when building to hold aquariums that hold 500 plus pounds, we add a board between the side rails and bottom and on each level. Cheap insurance.. no worries about sheer problems!

Wow, wow, wow. Love this! I am all about some pegboard, believe it or not, I was just thinking about that before you mentioned it. Super build, great job. Be safe, be blessed & thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻

Appreciate the good info. While I don’t see the screws shearing, with temperature and moisture changes, I could see shelves moving slightly down under large longterm loads. As you pointed out, you have some blocks leftover that could be added under the shelves for overkill.

I don't think the issue is shear strength of the screws. I think it would be, over long term, screws going into end-grain. With expansion and contraction via humidity, they could loosen up over time. This project would have been perfect for pocket screws. That gives long grain to long grain screwing. Just something to consider. Otherwise, great build!

I need to do this to get my shop set up. Regarding the center brace, another thing that it will do is help get rid of some/most/all of your twist/unevenness. OSB or hardboard would work just fine for this. I would like to think that if you were to use 2X 2s, it'd still working fine but with half the weight gone. Just a thought. Great job!

I built 4 x8x8 shelves like this for my shed. So far they have lasted 8 years.

FWIW, used motor oil is good stain or sealer for anywhere u might want "pressure treated" because of moisture, and absolutely in place in a shop

wow, OSB is more expensive than premium plywood in my area!

I built my shelves exactly like this. I built probably 6 of them. Two of them racked horribly after I got a couple hundred pounds on them. Trust me, they need cross bracing!

Good shelf design and build. I'm pretty sure those screws won't shear off easily, I did a cursory look at the strength of screws and they're easily a couple hundred pounds each and as a system you have multiple and redundant, so they'll likely hold up many hundreds of pounds. I'm still trying to stiffen those saggy shelves from the last video...but seriously... I am! LOL

@@SpecificLove7 Ah, Thank you very much. I've bought about a dozen of those plastic indoor outdoor shelves and I've been considering switching to building my own. They're about $80+taxes. I'm probably going to stick with them but who knows.
