Played this for the first time with a friend a couple weeks ago using 1 core, used the Irish ex-con and mage lady decks they recommended, and had AN AMAZING TIME. Our wives and kids were away so we played the whole core set scenario in one sitting, finishing the last two on literal hail mary plays that paid off and ended up "winning". We were so floored and adrenaline was pumping and was up all night and couldn't sleep LOL! So now we need to figure out what to play next!
Imo the Dunwich expansion box is your next purchase. If it's just the 2 of you then you can think about a second core later. I've all the current content (minus a few of the books as they're impossible to get) and only use 1 core (though my mate has his own collection too). Tbh, you can't go wrong with buying the content in the order they released.
Thanks for the breakdown! As someone who has just started looking at this game, it was immensely helpful. How often do you switch your character/deck? Do you pick one, play through a whole cycle, then pick a new one for the next cycle? Or do you pick one character and play through ALL the cycles with that deck? Seems weird to give players five new investigators every cycle if you're not starting over each time. Also, if you're starting over each cycle, how can the cycles increase in difficulty each time if you're starting with beginner cards every time? To be perfectly clear, every time we start a cycle, we start from scratch (no XP from the last cycle, rebuild decks, etc). But sometimes we will play the same team through a few different cycles! Sometimes one player will switch and the other two will remain the same. Sometimes we will keep the same investigators but build them differently. It is super fun to try wild combinations too, like a team that ONLY evades monsters and tries to never attack them. Or a brute force team that can kill everything but is awful at investigating. And sometimes (do not tell Matt Newman!) we switch investigators halfway through because a new one comes out and we cannot resist playing it immediately!

Especially around this time of year when the leaves start changing and a cool eldritch wind blows through our old New England farm town, I get HOOKED and drawn back in. To anyone thinking about getting into this game, I say this: Don't get overwhelmed! There's a lot of product out there, but it's worth diving in. Great production value as always on these videos.
Honestly what I wish you guys would do is have an option to include the new cycle doom tokens with the deluxe box subscription. Saves on shipping and lets you use the themed tokens right from the beginning. Other than that, keep up the awesome work everyone!
I find the cards are extremely difficult to identify for deck building. Player cards are all different design and takes a good length of time to get them sorted. Don’t understand why they made is this way.
I have finished the Dunwich cycle....but their printing of these older sets I need seems sporadic...so it’s hard/expensive to get old sets. I’ve almost considered just at least getting each of the deluxe expansions and then filling in the old Mythos packs as they come available. Good idea or would you suggest just trucking along and waiting around for Path to Carcosa to come back in stock.

Only for the new releases! Any of the previous releases are unfortunately super hard to find. The best way to make sure you get them is to subscribe so that you do not have to try to track them down after the fact!
I have to tell all people questioning to buy this game. I have to say this game is amazing. Bu amazing I'm saying that if you want a truely a adventure experience with lower end setup. One thing I wish more then anything and would give my money for in a second is a Cyberpunk style of this type of game.

You'll see that everything is arranged in order. First Cycle, Second Cycle, etc. That's the chronological order for every release, which is important. We suggest buying one cycle at a time, starting with the bigger box (which is listed first) and then each Mythos Pack in order. They have to be played in order, so start from the leftmost product and pick them up in the order displayed. All classes just *really* want 2x so many of the Core Set cards for their build. On a budget, we'd go with more story (a new Deluxe Expansion) over another Core Set, though.
Great question! In our experience, there are three options. A: Keep your Investigator and XP. B: Brand new investigator with no XP. C: Swap Investigators and keep the XP. Do what you will enjoy playing. If you are not liking your investigator and don't want to play the core again, just swap them out!

I say this because I was looking to get into Dunwich and it was very confusing, none of my local digital stores mentioned how many Mythos packs there were or in what order they would be played. Maybe the Mythos packs could be clearly labeled 1 to 6 or something.
It is purely a consistency decision because of the deckbuilding rule that allows you to bring two copies of a card in your deck. Plus it also gives you enough cards to create about 5 decent decks, so you have multiple decks to try and share with friends.

We like to keep attacking / evading to keep the bad guys from piling up, but it can really depend on many things, including what is in your hand. 3. They can, but it is usually not wise to. Players can always just gain two cards or two money or a mix. You never have to move and take big actions.

