I bought this game yesterday and hearing this review makes me seriously think there's something wrong with my cartridge. At 6:00+ you mention that there's few if any jagged edges, with often smooth FPS with just a few dips, and watching this video I fully agree, but my game is absolutely plagued by jaggies, to the point I can hardly make out the characters faces at all. My game doesn't look closely as "clean" as this video. Secondly, the frame rate in my game is abysmal. Everywhere. Except in the atelier itself. The town, the outside areas and especially the paintings. Oh my lord, the paintings. I haven't witnessed FPS this bad since the 32-bit days and it's 100% constantly bad and not just dipping here and there. Both watching this video and hearing what you have to say clearly makes me question my copy's quality. The game did made me install an update though and I haven't looked around if it could be the cause. Maybe made my game buggy or something.
This series will remain as my most favourite Atelier series. Character development for Lydie and Suelle is deep, engaging as well as fun and little serious. Core plot is basically the same as any plot you can find on anime or game. But since character development especially for the twins are deep enough, I can feel the emotions overflowing as it head towards the ending.
I imported the UK version for Switch because it ended up being cheaper than getting it in Canada, and I'm not disappointed so far for choosing portability -- despite its shortbacks, it does run better (at least from what I played) than the previous games on the Vita.
Jojo Stark It runs a LOT better. Maybe not PS4-grade, but definitely more than the last few titles on the Vita. Gust seemed to have had a lot of difficulty adapting its games to the Vita.
Great review! I've been looking forward to this one. Got stuck covering Monster Energy Supercross and just playing Farcry 5 lol but I'm looking forward to playing this one! Was a bit disappointed with the graphics but it looks like it takes some time to finish this one!
Great review. Just spent 60 hours on Ryza on switch and loved it. Really hyped for Ryza 2. But I haven't played any other Atelier before. The review says Atelier fans would love it, but would you recommend it to someone who only played Ryza?
this is pretty late but for someone who started with playing atelier lulua (the game that came out before ryza) and currently playing ryza this is probably a good game to play. there’s no time limit like ryza and focuses more on story and plot. like the video says the world is quite small, but i personally don’t have a problem with it. the mysterious series is a good place to start if you liked ryza, and i personally recommend only buying the arland series (excluding lulua) if you’re more into a hard game, as there’s quite a strict time limit in them! hope this helped
I only have a vita so I will miss this one haha oh well. Maybe I will eventually buy Firus instead. I love shallie plus and meruru plus on vita. Like your channel. I mostly play handheld. Also one of the twins orange outfits looks like a callback to atelier Marie/Elle/Violet games :)
The DLC is what bugs me... $60 for the game, more than double that with the season (though a lot of it seems to be alternative music tracks, and costumes that don't offer stat or skill bonuses) that I really have no interest in) pass, and even just grabbing the new paintings and characters (IIRC they were $12 each, much more than the extra characters and accompanying story content for Firis on either PC or Vita) sums up to quite a bit. Since I've yet to see any meaningful DLC sales on Switch I think this will be a PC purchase (despite preferring Switch to Steam, though it'd be no question where I was buying it if they released on GOG) so I can get the extra content at a somewhat reasonable price one day.
Lydie & Suelle Atelier is 40% off on switch today. i just bought it. its fairly good. But the amount of DLC's is ridiculous. want more areas? 10 dollar dlc each / 3 in total want more characters? 10 dollar each x 2 want costume or just a hat or a tail ? 3 dollar each like 20 in total. i would say the real cost of this game is 500 dollar if you want everything. lol.
I don't know why, but I've been really intrigued by this series lately. I'm looking for something unlike anything I've ever played. Just to be clear .- this is for the Switch/PS4 game "Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings", correct? For someone new to the series, holy cow is it maddening trying to navigate information for it... very intimidating series to newcomers. There are just so. many. games in the Atelier series. Is this a good one to start with if I'm feeling like getting into an RPG? Thanks for the review!
GeddyMX it’s by no means the best, or maybe even one of the top 5, but it’s a nice starting point. I recommend waiting for the Arland Atelier DX trilogy remakes to come out, but this one is waaaaayyyy less hardcore than those, and I find this game more relaxing than others in the series
SO FAR IVE ONLY PLAYED ALTERIER IRIS 3 I THINK IT WAS. NOW I HAVE A PS4 I WILL GET SOME MORE ALTERIER GAMES. THE TINY PRINT IS A BIG PROBLEM FOR ME BECAUSE OF MY EYE SIGHT. I REALLY NEED LARGE PRINT IN A GAME SO I AM NOT SURE HOW I WILL OVER COME TINY PRINT IN GAMES UNLESS I GET A BIG TV SET.
Great review :) Do yu think yu could enjoy this game without playing the other Atelier games? I haven't played since rorona and even then I wasn't into it much. But I love jrpgs now but also love story so would this be worth it?
There are some scenes and events dedicated to referencing some small events of Atelier Sophie and Firis, but overall, you don't really need to know the stories of those games to enjoy them. It's more the recognition of them referencing something that happened in those previous games of the Mystery trilogy.
Atelier is french. Pronounce "atel" like you would "apple" then "ier" more like the "y" in "yarn" with a long "e" at the end. It's not easy to explain. So many vowels and consonants sound completely different!
So is "ah ta lieh" the actual pronunciation or just how the Japanese VAs say it because they literally don't have the syllables in the language to pronounce it properly? (Like sayimg Gattsu instead of Guts in the case of Berserk)
The name Atelier is actually French and the Japanese voice actors do pronounce it properly (see also the town name Merveille, which means "Marvel" in French). Incidentally, when the game's title was originally announced in Japan, many media used the name "Soeur" rather than Suelle, soeur meaning "sister" in French (I wouldn't put it past Gust to have chosen the name Soeur on purpose).
I'm glad you enjoyed Atelier Lydie. Sadly for me its my least favorite in the series so far. It already started on a sour note by being a lazy subtitled only release, despite all previous games in the series offering dual language options. It also felt like a step backwards from Atelier Firis by going back to linear dungeons. I'm still playing Lydie, so hopefully the game starts to grow on me more. None of the new characters are grabbing me and when i see returning characters from Atelier Firis, it just reminds me of a much better game. Its not awful by any means, just not as enjoyable as previous titles.
Sailor Mercury not to mention reused models, and same expressive poses. The Arland series had more emotion and expressions in the character models, while this game kept using the same models and gestures.
There are some returning characters from the other games, though. At least from Atelier Sophie and Atelier Firis. But other than that, it's not a problem to start with this one. I barely played the last two (due to the time limit), but have no problem understanding this one.
Time limite removed? Yes! That's why I had such a great time with Atelier Shallie (that and the Bathing suits which I'll wait for Lydie and Suelle).
how is Shallie?
I wanna thank you for all the Atelier switch reviews you did, it helped me pick my wishlist of games! I think I'm gonna go for Ryza and Lydie/Suelle
Great review. I might buy atelier lydie and suelle for the Nintendo switch later. It looks really cool and cute too.😃

