    Hi I'm a t4 paraplegic I live in Australia I had a motorbike accident 3 years ago I fractured my neck in 3 places and broke my back in 4 places so my back is filled with rods and screws. I was told I will never stand or walk again low priority so no physio/rehab. And told I will need full time care (nursing home) I refused that and I am livening by myself I do my own physio and taught myself how to crawl again and now can move my left leg which is amazing seeing I could only move my arms and shoulders so anything is possible I guess if you keep trying. I suffered from a lot of uti's as well and I found that taking cranberry tablets 3 times a day and 100% cranberry juice and plenty of water have helped and have not had a uti for about 6 mths now!!! So that is my story and hope that helps. Cheers. Bruce. :)

    D mannose is the best. It works by preventing the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. It is recommended by Christopher Reeve foundation. I have my son on it, he has a T5 SCI.

    Good vid. I had similar issues. I started drinking 6-8 oz cranberry juice everyday which I use to mix in some soluable fiber and the uti's became far less frequent.

      Try cranberry gel caps....no sugar. Or cranberry concentrate from health food stores and mix in cold water with your fiber instead. No sugar. SUGAR feeds UTI's..........starve it with concentrate instead.

    Hi I'm C6. I live in Brazil. I drink two liter of water/day and started Dmannose and Vitamin D to improve immune system. Its been two years that I dont have any symptom of uti. Dmannose works really good for me. I used to have recurrent uti symptons caused by E. Coli and I solved it with Dmannose but recently in a periodic urine culture exam was identified advanced Klebsiella P. infection and I had no symptoms. Does anyone here know specifically about uti caused by Klebsiella P.?

      Thanks for the advice in this video dude! I hope you're well and happy :) They do suck, and seem to take forever to shift! Mine is gradually clearing up but it's always a worry when you still feel little pangs of pain throughout the day as if it could come back full force. I think I might ask for one more course of Anti-biotics once i've finished this one to be sure!

    Really appreciate your videos. I also use the D-Mannose. It's fantastic. What dosage do you use? I'm doing 1-500mg 3 times daily, and it's mostly effective. Methenamine is the other one? Have you had your bladder Botoxed? I did that, and with Myrbetriq, I don't leak, even with a UTI.

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  10 років тому +1

      Hey Jason, glad you like the videos! Yes, D-Mannose I take are 500mg capsules with 15mg of vitamin C and 200mg of cranberry. As I mentioned I take 3 a day along with 3 Methenamine pills. I tried to ditch the methenamine a few months back and just stick with the D-mannose but I had a UTI within a week or two so I decided to stick with it. Funny you mentioned Botox because I am uploading a video as we speak about this. :) It has been great for me but even with botox, I will leak constantly if I have a UTI.

    Can a uti kill a paralyzed person?

  • @shadycorbin1979
    @shadycorbin1979 10 років тому +1

    Is it just that time of year or what?? I notice if I go out drinking for a couple nights I'm more prone to uti's. I'm pretty early in my sci. I'm an L1 incomplete. And only bout a year and a half in. I'm starting to get into WCMX and will have my Mike Box chair in about a month n a half. And when I'm out doing that I leak alot. I take oxybutinin 3 times a day and try to drink plenty of water. Do u have any advice on staying dry while u r more active? Like I said, I'm early in my injury and I'm sure I'll learn more in time through experience. But, if I can learn sooner through advice, that would b better. Thanx in advance.

      @symphoniez 10 років тому

      Shaun Corbin Alcohol increases the amount of times someone needs to use the washroom (in abled body people as well). When I drink I cath 3-4x more (once every hour). No leakage.

    • @symphoniez
      @symphoniez 10 років тому

      I carry with me the proper amount of catheters and ziploc bags. If I am in bed I'll catherize from bed and pee in the ziploc bag. I empty it in the morning. If I can't access the washroom to empty I'll ask someone to empty it for me. They understand since the place isn't accessible for wheelchairs. Use two ziplocs to prevent any possibility of holes occurring.