@@teamcovenant I get the impression that you can't use just the core set and mythos packs (let's say from the Dunwich cycle), because you won't have all the cards needed to assemble your encounter decks. I guess you can improvise but it's not the same as to play it the correct way.
Is it worth spending a lot of money for tcg´s Im considering to complete a tcg set and it will cost around 400 to 500 $ I dont know it is sooo expensive. I have the money but dont know if it is worth it. Fuck my Life hahaha
This game suffers from the same problem as lord of the rings. Each pack only has a few player cards for customizing your deck, and is mostly just scenario cards. After a cycle or 2 you end up with more scenarios than you'll ever have time to play through (unless you do nothing but play games 24/7). I wish that they'd put out a pack or 2 of only new player cards, without any scenario stuff.
Played a couple of games, enjoyed them but new to this whole thing. I like what I've seen but deckbuilding is still kind of a mystery to me. Could you do a video on that, what to put in (and what not to) and just how the whole deckbuilding thing works? I've looked on some of the forums but lots of time it's posts by people who understand deckbuilding from other ganes whereas for me the whole idea is brand new (and somewhat confusing).
This is a great suggestion, and something we have done in the past. One foolproof method for deckbuilding is to put a deck together, lose badly, and then ask "what cards would have helped me not fail"? Do that a few times and you will get the hang of it!
One core set is good for one or two players. If you want to go to three our four players (the max), we recommend two cores. All of the expansions are self contained, you should only ever need one!
2 boxes is fine for 3 but a bit limiting for 4. I've played 4 player with 2 starter boxes and 1 dunwich, and we didn't have much deck building options. This makes your decks weaker, increasing the difficulty. If you plan on 4 players, you may want a 3rd box...or get another expansion (probably the better option)
Howdy, am new to Arkham Horror the card game. Found this video very informative and am looking forward to purchasing and playing. On that note, however, I still have a question or two. Should i get a Core Set (or two), thereafter an Expansion, then the Mythos packs (etc), Do I mix them all into one "set" or keep them in separate cycles? If an playing a cycle, can I mix and match the entire expansion with mythos packs? Are they played separately? Could you please provide some guidance on this. Perhaps you already have a video about this. :) Thank you.
Watching this as I have a few spare minutes. Not really target audience as I have bought into it completely. The one point i would make, showing Return to the night of the Zealot with The Dunwich legacy cycle is a bit iffy as it updates the core set. The DL cycle update box has recently been announced. Tend to watch all the videos even if they don't seem relevant to me just in case they turn out to be.
Looks like a great game but unfortunately it also looks like a huge money drain. With 3 expansion boxes and having to buy six card packs for each expansion plus separate scenario cards you are easily talking way over 200 dollars every six months. I dont know the prices, but going on past experience i think it's a pretty safe bet that at the local hobby store each expansion box may cost somewhere close to $50.While each pack of cards close to $25 to $35. =( The thing about cthulhu card games is that they're always so darn good.... i am a veteran of both the original chaosium mythos card game and also the follow up call of cthulhu collectible card game by ffg and still have my cards in sleeves all neatly organized in a plastic card box all these years later!! Does Team Covenant make play surfaces/mats for the Arkham Horror LCG? That would be a cool thing to have.
One thing about Arkham we really enjoy, is that a new player does not have to frontload every pack. It is %100 ok to play as fast or slow as a person wants, and grab a new box or pack whenever they are ready. If the Lord of the Rings LCG is any guide, we do not see these packs being unavailable for a long time!
Team Covenant A friend bought me a core set for it, and I have no idea what to get or how to play, particularly now 3 years after it started. It'd be helpful!
Every Expansion is the start of a cycle. If you buy the Expansion, you can play the first three scenarios of that cycle, which is a fantastic experience all its own. If you want to continue playing that cycle, you can buy the Mythos Packs for that cycle to keep it going with new scenarios!
I adore your tokens, all of them... except the resource tokens. There is something so satisfying about stacking those little crates... I'd buy them up if you guys ever consider redesigning those!
I strongly disagree with the notion that a second core should be your first addition. You're clearly looking at it from the perspective of a devoted, veteran player, when you really ought to be stepping into the shoes of a newcomer. A deluxe expansion will unlock a wealth of new content for someone who still isn't quite sure if they love the game, or simply like it. 60% of the stuff from a second core you instantly toss into the garbage.

That is a tough question Manny, they are all excellent. One thing to consider is which investigators you want, but if you could only get one expansion we recommend Dunwich Legacy!
Still trying to figure this whole thing out... so I have a core set otw, but when I buy a cycle do I get to add some of those cards to my deck and then carry those cards onto the next adventure (cycle) with me? Or do I just use my core deck and play through the cycles with it and I don’t carry forward cards from say the first expansion into the second expansion?
Great question Yen. At any time you can use any of the investigator cards you have. The only cards that are cycle specific are the encounter decks and agenda / act cards!

