- Ancient sports for children in Ireland's most ethnically diverse town.
Ballyhaunis in the west of Ireland is at first glance a traditional farming town, a place that in the past has been deeply affected by the emigration of its young.
But today Ballyhaunis is unique in an Irish context. The majority of children in the local community school speak neither English nor Gaelic at home due to waves of inward migration from Pakistani, eastern European and African communities.
The local policeman Darran Conlon has a mission. He is trying to teach the younger generation of these immigrants how to play traditional Gaelic games, not only to help welcome them to the community but also to simply ensure that the local club - the lifeblood of the town - can actually field a team.

Irony = British people in the comments, complaining about Irish culture being wiped out by foreigners.
learn from the mistakes we made
a lot of English became celticised over time, becoming more Irish than the Irish themselves. They switched their alliegence to Ireland rather then the English, so much so that the king had to re-invade 300 years later...so, basically to answer you question: yeah.
And Paddy said to Murphy "let's get rid of the British, then we can flood the place with turd-worlders".
You really need to counter the stereotype.
Irony = Irish people & lefties in the comments, complaining about British rule and migration yet being perfectly happy for Ireland to be overrun by Africans, Pakistanis etc. Oh and it's more than Irish culture set to be wiped out by foreigners it's the Irish people *themselves* . The British were genetically almost identical to Irish, these migrants...not so much. Well done on parroting the globalist line on migration though...Europe for everyone and fuck biodiversity yeah?
What would the main language have been in ballyhaunis 150 years manofthenorth
In 25 years Ireland went from tiny inward migration levels, to a foreign born population rate the equivalent to the UK. Essentially from a homogenous society to a multicultural one.
We achieved this without any rise of right wing political factions and , importantly, through broad acceptance , tolerance and assimilation by our people . This makes me immensely proud to be Irish .
Well the fascists are coming
People like yourself, are exactly the reason that Ireland is quickly sleep walking into a irreversible cultural, ethnic and religious transformation, which is already creating hostility and resentment amongst the poorest Irish born communities. The levels of acceptance and tolerance you speak of are not the experiences I hear from many people living in Dublin and Balbriggan (as a example). Free loading, globalist politicians have somehow managed to force our country onto a path of unsustained population growth, without any thought about the cultural and economic changes this will bring about. Leftists such as yourself may find my remarks repugnant, but let me just tell you this, fast forward 20/30 years and the polarised societies we see across the towns and cities of our near neighbours will be the norm here too. Mark my words.
What a fool you are. Irish will be a minority soon in their own country!
@@TheVote2010 leftists days are numbered they are inorgrant to the fact until its to late.
I spluttered my tea at that woman bellowing at 1 minute 52 seconds... #cmonhaunis
This has brightened up my day. Well Done guys. Keep up the good work. I am a proud Mayo man. hopefully some of these children will come to represent us in croke park one day.
Kinds of confusing with regards to immigration. What's it like today? Can you immigrate to Ireland and work right off or must you still wait a certain period of time? Why would you emigrate to a country that won't let you work for an extended period of time. Why go there at all?
I'm 100% Irish but I don't think I can live in an Ireland where a young fella says that he'd like to play for Mayo and Galway (12.48)...is this what 1916 was all about??? I dunno...what next, "I'd like to play for Kilkenny and Tipperary??" The young fella with the Mayo jersey should have slapped him there and then.
lol
Its great to see the diversity of Ireland taking part in these culture sports that we have. Makes me proud to see our Irish people of different heritage embracing Irish culture.
Diversity means less white people
The people who come on here to spew hateful and racist comments are full of fear and anger. I feel sorry for them for being incapable of seeing something so clearly positive and life-affirming as people from different parts of the world coming to a small rural town and finding a place to call home.
Listen to the accents, look at them playing the local sport and being a part of a community that is enriched by their presence. That is what it means to be Irish, and they are more Irish than anyone who claims they don't belong here.
"That is what it means to be Irish"
Cancerous civic nationalism. It doesn't matter how many times african kids play GAA they will never be Irish. Irish is an ethnicity tracing back a thousand years to the island. Gaelic. If an Irish kid went to an African country and adopted the local customs he still would not be considered a native. Same all over Asia. This civic insanity is only pushed in Europe. Crazy "progressives" who are actually completely regressive.
