Hi Jane, Your speech touched my heart!! I want to share that I have been practicing gratitude since last one and half year. Since then my life has changed a lot, I feel I am happiest person I ever felt of myself. People around me also realizes it and says to me :). It give me power to practice more and more gratitude. I also felt that it took away all my resentments of my life, I had and made me free to fly with my dreams. I also realized that only gratitude helps me to stay blessed and opens door for more blessings.
Excellent talk, she may be struggling a bit in her delivery but her point regarding using gratitude to improve overall happiness is spot on! And helps remove the victim mentality. Should be on a bigger stage in the U.S.
One of the best Ted talks ever ! Loved it. I’ve been practicing gratitude for about 1 year. And it changed your life !!!!!!! Wow! I’ve become more mindful and peaceful. 🕊🙏🏻🌈🦋
As a side note I recently took a course in Pastoral Counseling and what you said about accentuating the positive and eliminating the negative as much as possible in counseling is right on target. People spend countless years in expensive and destructive counseling activities because the counselor keeps going over old hurts and pain instead of helping their patients to look for the positive things in their lives and give thanks. Again thanks for this great video, this is priceless and free information that anyone can benefit from immediately, if they really listen to your wise words and take action.
Ronnie Mead my Neice is in her 40’s now. She even owns a masters degree. She have so many issues. Her job as an Editor is short and constantly changing. She is single and childless. She can’t even cook and very untidy. Most of her life she’s been going to therapy. I believe they ruined her. She is not a better person!!!
Im grateful to watch this video after 5 yrs posted ... I learn about gratitude... I wrote daily about what's new thing I learn or what should I do to make my self happy .. Thank you ! :-) stay happy
Wow I was listening to this driving home and stopped at a gas station. When I was walking out an Alicia Keys song “girl on fire” came on and I thought about how grateful I am for that song because it has always reminded me of how much I love my daughter and how strong she is growing up and becoming. Then I got back into my vehicle and restarted the sound on this video and the next thing the speaker said was that the gratitude could be for “someone’s art that inspires you” I couldn’t wait to get home and write this. Talk about a sign. Wow. Absolutely love it!!! Also this gratitude stuff is amazing I’ve been doing it every single day since last July and it has made a world of difference. My goal was to have a list of stuff I liked about myself when I had bad days. I’ve had a zillion great days and even the few bad days I find ways to be grateful for. “I’m grateful that I’m crying because it helps me appreciate the vast number of great days I have AND it lets me know that I have a wide range of emotions within me which is a good thing.” I hope other people see this and start doing it!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! this is the answer I have been searching for. I will practice gratitude every day for the rest of my life because I do believe that this is indeed the source of true joy. God Bless you and thank you for sharing, you have truly blessed my life today and for always! Much love and gratitude.
"Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Totally agree I work with clients as a coach and we always start from a place of gratitude. Gratitude has been particularly a key element in my recent coping with my mothers dementia and then passing away. I cried, I grieved and I was and still am incredibly sad about her death. BUT my grief comes from a place of grace love and gratitude so is easier to handle and I have learnt many lessons from it.
While I do agree with her about practicing gratitude and not dwelling on the negative, I think it is still important to understand the source of our trauma and then heal it with self love. So I don't think we should avoid the negative things that happened when done in a constructive environment.
Yes.....we need to look at the not so good experiences that keep surfacing in our being and accept them.....if we don't resist them they don't have power to penetrate .... And yes gratitude is itself a tool Nd also an experience .....you experience gratitude when u meditate for no particular objective experience ....you just experience gratitude 🙏♥️
I am a Psychologist and really rate this speech. Yes, this lady is nervous. She is making some sweeping comments but I think she does a great job of conveying the gratitude message. People are dubious of positive psychology and gratitude but it is (together with Mindfulness) the future of psychology. I agree that we need to sometimes look back on the past and make sense of it. It makes us who we are, we can't ignore it...but gratitude is something that will makes us feel better. Isn't that what we all want? Life is short.
I liked your mention of the fact that gratitude and mindfulness work hand in hand and are the future of psychology. For myself, I have found enormous changes in my own psyche and life as I have increased my practice of each.
***** I have recently begun to focus my spiritual practice on both mindfulness and gratitude. Would you be willing to share any resources (books, meditations, etc) that you use in your own practice? I am looking for practices, beyond the use of a gratitude journal, that actually activate the feeling (vibration) of gratitude; for example mantras, nature videos, but of course not limited to that. Of course, anything you share is welcomed. Thanks.
I am really interested in the point that gratitude and mindfulness together is the future of psychology and hope to look further in the direction you point out. Could you please tell me where I could find such information and insights? Thanks

Thank you Jane for sharing your experience and spreading the vibe of infinite possibility. It's as easy as 1 (Emote), 2 (Extend), 3 (Excercise) - Happy & Grateful!
