    Betty always had the potential to move on, Magic Man did not. By Betty taking on his madness, and with it sadness, she loses that potential and in turn passes it on to Magic Man who is able to work towards healing. Only after reverting to her prime state in the guts of Golb is she able to reclaim that potential.

    I thought that crab was specifically a coconut crab. Coconut crabs can't swim on their own once they reach adulthood. They all start out living in water and being able to swim, but if they attempt to swim as an adult they drown. As Betty became accustomed to Ooo, she forgot her metaphorical floaties (what was originally important to her - Simon's company) and drowned, just as Simon once did. I think that's why Simon is the crab at the end, since he also drowned once magic consumed him. Think of it as his corpse surfacing - it's also important that it's specifically Simon in the pool, not the Ice King.

  • @Electrosa
    @Electrosa Рік тому +513

    Ironically, I think the Simon crab also has one of the most straightforward metaphors in the episode: it's holding pearls of wisdom, but as you said, by the time Betty got to them, she forgot her floaties.

    The saddest part is that Betty overflowed with sadness but not with madness. If she did she could've maybe lived happily with Ice King, but because she couldn't becomes as mad as Simon, she only brought tragedy to the both of them.

    This episode has so much to it it’s actually insane. This is just an example but the crab in the pool is a reference to traditional artwork of the Moon tarot (which is referenced again in the next season so I think it’s likely the writers knew of it). It depicts a crab or lobster rising from a body of water. This represents the abyss that is the subconscious mind, an unknown mystery - the “loomy gloom”. Betty’s mind snaps when she hears the crab speak, as her intellect succumbs to madness.

    Edit: also, In the “flashback” we can see that magic mans iconic outfit is in an undamaged state as opposed to how it usually looks, tattered & worn. It isn’t until after M.A.R.G.L.E.S. attacks him on Olympus Mons do we see his clothes in the state that we normally see him in. Minus the fact that this is cartoon & most characters have a static outfit, I like to think that the writers threw that in there to show that he never actually took the outfit off, & that maybe it means something to him.

    I think the crab in the pool might be connected to “The Moon” tarot card because many depictions of the card show a lobster like creature emerging from water. Its plausible because the show does take heavy inspiration from tarot in the “Stakes” miniseries. • @ved2360
    @ved2360 Рік тому +16

    From what fans have put together about the Adventure Time universe, it's apparent that reality is at least partly mental. That is, the universe is a product of the Collective Imagination of all beings in the universe. (Basically a form of Idealism.) This includes the various god-like entities like Golb or the Lich, scarily enough, who along with other primordial beings, somehow came to a mutual consent on the current state of the universe by some chance.
    This means, in a sense, that the fabric reality is a shared dream and you can alter the contents of the dream by willing it, so long as there's enough magic in the world to make it malleable. You can simply ignore physical laws. But doing this actually requires a certain awareness of the true metaphysical nature of reality _or_ a psychotic disregard of it. Hence, why the madness and sadness is part of being a wizard. You don't understand that you're supposed to obey physical laws . . . so you don't.
    However altering reality in small ways is erratic and unreliable, especially if you're insane. So you need to practice even basic tricks, or improvise alterations with erratic results since your mind is either unstable or because the material universe needs to smooth over your alterations so it remains somewhat coherent with the laws of nature. I believe there _is_ a material universe independent of the mind, since reality isn't always elastic (or malleable), particularly in the modern world before the Mushroom War. So if you transmute lead into gold, the universe still has to square away the consequences of that somehow and smooth things out. (Where does energy and mass go from lead dropping down the periodic table like that? How does it go?)
    So that's kind of my analysis of why Betty and Magic Man "snapped" into this state of cosmic awareness. " Betty _refused_ to let go of Simon. A reality in which Simon can't be hers is unacceptable. So she rejects reality and substitutes her own. Maybe the "magic" somehow jumped from Magic Man over to her, but she needed to be an appropriate vessel for the "enlightenment" or whatever it is she found.
    This is Princess Bubblegum's core misunderstanding about magic. It isn't a purely material process. She _could_ scientifically study it, because its effects are empirically observable. But she tries to replicate the effects of magic _without_ violating physical laws and with a refusal to acknowledge that the universe in Adventure Time is not purely material. Perhaps it's for the best. She was a terrifying force as a Candy Elemental. She has a focused drive to subjugate everything around her, believing an empire in which everyone can be happy justifies any means. It was really her driving force as a wizard, when reshaping reality to fit her wants.

  • @ExtravagantEthan
    @ExtravagantEthan Рік тому +28

    Okay but are we just gonna ignore the “Free Magic Powers” 💀✨ Episode? Theres a completely different set of magic there. There are also a myriad of wizards in wizard city who haven’t shown signs of M/Sadness. I think that its more fair to say that there are magical powers innate and cultivated which come without sign effects. Ala, abracadanial, the Grass wizard, jake, most of WC. And afflictions like the grass sword, the crown, or the literal magical mental illness that was only able to spread through linking minds.
    So thats 3 forms of magic so far, in the Cultivated, Cursed, and Forbidden/ Dark. I love adventure time lore!!

    • @dane1382
      @dane1382 Рік тому +18

      Abracadaniel was featured in Betty's research on MMS, as were several other Wizard City inhabitants, so I think it's safe to assume most of the wizards in Wizard City are affected by MMS to some degree. The grass sword's curse did have MMS associated with it, as we could see with Fern's general instability. Jake may call himself magic, but he's half alien shapeshifer. With the Free Magic Powers(TM), the greatest wizards were all pretty sad. I mean, they were holding a meteor in the sky for hundreds of years, not even able to die. The frog wizard was also pretty erratic. Note that, as soon as the meteor, the source of the wizard tower's sadness, disappeared, so did all of their magic.
      I personally don't think MMS is a causal phenomenon. I think it's just that, for whatever reason, being a powerful wizard has a high correlation with having some sort of manic depression.

    Oh hey, it's a meme I made!
    Anyway, I have a theory about the magic/madness/sadness connection. Remember that in Adventure Time lore, magic requires the practitioner to become aware, on some level, that the world is not real. I think this could begin with denialism - a person experiences a great loss and chooses to not only disbelieve it, but to reject reality altogether - and this awakens their magic potential, but drives them mad.

    If every magic users have MMS (Magic Madness Sadness) in order to wield magic, does that mean Magic Man isn't magic before Margles disappeared? and Margles consumed by Golb is the reason he became magic? Or that he discovered magic in other ways then Margles disappeared right after, fully controlling his magic, just like Simon and the crown. Cause I'm pretty sure Margles' disappearance is the pillar of Magic Man's magic, like every other wizards like Ice King with Betty and Giuseppe (Crab apple guy) with his daughter.
    Plus Magic Man not being magic before makes sense cause he is named depending on his status, either magic man, normal man, and king man.

    I've watched Simon over and over in this episode, and it doesn't look at all like he's saying, "You forgot your floaties." Watch it at 0.25 speed. That's not what he's saying.

      @@GoodBrotherGrimm I don't doubt that this is what he was supposed to be saying, but he literally cannot be saying that, given the animation frames. For me, it's not clear at all, and I had no idea what the title of the episode referred to until someone explained it.