Every faction gets 1x of their cards, and you can run 2x in a deck. That's the main reason. Those cards are still critical to this day, years later, so having 2x available makes your decks way better (and way more capable of actually succeeding at Arkham!)

Interest is piquing in getting into the Arkham Horror LCG and just finished watching your video. The products that I didn't see mentioned are Investigator Starter Decks. Assuming these just released this year. Do you still recommend getting a 2nd Core Box for 3-4 players or would these new starter decks negate the need to do so?
Excellent question! Those investigator decks are the best way to start, undoubtedly. It may well remove the need for a second Core Box, but we don't know the full components yet so it's hard to say.
I'm jumping in new to the LCG scene-tugged between Arkham Horror and Lord of the Rings-and this is so helpful! I wish I could find one for LotR, but this alone is great for structure. Thank you for this!!
In short, I would say Lord of the Rings LCG is much more complex, both from a gameplay and deckbuilding point of view. But both are amazing (I own both) and very different.
The new release policy surely helps! I loved the revised core set and I think I won't even bother trying to chase all the deluxe boxes/mythos packs and just wait as they rerelease them.
I'm glad to see you doing more Arkham horror content as I enjoy the game but I hate fantasy flights 2+ core box system. There is very little deck building options in just a core for two people.
All the cycles go in and out, usually on a 6 month reprint schedule. When they show up again, best to jump on them! Arkham demand is super high right now, and supply is very, very low.
Why is it so hard to find after-market chaos tokens? I have seen lots of investigator and doom tokens, but not so much the chaos tokens. I would think it would be better to get after-market chaos tokens than trying to get capsules for them?
The capsules are actually fantastic. There are a lot of chaos tokens, so they'd be expensive to sell and most of the time they're just in a bag. We suggest going with coin capsules for now - we may well make some in the future.

Living card games are basically the same as other boardgames with expansions.... except they have more expansions. How is that bad? You don't have to buy all of them. The only bad thing about the model is that you have to buy 2 starters, 1 set should be enough to deck build for 2 players imo

I've looked on some of the forums but lots of time it's posts by people who understand deckbuilding from other ganes whereas for me the whole idea is brand new (and somewhat confusing).
This is a great suggestion, and something we have done in the past. One foolproof method for deckbuilding is to put a deck together, lose badly, and then ask "what cards would have helped me not fail"? Do that a few times and you will get the hang of it!

I'm kind of new to this all LCG thing...
So, if I buy just one core pack and the dunwich expansion.... Can I play with more than 2 players?
One core set is good for one or two players. If you want to go to three our four players (the max), we recommend two cores. All of the expansions are self contained, you should only ever need one!
2 boxes is fine for 3 but a bit limiting for 4. I've played 4 player with 2 starter boxes and 1 dunwich, and we didn't have much deck building options. This makes your decks weaker, increasing the difficulty. If you plan on 4 players, you may want a 3rd box...or get another expansion (probably the better option)
Howdy, am new to Arkham Horror the card game. Found this video very informative and am looking forward to purchasing and playing.
On that note, however, I still have a question or two. Should i get a Core Set (or two), thereafter an Expansion, then the Mythos packs (etc), Do I mix them all into one "set" or keep them in separate cycles? If an playing a cycle, can I mix and match the entire expansion with mythos packs? Are they played separately?
Could you please provide some guidance on this. Perhaps you already have a video about this. :)

Watching this as I have a few spare minutes. Not really target audience as I have bought into it completely. The one point i would make, showing Return to the night of the Zealot with The Dunwich legacy cycle is a bit iffy as it updates the core set. The DL cycle update box has recently been announced. Tend to watch all the videos even if they don't seem relevant to me just in case they turn out to be.

Looks like a great game but unfortunately it also looks like a huge money drain. With 3 expansion boxes and having to buy six card packs for each expansion plus separate scenario cards you are easily talking way over 200 dollars every six months. I dont know the prices, but going on past experience i think it's a pretty safe bet that at the local hobby store each expansion box may cost somewhere close to $50.While each pack of cards close to $25 to $35. =(
The thing about cthulhu card games is that they're always so darn good.... i am a veteran of both the original chaosium mythos card game and also the follow up call of cthulhu collectible card game by ffg and still have my cards in sleeves all neatly organized in a plastic card box all these years later!!
Does Team Covenant make play surfaces/mats for the Arkham Horror LCG? That would be a cool thing to have.
One thing about Arkham we really enjoy, is that a new player does not have to frontload every pack. It is %100 ok to play as fast or slow as a person wants, and grab a new box or pack whenever they are ready. If the Lord of the Rings LCG is any guide, we do not see these packs being unavailable for a long time!
Any chance you guys will do this with GoT 2ed? I know you've done a bit of coverage on it, but not as straight forward as this.

