Man....as a kid growing up in the 80s and 90s, I was constantly playing this game. And I remember it being a lot harder!
Mortal kombat 1 was the first Mk game I played on the snes in the 2000’s. I didn’t realized when I was a kid, it was first released for the arcadeDamn it was hard and Goro scared me with his growl and hard to beat. But have great memories with this version
The arcade version definitely was!

Sub-Zero: "Haha, leg sweep go brrrr"
As a teenage Genesis owner I remember going over my friends house who had it on his SNES and always bragging about how Genesis version had the blood code, but the whole time in my head I was like "why are the graphics and sound so much better on this version?" I ended up getting SNES for Christmas the following year and the MKII release was a top 5 moment in my gaming lifetime. Awesome memories of having tournaments with friends. 🐉
The good old days man🙂
Same here. The Genesis version leaves a LOT to be desired and the blood code doesn’t do any justice. I always saw it as a cheap knockoff that felt rushed and unfinished (both MK1 and 2)
those are opinions I mean SNES has better graphics and sound so i agree but some people love genesis version more
The snes character select music was on another level as well.
You can blame Probe for that. Come MK 3, Sculptured Software, who did all 3 MK SNES games, was commisioned to do the Genesis version of MK3, and finally a good version of MK came out on the Genesis that played right, and had actual speech in it, and a good amount of it too.
I remember when my pops bought this game for me. There was this Toys R Us store that sold the game WEEKS before the release date. I was playing that game like crazy.
My cousin called me while I was playing the game one day. I guess he heard the sounds from the game through the phone. He asked me what game was playing and I told him Mortal Kombat. He was like ooooo how the hell did you get that game so early. Don’t worry about. 😂😂😂 He was so mad
Wow, the sound quality and music is so much better than the Sega version.
No! Sega - Best!
@@user-ox4uh1qd9hThen you have some serious hearing issues, this version is close to arcade in music and sound effects. Matt Furniss turned a menacing soundtrack into a damned dance party, ruining that versions atmosphere. At least with MK2, he stuck to the script, not altering the music to what he wanted.
I own both SNES and Genesis versions, outside of the blood code, the Genesis version is a damned eyesore to look at.

The graphics were amazing for it's time...
TRUE
Indeed. Made me buy SNES
The novelty was that the characters filmed in video.
Generous use of the sweep, and for good reason! This game was stupid hard. Big props for beating it on Very Hard mode. Respect. 👍
Thanks brotha. Yes the snes version was very unbalanced and the sweeping was the savior🤣
My dad played MK1 on SNES as a kid in the 90's and now I play MK11 on Switch in the 20's
Sub Zero's SNES fatality reminds me of one of his fatalities from MK2
My friend had this game on Super Nintendo and him and I used to battle each other on Mortal Kombat. Those were fun times
I would hate when my friends would leg sweep the whole time....lol...great memories.
That’s when you do the sub zero slide or Kano cannon
😂😂right spamming the same damn move lol
At least Sub Zero has his own stance in this version
in the 90 s u could find the arcade version everywhere. liquor stores laundromats .
Daniel Santana local 7-11 where I grew up had it. They also had Street Fighter 2
Daniel Santana underground arcades too around LA
bowling alleys
Pizza shops
Even at a Dairy Queen. :)
Damn i was playing this game like everyday 😂 the good old dayx
R.I.P. Bi-Han
"For the Lin-Kuei"
Even as a kid I never thought this game was that scary. Goro was my favorite.
I loved this game as a kid in the 90's. I remember some of the fighters like Johnny Cage, Sonya, and Lui Kang were easy to beat because you could keep sweeping them until you won the round.
You just listed half the characters lol
2:01 MK2 style fatality!
these classic mk games were insanely hard compared to what came in ps2 and beyond
nattram Because the ai was cheap
I Still Play Those Games, Today and Every Day
Thanks to bad AI.
I'm 34 an i've still got my super Nintendo with all three of these games...ah the nostalgia
Me too brother:)
Is in it 4 games total for snes with mk3 ultimate?
@@gt_5.0_madness Yes
15:32 Ahhhh! _(Grabbed and Punches by Goro)_
0:06 - Damn, seeing that again just brought the memories flooding back.
