  • New retroreflective backplates are being installed at signalized intersections throughout California. These retroreflective bordered backplates -- yellow reflective strips placed around the perimeter of traffic signals -- increase traffic signal visibility during morning and nighttime hours, as well as during times of power outage. Since 2019, reflective backplates have been installed at more than 900 state intersections. According to studies conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), reflective backplates have reduced late night and early morning collisions by 50% at intersections where they are installed.

What a great idea. It improves traffic safety.

I noticed this treatment on the signals where 101 meets 116 in Cotati. It works beyond electricity going out to the signal lights. The yellow-to-black-to-lights is an easier visual reference at all times.

I never understood why certain states don’t go with yellow painted traffic lights as opposed to black!? I understand black makes it so it is more illuminated supposedly… But yellow painted traffic lights you can see just fine… The backs of all traffic lights should be painted yellow…That way you can see all traffic lights and it is a warning indication that there are traffic lights ahead

Like so much in American politics, no big lobby supporting, funding and requiring universal traffic signal design leaves many communities behind. Spend "bazillions" on lobbyists' defense and debt spending, dimes on education and healthcare and peanuts on traffic safety. 😠😦😥