    C6 Quadriplegic Incomplete: Until I was 20 I had UTI's much like you were describing here. It came to the point where it began effecting self-esteem and self-worth. With great discipline and study of my body, however, I have been able to stop these completely. I haven't had a single UTI for 3 years. I self-catherize around every four hours. I am on a 400mg dose of Sulfamethoxazole (Septra). I also take 2000mg of Vitamin D, 2000 Vitamin C, and a mens pill.
    I had taken Septra until I was 20 it wasn't until I started taking the vitamins (DAILY NEVER MISSING) when I started to have results. I double my Septra when I have a cold and quadruple my water intake when my urine becomes cloudy or when I am sick. Lastly, I always empty my bladder in the following situations 1) slight hint of AD 2) know I'll be out for long period of time 3) having the need to use the washroom 4) Morning and night no matter what I am feeling.
    I hope some people will find this useful - there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Water is your friend.

    • @symphoniez
      @symphoniez 10 років тому

      Paralyzed Living I noticed in your botox injection video you said you cath roughly 400-500cc. From what I've learned through urology that is an extreme amount of pressure you are putting on your bladder. Typically I am cathing out 200-300. If I get to 400 it's a dire emergency and have lots of AD. Just might be idea to cath sooner and you may have less leakage because that is quite a bit of pressure.

      Being female it is imperative that you wash well before/after using a cath. Also, if you have an active sex life, that also brings on UTI's for us girls. I had them before my paralysis and it was sexually related according to my DR. Wish you well. Use cranberry gel caplets 2x's a day and ocassionaly use a distilled water/sodium mix irrigation using a sterile disposable cath tube if you do self cathing as your method.

      The protocol is twice a day. 1 gram methenamine with 1000 Vitamin C. I use 1000 mg Emergen-C. It makes more sense to enter fluid into your bladder and kidneys rather than using a vitamin C pill that needs to be filtered through your blood steam.

    Great video series, tyvm for sharing. Couple questions: how long can you go overnight between cathing? i cannot imagine having to go 6-7 x day. Cost of catheters alone. And of course it would take awhile to change over drinking habits. I imagine it takes time for your bladder to expand over time so you are not leaking constantly...trying to figure out that happy medium myself. I leak mostly from external sources ie bending over or full bowel for example. How much water do you drink a day?

    I am a big fan of your videos, but this one not so much. I am VERY against any pharmaceutical drugs. I (t5 complete) have been very fortunate with the uti issue, i just make sure plenty of water and really focus on what your doing during the cathing process and your golden. I do agree that uti's are the worst thing EVER, I may start adding some cranberry juice to the mix just to be diligent.

    • @ParalyzedLiving

      Guess I can't win em all. :) To each their own though. I just wanted to share what works for me. I was really trying hard to be as clean as possible while cathing and just seem to be prone to UTI's more than other paras I know. Methenamine is the only script I take for this and the D-Mannose with cranberry is more of a vitamin. I agree though that pharmaceutical drugs I can take the better.

    C6 incomplete 32 years this year. Up until 4 years ago I had a bladder stimulator. No UTIs with that system. Been doing I/Cs since 2015. I must be very lucky as still no UTI. I Cath every 4 hrs or so, I can Cath anything up to a litre quite easily. The only thing I swear by is a few beers each night. My health is very good, never been back to hospital for anything other than rewire of my stimulator in 2002 . So I thoroughly recommend the 2 pints a night technique 😂🤣😂

    how often do you cath? they have me on a every 4hr schedule and I still put out 6-900cc bc I drink so much water!! I dont leak at all....I cant go unless I cath :-(

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  9 років тому +1

      +James M Beilfuss II It depends on how much I drink...anywhere from 1.5-5 hours. Once you get to know your body better you won't have to do it on a schedule. If you are putting out that much volume I suggest going more often. Usually 400CCs is the ideal amount.

