I was in hospital 81 days had an awful lot happen to me so I stopped watching the nightmare as they were affecting me mentally on top of my anxiety and depression. No sense of responsibility. No decorum. No loyalty (unless it serves her purpose in the short term). No honor. No self-respect. I know her mother had to be overwhelmed as a teenage single parent, even during the times when circumstances were improved, and that Chantal's younger sister was born into a home life with more stability. I suppose their mother, who did Chantal a great disservice by rarely telling her "No" or sticking to any imposed consequences, managed the best she could in other aspects of Chantal's upbringing. Is Chantal's being such an all-around screwup due to nature, or nurture?
It's both, but you have compassion for her struggling mother so you can extend compassion for Chantal. She spends all waking hours trying to feel okay and that precludes any sort of long term planning. Hopefully one day she realizes that she didn't cause all the problems stemming from her childhood, but now it's her responsibility to fix them.