Jim Jones where are you from Jim? lets assume you're Irish although you don't seem to be. Go back 800 years, your ancestors have just arrived from Normandy. at what point do these immigrants become Irish? is it an expanse of time or through interbreeding or through adhering to local customs? you do realise people have always moved around the planet don't you? ireland wasn't always inhabited, people moved here and always have. and the movement of people to a place changes and enriches its society so long as bigots like you are in the minority which thankfully you are. its only that the last few years right wing pricks have become more vocal, you're still just as irrelevant as you've ever been.
you are the one that is destructive and evil, don't you understand that you are the problem?
Continuum fallacy. Ha you really are reaching now aren't you. You still failed to answer my question because you know you're wrong. Immigrants who came to Ireland in their hundreds of thousands over the past few thousand years are all now deemed to be Irish. That is a fact that you cannot ignore and you, despite your 'continuum fallacy' or whatever nonsense you try to spout.
You do realise that there is only one race of humans, the human race. We all share the same phenotype which means race is largely a social construct. The colour of our skin is in direct response to how close our ancestors lived to the equator and how our bodies evolved in that environment - you are aware of that, are you not? So what is it that you are afraid of being destroyed here, that very very pale people reproduce with other very very pale people so that they can have very very pale children? that is your big war you're fighting here? Seems like an awful waste of time. Why is skin so important to you, something that is totally arbitrary and irrelevant when it comes to what a person is like. You could just as easily have a disdain for big noses, small feet, tendency to sweat, shape of skull, kinds of eyelids - all of these traits are just as worthy as a standard by which to be prejudiced and hateful towards someone. If you want to preserve a 'country' (whatever that is) why aren't you going after drug addicts, gamblers, the mentally ill, alcoholics, white collar criminals? But you've decided to go with skin because you are from a culture that has developed in the remnants of a collapsed empire, and empire that used slavery and racism to control poorer nations on an industrial scale, and harvest the natural resources to perpetuate their dominant empire. Now that these poorer nations are still reeling from decades of abuse at the hands of western imperialism, are rife with corruption and degradation, inequality and violence, and many of the victims are looking to get away to make a better life for themselves elsewhere, people like you are putting your foot down because you represent the imperial power in its most defensive. protective over its ill-gotten riches and unwilling to create a fair society to include people who've been at the receiving end of that country's violent hegemony.
But yes, lets go with your idea. Lets grade everyone with their skin colour (we could use those paint colour charts you get in B&Q) and put the darkest ones furthest away, and the lighter ones closer to western europe and bunch them together that way, massive boarder walls to make sure there is no interbreeding and muddling of your precious skin colours, and see how that plays out?
Great idea, absolutely brilliant. well thought out
Its gas hard to know which is more alien to mayo the immigrants or hurling
Nice one centurion. ;)
I am from sligo which is very close and never seen a hurl in years here, plenty in the rest of ireland but not up here
Nice to see a witty good natured post for a change!
I have my reservations though. The people of ballyhaunis are making the best of it and fair play to them. There has to be controls on immigration otherwise there will be chaos
probably not guys.
It's not perfect and we still have many problem and challenges ahead of us (long term integration, security, combating racism, sorting out that direct provision shite, etc). But we Irish have faced worse challenges in the past: invasions, Cromwell, the Penal laws, wars, famine, more wars, economic recessions, the list goes on.
Still watching that lad at 6:30 reminds me of the old phrase used to describe the descendant of the Norman that invaded Ireland, they became "more Irish than the Irish themselves".
o'gubu has great pace, mayo should sign him
Outstanding short film. I love the part where the teacher says "who can tell me who Cú Chulainn is? Great story. Well done to everyone who took part in the story. Go n-éirí an bóthar leat * May the road rise up to meet you.
Thanks, heart warming documentary and learned a lot about Ireland.
What this touching video doesn't tell you that in the space of a couple of decades this trickle of immigration turned into a torrent to the point that Ballyhaunis is now a minority Irish community: "CSO figures from 2012 show that ‘white Irish’ people account for 40 percent of the town’s population, while the local national school, Scoil Íosa, has 28 percent ‘white Irish’ pupils among their roll of 322 children."
And do you think that's a problem?
@@qwertyTRiG Off course? Are you anti Irish
@Seán Ó Laocha you aren't making yourself clear, elaborate.
@Seán Ó Laocha I assume you have no issue with Mass multiculturalism and integration into the nation at the expense of native Irish/White.
@Seán Ó Laocha that doesn't justify it, that's a strawman argument and a weak one at that. The Irish who left either went to places who where racially like themselves plus not on there own accord they where slaves by Britain and America, they where shipped to Australia because it was a prison island by Britain.
wonderful video. I'm actually quite entertained by the ridiculous comments of the trolls, trying to come across all full of hatred but only succeeding in looking comical and irrelevant.
brian doyle checkout immigration the great non debate by lindybeige
@Brian O'Boyle ^"If I label someone's opinion I don't agree with as 'hate' then I don't have to refute their argument".^
Immensely proud! Phenom video!