If I buy an expansion, do I have to buy all of the cycles for that expansion? Or is the expansion enough?
Every Expansion is the start of a cycle. If you buy the Expansion, you can play the first three scenarios of that cycle, which is a fantastic experience all its own. If you want to continue playing that cycle, you can buy the Mythos Packs for that cycle to keep it going with new scenarios!

I adore your tokens, all of them... except the resource tokens. There is something so satisfying about stacking those little crates... I'd buy them up if you guys ever consider redesigning those!
I strongly disagree with the notion that a second core should be your first addition. You're clearly looking at it from the perspective of a devoted, veteran player, when you really ought to be stepping into the shoes of a newcomer. A deluxe expansion will unlock a wealth of new content for someone who still isn't quite sure if they love the game, or simply like it. 60% of the stuff from a second core you instantly toss into the garbage.

I don't have this game yet. I'm a little intimidated by all the content. If I were to buy the base game, what expansions would you say is necessary to buy to get a good experience if I don't want to buy all of them?
That is a tough question Manny, they are all excellent. One thing to consider is which investigators you want, but if you could only get one expansion we recommend Dunwich Legacy!
Still trying to figure this whole thing out... so I have a core set otw, but when I buy a cycle do I get to add some of those cards to my deck and then carry those cards onto the next adventure (cycle) with me? Or do I just use my core deck and play through the cycles with it and I don’t carry forward cards from say the first expansion into the second expansion?
Great question Yen. At any time you can use any of the investigator cards you have. The only cards that are cycle specific are the encounter decks and agenda / act cards!
Awesome video! I’ve been meaning to play Arkham for years now. I bought the core set but never opened it. Why do you recommend buying two core sets? Is it really worth twice the cost? Thanks!
Every faction gets 1x of their cards, and you can run 2x in a deck. That's the main reason. Those cards are still critical to this day, years later, so having 2x available makes your decks way better (and way more capable of actually succeeding at Arkham!)
Team Covenant Thanks! That makes sense. It was the same with Netrunner 1st edition if I remember correctly. Hopefully the new investigator decks have some of those cards because I’d rather put the money towards new content and expansions if possible.
Interest is piquing in getting into the Arkham Horror LCG and just finished watching your video. The products that I didn't see mentioned are Investigator Starter Decks. Assuming these just released this year. Do you still recommend getting a 2nd Core Box for 3-4 players or would these new starter decks negate the need to do so?
Excellent question! Those investigator decks are the best way to start, undoubtedly. It may well remove the need for a second Core Box, but we don't know the full components yet so it's hard to say.
I'm jumping in new to the LCG scene-tugged between Arkham Horror and Lord of the Rings-and this is so helpful! I wish I could find one for LotR, but this alone is great for structure. Thank you for this!!
In short, I would say Lord of the Rings LCG is much more complex, both from a gameplay and deckbuilding point of view. But both are amazing (I own both) and very different.
The new release policy surely helps! I loved the revised core set and I think I won't even bother trying to chase all the deluxe boxes/mythos packs and just wait as they rerelease them.

I'm glad to see you doing more Arkham horror content as I enjoy the game but I hate fantasy flights 2+ core box system. There is very little deck building options in just a core for two people.
If I want to play solo, is it viable that I use only one investigator, or should I use more and just play all the characters myself?
You could do either, but some of the monsters are too tough to defeat on your own.

Probably not! The only time it would be an issue is if you are both playing investigators that pull from the same class.

All the cycles go in and out, usually on a 6 month reprint schedule. When they show up again, best to jump on them! Arkham demand is super high right now, and supply is very, very low.
Why is it so hard to find after-market chaos tokens? I have seen lots of investigator and doom tokens, but not so much the chaos tokens. I would think it would be better to get after-market chaos tokens than trying to get capsules for them?
The capsules are actually fantastic. There are a lot of chaos tokens, so they'd be expensive to sell and most of the time they're just in a bag. We suggest going with coin capsules for now - we may well make some in the future.

On every point you are completely wrong, Jano. Pay to win makes no sense in this context - it is a cooperative game. This is a game with components. We are not paid to tell anyone anything.

Living card games are basically the same as other boardgames with expansions.... except they have more expansions. How is that bad? You don't have to buy all of them. The only bad thing about the model is that you have to buy 2 starters, 1 set should be enough to deck build for 2 players imo