I realised I probably hadn't seen that for over 20 years lol
The thing I loved the most about this game were the sound effects and the intro music like, raiden’s fly move sounds so funny but it brings back memories as well as liu Kang his voice, his cries whenever he used his fly kick or bisycle kick. It was just too good
Something Mega Drive version doesn't have
Thanks for posting this - the original MK1 had such a uniquely dark and creepy atmosphere that even the sequel never fully recaptured IMO (MK2 was a little too fantastical and over-the-top by comparison). Sub-Zero was probably my favorite character in the original MK1 - it pissed me off that MK2 invented a "storyline" where his character had died in the first game and was replaced by a more "sensitive" younger brother.
CraftySouthpaw mk 1 was like a supernatural enter the dragon
what made this game scary?
CraftySouthpaw his fatality is my fav mk fatality of all the games....
MK1 is the best in the series and u are correct the sequel did not capture the darkness and atmosphere, such as multiple copies of the same body part when bodies explode in MK2 thats just intentionally being silly, MK1 violence was serious.
Yeah I agree overall MK1 had a much better atmosphere than MK2, I also liked the design of the MK1 Ninja outfits better as well, and I was totally bummed out when I found out that Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero from MK1 had been killed by Scorpion, and that MK2 Sub-Zero was actually Kuai Liang, Bi-Han's younger brother
C'mere! = the original "Get Over here!"
Scorpion did say get over here in the original arcade game, as well as come here, but the programmers split his quotes between both 16 bit versions of the game for some crazy reason.
Here before the movie releases! Hyped!
I was 5 when I played this. Goro was absolutely terrifying to fight. He did so much damage and he knocked you back so far. But you kicked his ass lol.
7:32 hmblalalaaaaaayy
14:43 I remember when I was a kid my dad saw this and said uh oh now you got to fight the beast lol 😆. Ah memories.
Also it only makes sense to fight the great undefeated for 500 year 2,000 year old grand champion Goro in his layer so how fitting is that.
Plus anyone else notice those glowing eyes in the background? I remember playing shalon Monks which is by far my favorite MK game go Kug Lua 👍🏻✊🏻👊🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻💪🏻. He kicks ass. Anyway I remember being in his layer in that game and you finally find out what those things watching you is. It’s his demons. Just incase anyone was interested in knowing that. That’s what they are.
Who here during MK11?
This was my 1st MK, true klassic.
Played MK1 in the arcade first:)
@@megatron1877 Sick, I was playing someone yesterday and asked him what his first MK was. Their answer was MK11. They asked me and I said the very frist one my good friend.
Brings back good old memories.
my older brother used to play this game all the time. It gave me nightmares
Still my favorite MK even if the Genesis version plays way better and has the blood cheat! I also remember the SNES "freeze glitch" you could do on Goro so he can't move the whole round. XD
0:06 the way I treat my lil sister when she's sitting in my gaming chair
Way better than the Sega version... better sound, animation, voices, colors....
Agreed. The snes version was closest to the original arcade except for taking out the blood.
Holy fucking leg sweep, batman....
Im use to playing the arcade version tgat when i tried the SNES i sucked it's so different in game play!!!
Holy nostalgia 😩 bitter sweet
SNES version is near arcade perfect
Gameplay sucked though. That's the only thing that the Sega Genesis version did right.
@@rojastojas plus unlike the SNES version, the genesis has a game code that you can enable blood
Even without the blood, Super Nes still kicked Sega Genesis ass in overall gameplay. This game was not too far off the arcade minus the blood and finishing moves graphics.
Butch Essex I agree, the SNES version was so much more visually appealing. The only thing wrong was the character voices were a bit high pitched. The genesis port had blood but it looked nothing like the Arcade blood.
Butch Essex what!!! SNES was laggy as fuck. Mega drive played much better plus it had blood.
Blood makes mortal kombat...gonna side with genesis
The creators said themselves that the SNES version looked better, while the Sega Genesis version played better.
The Sega cd version has the Genesis graphics, but I did add more animations missing, a more gory pit, and the arcade sound track. If you can deal with the loading times, it’s the best home version of the original game on the 16 bit systems.
Arrivare a 32 anni.
E rendersi conto che i giochi che ti ricordi di più che ti emozionarono di più erano della Nintendo e non della PlayStation.
