Saw once in a shop chipped mug with a tag "I'm flawed but still beautiful" or something along those lines. Could be stamped at the bottom. Sounds better than "seconds".
I LOVE THAT! THANKS!
Well thought out debate, thank you for your thoughts and opinions.
GREAT video. I put a mark on my seconds so I know they are if I’m able to before it’s fired in the glaze. If the flaw is noticed after the glaze I will use a small sharpie to make the mark. I have a small area where I sell my pottery that I put my seconds and have a sign that says “Land of The Misfit Pots”! I love the saying and I always sell them!
Great points. I sell seconds at times, or they end up in my kitchen.
Well said, time is money.
Love this size of cup. How many ounces are you using?
I don't sell seconds*, because I haven't made enough yet! My plan is that next summer it'll be time for an open studio and seconds sale. When I mention it to customers they are very excited to both see the studio, work in progress, and have a chance at seconds. I plan to charge cost plus a flat fee, which will be about a 50% discount for me, but my seconds are, thus far, pretty aggressively obviously flawed.
* I have sold a few, off the defects rack, when people touring the studio said "I'll buy that, there's no reason to throw that away". Provisos and disclaimers provided they seem very happy to buy something interesting and different.
there is always a market for it.
Can you mark the piece "second" on the bottom?
There seem to be various glass etch pens on the market.
Yeah, I think that would work well too. Someone else suggested sharpie, which might work its way into the clay pores well enough to last but I'm not sure.
@@OldForgeCreations I use a diamond rotary engraver for adding initials and inscriptions, that would definitely work.
What wheel would you recommend?
Would you sell a plate or platter as a second if it is wobbly?
It depends how wobbly! The Diamond Core Tools grinding discs (the wheel mounted ones) are great for levelling the bottom of pieces, but if it was beyond the ability of them to stop it wobbling then I would probably consider it a second.
