    Izzy, I'm chuckling merrily. Your work is winderful...wonderful. (Of course, my pain medication may be influencing perception.) Your choice of music for the intro to this table lift is what started me chuckling. You're one of the greats. I'm reminded of my woodworking sensei Tim (the toolman) Taylor and his great instructional videos Home Improvement. He taught me to use a Binford 280zx with an inverted blue torque inverter to lower the head of the drill press to the plate, instead of raising the plate to the head. Now, when I attempted it, my cheap drill press didn't have teeth, requiring adjustments to be made by hand. Sawing teeth into the column was problematic, and I went through half a dozen hand saws before giving up.

    It appears your shop made it through the hurricane in fine shape. Happy to see that 8-). Hope the family and homestead are also still in great shape! This is another excellent build idea!!! Keep up the great work.

    Could be the best instructional video I've seen on youtube. I didn't have to fast forward once. I'd like to see the video on the drill press platform you built. I have the same obscure shaped table that came with my porter cable.

    Shop Notes 135 has a nice DP table, with a front handle to raise it. I started to make that last year, but blanched at the cost of the gears.

    This is a good idea. I was thinking of making something similar with a motor and chain running vertically with gears to the press and a reversible switch next to the other switches on the press.

    Nice idea! I am amazed that you didn't make a "shaft coupling" but welded the shaft instead. I think it would've been strong enough for that application even out of wood and would not create wobble. Easier to raise/lower for sure, thats a winner !

    nice job. now with that feature you could almost turn your drill press into a lathe and use that power up and down feature to hold a chesiel and up and down the work piece. Or if you make a fixed table jig you can now make dowels.

    At the bicycle shop what you call a chain union we call a master link. When i assembled my drill press I put the crank on wrong and i have to crank it backwards and left handed. Never got around to fixi g it. Making a gizmo like that gived me reason to set it right

    The connection link is called a master link.
    Chain breaks are reasonably cheap. Motorcycle shop or bicycle shop should be able to fix you up. The good thing is they work on chain saw chain too.
    I think I may have a few extra ones for bicycle chain lying around if you want one.

    Izzy, do you have a solution to assist the long vertical rack sliding around when rotating the table around the main support shaft? I am forever having to kick the bottom end of that long rack as it twists and jams in the bottom ring when swinging the table. Love to hear it if you or anyone else has a solution.

    hey just a thought, because i'm building my own. Add a dc motor i get mine out of old drills with a momentary switch or even a trigger from a salvaged drill

  • @danvalleskey

    Better to press those bearings in- bench vise- hammering them not so good. I suspect the chain would not need to be all that tight on those axles, especially with a wood center to keep them separated. The little chain fixer dude is a Roller Chain Connector Link. I have also heard them called master links. The shaft for lifting my DP table measures .559. Not sure I could bore a bearing! But thinking Oilite bronze sleeve bearings might be easier to file out to fit over my shaft, rather then trying to file the shaft round. Also- as you attach a table, think about the tightening collar. My table is not true to the drill head until I tighten it down. Just as hard to reach as the crank to raise the table.

  • @joshuadunbar4104

    I wonder if you can put a tensioner with or w/o a spring so you can extend the length.

  • @WoodUCreate
    @WoodUCreate 8 років тому

    I was thinking that it always takes so long to crank the table up, and with your configuration perhaps a bigger sprocket in back so that your 1 rotation in front is like 1.5 in back. You'd have to be more careful in finer adjustments but I don't tend to think vertically that it's a problem. Just a thought.