This version looks so good!!! If they had the blood and all that this would have been the go to home port back then
The lack of blood is the least of this port’s problems. The controls are horribly laggy, the endurance levels are super frustrating, Goro and Shang Tsung are way too easy and your projectiles actually disappear when you get hit, which makes absolutely no sense and is really annoying. The Genesis port is far superior.
@@HolyRomanEmperor90 The Genesis port is piss easy, Tsung and Goro are a cinch, Reptile is easy as pie, and the game overall is ugly as sin. First time I saw the game when my friend got his Babbages pre-order in, we played it all night, but I couldn't help but to think to myself the entire time, how ugly the game was, and how little blood came out of the opponent when you fatalitied them. Plus the music was all wrong, at least the SNES version had the correct arcade music, nice and dark, didn't sound like Tsung's Island was hosting a dance party (Furniss rarely wrote the proper music for arcade ports he did, which took a huge chunk out of the experience of playing those games). At least in MK3, he wasn't involved, and the port got the proper music that time, in the proper places they belonged in.
All in all, MK1 on Genesis disappointed the shit out of me, and outside of no blood, the SNES port impressed me by keeping the atmosphere of the arcade game, with the proper music where it belonged.
@@Bloodreign1and the incredible graphics of the SNES version. At that time I had never played the arcade version and I never thought the gameplay of the SNES version was bad and I still like it as it is, it is different but not unpleasant.
Sega kids complained about the controls on the snes but I was able to pull them off so I don't know what the hell they were talking about with the snes version "being lousy with delay controls". For the most part the snes has more frame animation then sega and most of the sound effects and voices from the arcade are retained.
Snes felt laggy compared to sega
I don't take sides in this SNES vs Genesis thing, as I wasn't even alive during the whole "console war" or whatever, and I played both versions. My take is that the SNES version felt slightly delayed, it isn't major but it's very noticeable and a little irritating. Genesis version has better controls (assuming you are using a 6 button controller). The reality is that Genesis didn't shine in the Graphics nor Sounds compartment, but it did in controls (unless you are using a 3 button) and the signature violence that Mortal Kombat is known for.
Which version you think is better is up to you, but you cannot deny that the controls were a just a little bit laggy.
I was SNES player back in the day and when MK1 was launched on home systems I despite me owning it on day 1 Nintendo deserved what they got with the abysmal sales figures ! But totally redeemed themselves with releasing the best ever home console port of MK2
I was the same. I rented it 09/13/1993🤓 Good old days of gaming!
@@megatron1877 I remember a legendary called Mortal Kombat release by midway ! Now under WB I do not recognise it !
@@KnightFallGaming82 I agree! It's no longer the series I remember.
Sub-Zero is my fave kharacter.
I played this in hope that a blood/fatality code was going to come out. It was never to be.
That would have involved buying a new cartridge.
Their actually was a blood code for the game genie, but all it did was turn the sweat red.
@@sinnedam yeah not worth buying a genie for red sweat
I forgot Sub Zero had a different fatality in SNES version lol. Still a cool one
Because that's ridiculous, no one beats Sub Zero
I do prefer the SNES version for the graphics. It is ashame they censored it, but I do like Sub Zero's alternate fatality here and Raiden's as well. Johnny Cage and Kano's fatalities however, don't get me started. They could have done so much better. They were going to use a head snap fatality where they twist it backwards for Johnny Cage, but they still thought it was graphic even without the blood. So, they went with the kick through the chest which is a joke.
Waaw ! I played this when i was like 7 and never made it until the end, i faced goro once. This is the first time i see shang tshung fight thanks
really?? i beat the game many times back in the day
@@scotttraylor233 yeah i was 7 i sucked
My memories of this games
Good job you the best and cool:) :)
Nintendo figured it's okay to kill someone in the game just so long as there was no blood or gore. That makes sense. They should have just left the game uncensored and even with the control lag it still would have had a chance at outselling the Genesis version.
I remember when complete this game using kano because his combo is more effective and easier than other character to beat goro and shang tsung
Impressive, very nice 👍
the leg sweep is brutal
5:47 He's just chillin'
Memories right here
Haha wow dude that was pretty mint. Got gyped on the steel thou... would pay money to watch you destroy the coin op. Many hours wasted as a kid playing this on the old Master System minus Kano...
