After 25 years of following Mr Tong I never thought I'd see the day I'd see him bopping about in his lounge gear and slippers. You sir, are an absolute diamond. May we have a lockdown at least twice a year. Peace, love & safety folks
46 meself gents, out the clubbing game since around '04 but still like to listen to a decent mix on ere or the mix platforms. Surreal times all round, enjoy and stay safe ✌🏻
About a year or so ago Pete did a day time set. It was awesome. He even did a contest with Scott Mills to guess real or rubbish on promos. I was wicked!
I started listening to Pete Tong on the Radio 1 Show - Steppin Out on Radio 1, Friday nights in 1983!!! The show was fronted by a DJ called Peter Powell and Pete Tong & Froggy used to do a guest slot which often included a 'mix' which was a bit of a novelty at the time!! I have tape recordings of those shows which i have since recorded to mp3s. I have been following him ever since and met him in Pacha nightclub about 6-7 years ago and he was a really nice guy! My lockdown involves working on my own mixes for my own entertainment, so it's good to watch the master at work for some ideas / inspiration.
I used to listen to Clyde 1 (Scottish Station) and they would have guest mixes at 2am. Bass generator etc. Grew out of hard-core and moved onto trance and edm and light house.
Please post the old school pete tong from 1983 am into old school anything new and different to listen to these days Pete tong one of my top ten that always brings it
this is what makes a dj and producer! let the track play and enjoy the music! not like these new bedroom djs who change every 20 sec to an another song!! Nice Set
I agree, I took up mixing last year and I got a friend who does it too except he's exactly what you're saying, and he thinks the more knobs you can turn and effects you can add before every drop the better lol. I generally let the song play out and then just do a clean mix without letting the energy drop too much. That's what I like to hear at a party so Its what I do myself
I guess it's all personal preference. I like seeing DJs use the capabilities of the gear that they have. Hot cues, loops, EFX, etc. so that they're remixing live, and layering. The rapid mixing, and use of features above allows me to tell the story that I want to tell with the music, which I find interesting, as opposed to telling the story intended by the original artist. The cool thing, is that there is room for all of these approaches. It's just great that we all enjoy the same music.
Hes like John Peel, will probably only come off Radio 1 when he dies. Equally as essential too. No wonder he has outlasted so many others that have come and gone from the station.
Looking around his room and thinking "yeah thats a pretty sweet setup" Then my eyes instantly got drawn to the one item that lets the whole setup down. The CHAIR!!!
Yeah all mixed by a dj at wise buddah on computer. Well, it sounded like Pete mixed one of them the Spring 1998 one, CD2 soudns slightly dodgy beatmatching at times, whereas all the other comps sound too perfect. Plus certain atrnsitions with tracks that have extended outros loops etc. that are otherwise impossible. Just checkout his earlt MOS comps too for studio trickery, rather than straight up vinyl mixing.
When I was 18 back in 1992 I was tuning the old stereo in my XR3i too the one and only... Born 70s grow up in 80s and lived the 90s.... Thanks for your part in my greatest memories.....
Anyone remember his hot mix jingle from the 2000s - "No more than 2 people may gather anywhere without permission!" ...and here we are all these years later!
Used to love his Essential Selection albums in the mid-late 1990s. The artwork on the covers was great too. And his midweek hip hop show on Radio 1 too, just before hip hop started getting mainstream coverage. Some boy!
Friday Night consisted of; Chinese takeaway on way home from work.. TFI Friday with Chris Evens, Lads turn up with bevvy, a change of clothes and gallons of aftershave. Pete Tong goes on full blast and we all dance around like we're having seizures. Out in town (Aberdeen) then back to the flat for mad party and the chillout session. Happy Days :-) Now everything's gone a bit PETE TONG.
He has not changed much himself but his music is outstanding and I mat him in London 30 years ago l love him and all ways had a good night out his music made my hair stand up on it own
Gary Wilson - Hi Gary, if life is teaching us anything right now, I think it’s that’s it’s too short so enjoy it, if you can, go and see him. My father passed away yesterday and while today isn’t easy, I found myself reaching for my phone to see what else was happening in the world and could potentially make me smile, as always Pete has. I would highly recommend going to his Ibiza Classics event which seems to be annual, I saw kids 20 years younger than me and people 20 years older than me all getting down to it, it’s never too late. Stay safe x
I remember listening to Pete on Radio Invicta (not that kent one) which was a land based pirate radio station in Mitcham london back in the mid 80s, it called itself europe's first soul station. He did tapes for the programmes. Crazy to think that was 30+ years ago! and he is still top of the game... amazing.

I can WFH with this type of music with the head phones on and concentrate while this motivates me. Not distracting either in the same way that some thing with vocals would be.
Watching for the first time since it came out, this makes me feel very sad four and a half years on. I'm not saying there was anything remotely good about a global pandemic, or that lockdown was a positive thing to have to do, but hearing this again now I can't help but recall the sense of togetherness and care that characterised the very early days of lockdown, when this came out. A number of well known musicians and DJ's did things like this from their own homes, which provided a much needed lift and seemed to compliment the many great efforts being made to combat the virus and keep everyone safe. It wasn't long before the mood soured, the blame and recriminations started, and far from being a place of solace the internet became a hotbed of conspiracy theories, anger, and hate.
My memories of Pete apart from the UK legendary radio 1 essential mix broadcast , was my annual jaunt to Ibiza and the BBC radio i weekend down at cafe Mambo , serious nothing like those days , today , more so after they concreted over the strip , another time i was so lucky to have been on the stage in the front room at a Cream Liverpool new years eve party with Pete as radio one London handed over to the club to go live before midnight ...happy memories
Watching and listening at 4am on a Tuesday morning because i cant sleep (fell asleep too early yesterday) 🥱. Think i'll go crack open a beer, sit back in bed and just enjoy this for a while. Stay safe.