    • @MuskyHunter43

      Mason Ellis I've been T6 for a week shy of 4 months and if you cannot feel your bladder, then I would cath every 2-4 hrs unless your drinking more then you cath more. Thats all I feel is a fullness so I know regardless of how much I drink if I feel pressure I cath. And some words of wisdom that were passed on to me, whatever you drink follow it up with same amount of water. That helps reduce tge number of UTIs! GOD BLESS!!!

    • @masonx54
      @masonx54 8 років тому

      +James M Beilfuss II I've been a C5 for one year and I was cathing every 4 hours and went to every five hours. Eventually, I will be cathing every six hours. If you are experiencing a UTI, I suggest catheterizing more often.

    hey Brian, how are you I got a question to ask you what does it mean when a catheter only goes in half way but once you remove it out you start leaking and a lol blood comes out . I don't know if it means uti or kidney infection for kidney stones I really don't know. or maybe it's because I have a hard time using # 2 ? I don't know ..

    • @ParalyzedLiving
      @ParalyzedLiving  9 років тому

      +Abdulhameed Gellani Usually that's a sign of a bladder infection. It could also mean that you have some blockage in your urethra and the catheter isn't going all the way into your bladder.

    • @Sonic_90
      @Sonic_90 9 років тому

    • @simarpreetsinghmamik
      @simarpreetsinghmamik 8 років тому +1

      +Abdulhameed Gellani Hey I've also experienced that and I was told that I was using a less amount of jelly while inserting the catheter which might have damaged my urethra. Another reason could be a sphinctric spasm while inserting the catheter. The solution to the former is simple -> use more jelly while the solution to the second is taking muscle relaxants like Baclofin.

    • @fuzzybuddybay

      +Abdulhameed Gellani I've had to catheterize now for a long time, (T-7 paraplegic) and what I've learned is the sphincters in your urethra will either spasm, or just tighten up. You have to either do what the last guy said and take muscle relaxer or use your fingers at the base of your penis just into the scrotum to massage the urethra when you get to the first sphincter at your prostate, and BREATH. Deep breathing will help all your muscles down there relax usually. I was taught all this back in 1981 and it's always worked for me.
      If this happens all the time, you need to see your urologist and talk about alternatives like using a Foley (balloon) catheter or having surgery to open your urethra more.
      Try all the non-surgical first. Surgery should always be a last resort in my opinion.

      Yes, it seems to still be helping and there are no side effects that I can think of. I definitely don't want to get off of it.

      I've had UTI's occasionally since I've been on it but I think that had a lot to do with the catheters I was using at the time. I also take d-mannose with cranberry capsules. Not taking vitamin C but I do take a daily multivitamin.

    Brian, thanks for the vid. How does the UTI show when you have it? How do you know you have one? Do you feel the pain that comes with the UTI? Thanks!

      I know I am getting/have a UTI when my urine becomes milky and stinky. I also experience extreme incontinence to the point that I am leaking constantly. I don't feel the pain directly but I can tell that my body is in pain because my body aches and I feel very sick. That uneasy sick feeling is how I know I am experiencing pain/discomfort below my injury level. I get the same feeling when my bladder is too full or if I bang my foot into something.

      Dani S, I had exactly the same question. I have just been diagnosed with my first UTI after about 18 months following my T4 complete SCI (Transverse Myelitis). My pee became cloudy and had more odor than normal over the past few weeks. Additionally, I am also sensing a lot more pain in my mid-section (the "Hug" as some call it). I recently had the Botox injection (excellent!) so there is no leaking. I don't know if this is related or not, but my bowels have started to mutiny. I was fairly regular, but that has all disappeared. I once heard "happy bladder, happy bowel" and visa versa. So I am hoping that following the Rx things will get back to normal. Paralyzed Living thanks for the vids.
