  • Trawling Through Time: The Story Of Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Shipbuilders
Unlocking an Archive, to tell a Story:
    www.trawlingthroughtime.org
Cook, Welton & Gemmell was once a global shipbuilding powerhouse. During the 20th century it produced over 1300 vessels from its shipyard at Grovehill, Beverley, including fishing trawlers, tugs and minesweepers.
The company has since vanished, but East Riding Archives are helping to keep the story alive with the fascinating ‘Trawling Through Time’ project.
Funded by a £30k grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project ran from April 2018 to December 2019 and aimed to bring the story of the company to mainstream audiences. The work of 40 volunteers involved cataloguing and digitisation of ships plans in the archive, and also included oral history testimony from ex-shipyard workers. All of which supported the delivery of various outreach events & activities comprising a digital display unit, lectures, workshops, and a tv documentary.
The documentary was first screened at a special preview event at Parkway Cinema, Beverley in August 2019, before being broadcast on That’s TV Humber in November of the same year, followed by its publication on DVD for sale at Beverley Tourist Information Centre.
Now, as part of the project’s ongoing legacy, we’re delighted to make our documentary programme available online.