People from other parts of the world are a welcome addition to any Irish town, not least in the West. But imo Ireland should always be the country of the Irish; and preserve its own unique culture and heritage (what's left of it). Thus, we have to be careful to limit the number of migrants.
I have no problem with people moving into Western countries and adopting our ways and culture and integrating with the place. I do have a problem with people who come here and don't.
When you look across Europe, it is becoming clear that we are importing the third world in large numbers and this is bringing untold problems into our cities and communities. I don't like Islam very much, simply because it does not like me. It's an ideology that is not compatible with the West. This concerns me.
Hardly a culture when non Irish are multiculturalising it.
I love that old man
Can someone address something that causes me major unease on reflection: where are the little girls in all this? Is the GAA only catering to boys? I remain really inspired by this beautiful video but I am now in rather some shock the absence of girls. I don't wish to see a Saudi Arabia -style enclave in Ireland!
sbranagh1
'Saudi Arabia style enclave" 😆 Jesus girls and boys have always played on separate teams (in all sports really like I'm shocked you haven't come across this before). This piece focused on the boys but I can assure you the girls are also out playing camogie and football. The separation has literally nothing to do with immigrants
Fine! Thanks for reply!
The filmmaker Maurice was aware of this too - that's for another film. The girls on the teams in Ballyhaunis!
Thanks also, Guardian! Girls, women in sport is so problematic in the Muslim world! Sport should be a component of child development everywhere. Really interested whether certain cultural barriers in sport for girls are encountered and if there is a way forward.
Absolutely beautiful video and so heart warming. Kids can teach adults so much about integration and mutual respect. Also, if it upsets the right wing anti-immigrant narrow-minded twunts out there so much (and their comments on this thread), you just know it's a good thing. :)
Gaelic Football is not an ancient sport, it was developed as an Irish alternative to soccer in the late 19th century. The Guardian is thinking of hurling, which goes back to medieval times (7th century).
Watch the video. There is both hurling and football in it.
Brendan Donegan
Gaelic football is hundreds of years old, variations of it have been played in Ireland for much longer than the 19th century. Hurling has also been played for thousands of years, much further back than the 7th century.
There were many many varieties of 'football' in the islands the 18th and 19th C....one variant was developed to be 'FA rules/soccer', another to 'rugby football'...another to gaelic-variety football. Gaelic football is however not as old as hurling, but its all irrelevant to your comment since hurling AND football are in the video.
Hurling in mayo thats probably strangest thing of all
Yeah, 'variants' of Gaelic football existed prior to codification in the 19th century to the same extent as 'variants' of soccer/rugby existed prior to codification in the 19th century. They did say 'ancient sport(s)' (plural) in the description so I just thought I'd clear that up. Hurling is truly ancient though.
Believe it or not this is not actually a good thing
Sorry, I don't believe you. It's phenom!
"""""""""""""""cosmopolitan """""""""""""""""
Care to explain your position further?
ihateirony I assume he means "we do see an issue with this"
Its not about race its about culture this is an exception but generally multiculturalism has proven to be a complete failure. Its a new thing here in ireland hopefully wecan learn from others mistakes ,but even if ireland is not racist there is no guarantee that the newcomers are not racist to us,Look at the north of ireland prothestant loyalists consider themselves british after being here for 400 years.A few months ago the travellers were given ethnic status we can not integrate white european christian cultures into our society never mind middle eastern muslims africans chinese .The GAA is all about the club they will get 15 out on a sunday hook or crook, but as one guy said outside the club there is little mixing outside of the club. When the native irish become a minority in the town will the club be still going no one knows the answer.
Just watched this, that the my ireland
Yeah showing little kids getting along is good and all but is it little kids that are currently being let in? No it's fighting age men who won't be too quick to pick up a hurl.
Children don't see differnce as a reason not to get along. Imagine if adults could look beyond difference.
Shouldn't you be doing your job rather than wasting the contributing states' money by spending the workday watching youtube videos?
Yes they do and they certainly will when they get older. Your worn-out cliche never stands up to the test of empirical reality. Why is Ireland going to be different to all the other places the 3rd world invasion has been tried?
There's studies on babies that show they have racial preference, it's hard wired. It's actually parents who teach their kids to ignore their biology.