"You say grace before meals. All right. Jane, you are adorable and loved your talk and sharing yr wisdom with us. Thank you, thank you ted, thank you you tube, thank you electricity, thank you computer, internet, metals, resources, thank you millions of people who lead up to this experience of me viewing and sitting comftaby in comftable home watching this and getting to know you.
I am grateful for my privacy, and for my unassuming nature, grateful for the quiet pleasures, like the smooth patterns of overhanging tree leaves, sunshine and shadow outstretched over a grassy patch as one walks home.
Wow!! A truly WONDER-ful & meaningful sharing of the gifts of GRATITUDE. Jane's stories touched our hearts, the information on brain science is inspiring, and the daily practice of "emoting, extending & exercising" gratitude & appreciation is such a helpful method to remember. We feel so GRATEFUL to have landed on listening to Jane's TED talk this morning. Cheers to finding, experiencing & sharing daily WONDERS, JOYS & causes for APPRECIATION every day!
Great Life changing speech ,she is very honest, courage& gratefulness to tell her story ,I am very grateful to her,for such a lovely message,Thanks to her.
This was done when we had president Obama. I’m watching it now in 2020 coronavirus America in October in trumps presidency. Seems even more necessary now. Thank you.
Very nice talk...........and the best thing is that everything she said or tried to explain came from her own personal experience, and she really seems like a kind person now....thanks for sharing :)
Well spoken about the positive values of gratitude and the need to practice it. I am sorry for your traumatic childhood .Keep helping your brother Toby and be empathetic and kind to him.. May God bless you for all the uplifting work that you do
I think gratitude is one of those important things we all need in our toolbox but a lot of us overlook gratitude I'm going to give this a try thank you.god bless.✌
Thank you Jane Ransom for your insight and for sharing your personal experiences. It has helped me to accept some difficult areas of my life that I would like to avoid and to see the beauty in every situation by focusing on and celebrating the positives in my life . I am grateful for you. P.S. A wise person once said all irritations are either a reflection of a part of ourselves that we don't like or something we are envious of.. I choose to focus daily on the positives: take away what I have to take from every event or situation full stop.
I am giving thanks for the birds again, they are wise, and I have noticed them above there many times recently, keeping watch, seeing sharply and showing us all the way of nonattachment. I hear them singing on the breeze and I am meditating on what the birds are communicating Maybe it is a simple bird nest call But maybe it is actually a friend if listened to, passing on The subtle jokes and comments advice that friends do. They are nonattached but they Are also willing to provide insight I am thankful that birds exist, what a great idea! I am thankful they see a very good spring to come
Thank you for sharing your experience. In my area it takes 4 months on a waiting list, to get counseling, if you don't have insurance then cost 45 bucks plus another 20. Now unemployed I know if I could have gotten into counseling sooner I would not have stressed out in the workplace. 4 months is a long time to wait dealing with crisis situation the family. Thank you for sharing what you have learned that works, this is free and great to know that it helps rewire the brain. Grateful to hear this today.
Wow !!! Very Grateful and thankful for this Ted talk. It is amazing how gratitude change life’s. I donpractice gratitude since about a year ago and my life has absolutely transformed. Love this, it’s my Hubbys Birthday today, what better day to begin emoting, extending and exercising my gratitude....thanks for this wonderful information 🙏🏻🌈❤️
A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath. It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; /Psalm 92:1/ In the name of Jesus I write this to give thanks to the Lord, from Argentina to the heart of my God and all who read this. Gratitude is wisdom and self-love. May the Lord have your name well written in heaven, Jane Ransom, to the glory of God and the wisdom you have provided to all of us. A smile is a form of extension of gratitude to the things that we have, to the people that we see. Also, when we smile, , let us smile while we inhale and while we exhale, for this is a very good thing to our breathing, in a physical way we fill it with Spirit (Breath of God) I don't know who will read this, may it be a blessing to your need.
A great idea - exercising gratitude... "Reflect, O people, on the grace and blessings of your Lord, and yield Him thanks at eventide and dawn." - Baha’u’llah, The Most Holy Book
Wonderful talk. ''Gratitude''and ''Humility'' are near extinct human behavioural commodities. Why is it so hard to express'' thank you'' for everything including hardship and sadness? I thank every morning when I wake up - I'm alive and breathing.
Love this talk! I really appreciated her honesty. Very interesting to hear about how positivity and gratitude can rewire your brain. I'm going to start a gratitude diary today! I thought she was great at delivering her message in an easy and accessible manner. :)
awesome! I've been practicing gratitude consistently for months (had done other gratitude practices in the past but it was more of a chore... fewer results). Anyway, it's been making a huge difference in my life, now I'm making daily gratitude videos... the obligation I've created for myself with the challenge to post a new video each day can sometimes deter from it... I find it works best when I share my gratitude because I feel inspired, rather than because it's time to post a video about it. I'm curious to know how it's been working for others. The general "attitude of gratitude" has made a huge positive impact in my life, overall.
