goes on. Oh hell! Now I can't sleep! Thanks to the two wise Stephens!!!!
This is one of the most engaging digi-interviews I’ve seen so far! Hugs to both Stephen(s)!🤗♥️🙏🏼🙌🏼💯
Fellow Mainer here, thank you for loving this man as much as I do. He made me love to read.
Germs as big as wagon wheels. Everything Steven says is poetic
Stephen King’s “The Stand,” is the only fiction novel of anyone’s that I have read up to five times over the decades! It is a very real depiction of a dystopian, post pandemic world. Truly a mesmerizing read I was loathe to put down.
Find you someone who looks at you the way Colbert looks at King when he's talking about Lord of The Rings.
Colbert is positively giddy by the end of this clip and I love to see it. You can tell he really loved to hear King's perspective on LOTR. And of course it's Samwise Gamgee.
Wow that was such fun. A hero interviewed by a favourite.
Love your books Stephen King, been reading them since I was 12, now 57, just ordered your new one. I have all the books orriginals in hard cover. Never stop writing,
When I read Stephen King novels in school, it would be in the middle of the day with the lights on, doors open, windows open. Even then ... still so very _scary_
In Salem's Lot he actually put a jump scare into the book
😂😂You are too funny!!
Colbert's face, when he is saying goodbye to King, looks completely filled with love shared between friends. Thanks to both Stephens for the lovely literary moment.
I have this *great* idea for a book: Annie Wilkes and Jack Torrance are quarantined together in Salem's Lot, and then there's a knock on the door - when they open it, they see their old friend, Captain Tripps! Hilarity ensues!!
They’re quarantined inside The Mist’s grocery store with nothing on the shelves but corn. Oh, the horror!
Thank you, gentlemen. Love sent to both of you and yours, especially during this united front to combat Covid-19.
This man is so smart and amazing.
I LOVED "If it Bleeds" just ate it alive. I wish it I could read it again. I love Stephen king books too much and the happy/sadness is that I read them too quickly and wait for them too long.
Little did Steven King know The Stand would end up being historical instead of fiction. Beware the walking dude!

The two king books I read just before lockdown:
The Shining - A horror about people going mad from being stuck in one place.
The Stand - A horror about a lethal pandemic.