It will be even nicer if they will be speaking irish gaelic instead of that imperial language English
sounds like paradise. Shows that if the indigenous community want more people and they come, then everyone wins. But I unfortunately suspect that when an indigenous community does not want more people and it's forced on them by authorities that communities become unfriendly and everyone loses. People get on fine if you give them all the power to decide themselves. Everything this town experienced, when, who, over what time frame, what happened etc is worth studying as a model of success. People of that town should become consultants to governments. Such a waste if it goes no further than a documentary.
Great film and a wonderful depiction of the GAA and Ballyhaunis. Something like this attracts the usual trolls with their hatred and negativity because it shows positivity, hope and the benefits of integration. Ignore them, the people of Ballyhaunis should be proud of themselves!
Here here.
Well said Fiona.
Tank You Fiona, I was thinking about the same way... trolls gonna hate it ;) but I think this community should be shown in Polish TV as an egzample how to deal with asylum seekers... how to inclusive them into our society. Those Kids in Ireland are hope for better future... as definitely not are our bigots politicians who play hate and xenophobia as a way just win the election.
AugustusPugin shut up moron. nobody likes you and you know it
These shitskins are modern day planters. They'll be treated accordingly.
Great to see a small town getting a boost, and a bit of diversity. Might take a spin up there next weekend and see what the food scene is like. Dead sick of burgers and chips.
Yes. Diversity is so brilliant because we get different curries.
Who cares about the inevitable crime spikes and culture wars? We get nice curry
Say it with me loud and clear “DIVERSITY IS OUR STRENGTH!”
It's beautiful. It really is. And I am ashamed of the reactionaries who call this some sort of 'Irish cultural erasure'. It's immigrants abracing part of the culture in an effort to integrate... some of these people treat these issues as a fucking nail...
This is a more complex situation that mixing paint.
A majority of the people moving to Ireland are white anyway... Did you hear the list of countries they were talking about in the video? I don't get why it's on a basis of skin colour to you when people of the same skin colour don't all share the same cultural heritage and customs... It's just bizzare to have this discussion on that basis because it makes no sense at all. The majority are from Poland (122,585) and The United Kingdom (112,259)... and there's not even a million immigrants in Ireland...
How is this- a video of immigrants embracing a part of the Irish identity (you know... because they're living in Ireland with hopes of being 'legally Irish' one day...)- 'erasing their identity'? Is it not the complete opposite?...
Christ, man. Sort it out like.

People whining about immigrants in the comments, they're the only lads that will play hurling in Mayo, maybe they'll have a proper team then.
"My entire identity is based on ball games and nothing else" ^
How can 1 third of people dislike this video? Incredible?
Because it paints an incorrect picture. The immigrants are in the majority in that town not the native irish. The locals are making the best of the situation it trying to assimilate the new comers as they should be commended for it,but they are fighting a losing battle..
Why would I want to visit Ireland to see people that aren't Irish? Every Western European capital looks the same these days.
What?
Actually we don't particularly want people like you to visit Ireland. You're not the type we like so you have nothing to worry about.
He'll only ever be paper Irish and paper Irish isn't Irish at all
Yeah, I agree.
I just want to preserve actual diversity. Europe is diverse with a lot of different ethnicities. Celebrating diversity by making every single country a melting pot of people from all over the world would take away from that. Calling an African or Asian Irish takes away from the Irish people's identity as if it is nothing but writing on a paper, and not blood, soil and culture.
Native Irish will be a minority by 2050.
This is the future you chose.
Hellrazor.Immigration is a problem because usually they don't integrate or assimilate. Here how however is an example where immigrants are integrating,You can't get anything more irish than GAA and the fact that immigrants are taking part in an activity that is central to the irish existence is good.In most places they go directly to the soccer club or cricket club which is fine, but in the long term its not good and there is very little integration even from european immigrants like the poles in every town now there is a polish shop selling polish food.
hellrazor117 bet you're not even Irish
hellrazor117 Fuck off ye gobshite.
As long as there's no Brits, we'll be grand
'Native Irish' means nothing. A nonsense term used by simpletons.
Integration is a two way thing.. But educating the very young that mixing cultures is the way to go is a great start..
Does she work now?
Don't scroll down any further. This comment section is full of racists.
I find the best way to deal with them is just laugh at them. :)
With enough immigration, all Irish Nazi's will be made to hide in their caves by force. It will not be safe to step outside, no platform for Nazis.

Whats a 'racist'?
Benjamin Shepherd oh man you are spot on! I did not heed your warning, I read the very next comment after yours and immediately regretted it.
This is peaceful ethnic cleansing.