To all those who project their negative associations towards the way this lady tells her story. Why dont you just lay that aside and listen open-minded/hearted to what she is trying to share. The message itself is more important than they way it is given / how it is presented. Why is it so important for you to vent/express your negative associations. I mean what do you get out of it? In what way is it constructive to anything or for anyone? Cant you see that (to some extent) it only tells something about yourselves... And not in a particulary flattering way. What does the mirror tell you, about yourself? (when you project your negative associations towards and unto others) Only you yourself can know, because it´s your own projections. Meaning it has more to do with you, then it has with others. ;) Instead of choosing to focus on the negative aspect of things, try to focus more on the positive aspects of things. The more you do it/practise it, the more natural it becomes an automatic way for you to percieve the world. See the possibilities instead of the limitations. Some might argue that constructive criticism could help this lady give/present her message in a "better" way. And yes, while you would or could be be partly right. Ask yourselves, is that really so important? Should she change the way she presentate things? Or should we change our way of receiving/percieving the message? The content is more important than the package it comes in/with. Even though the package/presentation helps with getting the message delivered, it is still the content which is most important. Don´t you think so too? A well-meaning greeting to you all, and a wish for a better tomorrow for all. Take care of each other. We need it, the world needs it.
If i where to answer my own question, about what people get out of projecting their negative associations onto/towards others. It would be, that they do it to boost their own ego, and to feel like they are more then those they belittle. But in reality we are all the same. We are all on the same journey in life, we are just at different places/junctions, and on different levels of understanding. Nothing more nothing less. But its interesting that to som extent, it is as though, that we are grown up and raised to do it. (An ingrown habit) From the time when our own parents gave us those disapproving looks because we did something "wrong" and dident live up to their expectations. In that regard and out of habit, so do we also project the same disapproval onto others. And as it is said in the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. People are in such a hurry to have a meaning about how other people ought to live their lives, while at the same time, they dont even know how to live their own lifes. Its a paradox :)
skytte71 Couldn't have said it better myself, or more kindly. Your words are as true today as they were a year ago when you posted this comment. I am grateful for thoughtful people like you; reminds me that there is hope for us yet. Negativity has no place in this space.
Wash away my anger water of life, allow me to see the divine in all... Thank you HaShem for all you bestow even the small things I take for granted most of all for freedom
Allison Raffel Requires some discipline and an attitude that it's important enough of a priority to try to remember and then put effort toward doing the creating of this, as a new habit. Perhaps I will start doing this and even make it a regular habit, possibly. Thank you for your comment, as it offers the hope in confirming what the speaker said; that it will be worth the time and effort because it works and makes a big positive difference.
Thanks a lot TEDx and Jane Ramson for this wonderful and inspirational speech. Thanks for pouring your heart out too. I raise my hand: I will be doing my daily gratitude exercise.
Wow that makes sense when she said dwelling on the past make you more negative. I just recently torn out a self-help book pages by pages out of anger since it told me to relive my past memories, and went into a depressive episode.
Thank you, thank you for this opportunity for communication. Thank you for saving energy, and for honoring Tao. Thank you, again, for refraining from harm, and upholding the philosophy of ahimsa, 'non-harming/softness'. By wisely placing the body, you saved energy without a loss of pleasure. This is the spirit of meditation thanking you for behaving in a way more conducive to preserving inner and putter sanctity and increasing kindness and good experiences in all life. Thank you for acknowledging the importance of cleanliness. Negative Ego Traits no longer hold sway over you. It is easier to live around you, thank you.
This is best done everyday with everything and it all comes back with interest. As it goes I’ve been acknowledging everyone for what they do. Thank you is so easy. Thanks for posting this. Am gonna show this tomorrow to a room of people who might take loads from this
I am grateful for the birds flying above us, seeing the big picture, that which we have passed and that which is on the way to us. The wisdom and vision of birds is to be respected. Although, admittedly, I have no orderly method to understanding the advice of these flying feathery spirits, I do try and I give thanks for that which I actually am able to understand. Furthermore, the role that birds of all kinds play on earth as aspects of the environment and as spiritual energy is integral and I am just expressing appreciation and intention that all be well and good with birds, intelligent and graceful co inhabitants of this planet. Thanks!
That was awesome. I had a gratuity journal for some time but got out of the habit of writing in it. Very grateful to have found your talk today. Thank you 🙏
Gratitude is the greatest force of the Universe.
Hi Jane,
Your speech touched my heart!!
How do you practice it ?
Can you please tell me how to practice gratitude I am confuse

Meaning it has more to do with you, then it has with others. ;)
Instead of choosing to focus on the negative aspect of things, try to focus more on the positive aspects of things.
God bless u
Thank you. Namaste

Begin every day with gratitude and you won't believe the way your life begins to change.

Every day write down 3 things for which you're grateful.
I love it... my parents didnt really teach me to say thank you but im loving it! Hope i can be teachable 🎉...
Thanks!
I appreciate the effort you put into engaging with your audience. It doesn't go unnoticed! 🤝