Timmah Timmah i have lots if videos of me playing the arcade versions if that's what you mean?:)
Graphics are Very close To The arcade, but its censored. If it werent censured it Would have been The best port
Epic video
I have this Mortal Kombat for SNES. Man, if they would have added the extra voices for FLAWLESS VICTORY, and FATALITY. It would have been an even better game.
Sub zero é muito top. Já virei com ele várias vezes sou muito viciado com ele e com o scorpion. Gosto de jogar com os dois eu sempre ganho com eles no macete
Job well done!
Everybody means that the Fighters are smaller on the SEGA-Version... No. On the SNES they just stay higher at the Screen, the Lifebar is thicker and the Screen is cropped... SNES has a lower resolution and SEGA lacks on Frames... I own both Ports - they are different but both are nice to play... I would say - this is a tie!!!
Wow. The SNES was capable of voice overs? I didn't know that. XD
Rydia of Mist NES was too , the limitation was in cartridge space.
I miss this game
This was like the competitor with Street Fighter 2 by capcom.
How much points do you get if you were able to destroy the steel plate?
Seems so much harder back then hahahah
I remember more of mortal kombat 2 and trilogy were my favorite trilogy being on Nintendo 64 and also mortal kombat 4 was badass
sa me rapelle des souvenir ce jeu
Is a epic gameplay of mortal Kombat ~ -_- ~
I feel like playing this game again soon
7:43 Was Rayden saying thank you for my baby? 😂😂😂lol always thought 🤣 😂 so.
This was back in the good ole days when Mortal Kombat had that Big Trouble in Little China feel to it. Now it’s just too WWE or something.
The 3 storms in BTILC inspired Raiden's character
I always wonder how things would have turned out if Nintendo created the uncensored version of MK and fixed the collision detection and glitches.
The only things this port needed was blood, better fatalities, and better controls; then it would have been a no contest for the superior port between it and the Genesis.
Very true. The controls on it are HORRIBLE. Right now my opinion of the best port at the time is the PC CD-ROM version🤓
I can not hate this game I actually love it lol
the only one reason snes came up short was this game
Nice
This is still classic
16:56 Shang Tsung does the barn dance...
07:51 WAAYIM BABADA HUUEEEeee !!!
8:22 best idle character stance ever
Honestly I find this better then the genesis, the graphics and voice lines are much better. They even have the correct Shang Tsung Ending! The only things I don’t like are the stiff controls and the music is not too great. Oh yeah and the blood, I like the genesis version but in my opinion this is the better version
If they correct all of the issues you listed. Snes would have been arcade perfect.
Sega Genesis had the Blood Code, but the overall game on SNES was a far superior port.
Minus having no blood, this was the best console port imho.
You didn't have a problem with the control lag? I thought this game was eye candy but the control was terrible. It made the game almost unplayable here in the west. I thought the control lag really ruined what could have been an excellent port.
Best home port was dos cd port
Sub Zero before he became Noob Saibot.
16:57 what genesis version missed
Yeah, Tsung just fell over and burned up, no souls coming out of him. SNES did capture it, but at a slower rate than the arcade original.
I was so bummed out about that.
Goro's "Ouch"...
But we had blood
Genesis also missed "Sub-Zero wins" voice
i did not play this game yet but i will edit this comment when i play it
Me as a kid: Scorpion playthrough because ⬅️ ⬅️ 🅱️ uppercut was the only move set I knew
*Cries really loudly*
Mi recuerdos
I wonder if we’ll ever get a fan hack with with blood and Kano, Johnny finishing moves added back in. And with the response time adjusted. The Genesis version has gotten several updates.
I keep hoping.
Sure, the SNES version had no blood, but the sound and gameplay were much better than the Sega version. Even the "censored" fatalities weren't all that bad. Also, there's something I like about the tune after a fatality. Something about it seems so dark
Music 😍😍😍😍
SNES definitely did it better then SEGA GENISIS
Memories
Gute alte Zeit, ich war von Mortal Kombat 1- 3 wie besessen 😂🤣
You can actually freeze Goro and sweet kick him 3 times and upper cut him before he becomes on frozen