These games always look cute, but I can never really jump in.

ladyjaye27 be brutally honest with me. How "better" is it from the vita games? At least to shellie and Sophie in handheld modem

I just pucked up a used copy at eb games

Thank you for the review. Love how you review the more niche titles!
Probably gonna get Gal Gun 2 now and get this when it's a bit cheaper.
Love u

Paid about $22 for a physical copy it’s worth that. But not more than that.
dude I just found your channel and srsly your review is really good even compare to many big channel. So I'm you new subs now
I have Atelier Lydie & Suelle on Switch and it's great, but only problem is the textures, it doesn't look so good always... it's still worth it!
I’m Canadian. I’m surrounded by French speakers. It’s pronounced AH-TELL-YAY. End of story. Period.
At leer.
I wonder what DX fixed from the vanilla version of L&S
nice well rounded and fair review! good work

So is this different to the DX version that is on the trilogy pack?
Yes. This is the original version. The DX version is an updated/remastered version with a new dungeon, features, and a lot of DLC built in.

What's up with the intrusive flowery/paint border effects around 0:20?
Jamie S Not sure if you still care, but the border shows up when you’re in a painting world
Great Review, I was waiting for this, keep it up! 👍
How are the Japanese voices? I have only played this series with the English dub. Great review keep it up!!!
Great review :)

Ah-te-Lee-yay but say it fast lol I'm French and I guess that's the best way I can explain it
What about the DX version?
just get it on steam if you dont want framerate problems

Imma buy it

Isnt it pronounced ateliey?
I've played this game on my PS Vita via remote play from my PS4 PRO. The game looks a lot better then this game because of the OLED screen.
Do you have to play the first 2 games to know whats going on in this one?
Nope. They just make mention of the first 2 Mystery games in some character events. The story of each Atelier stands on its own, for the most part.
Thank you

Rather play this than shining resonance refrain
Man I dont think I will ever finish that game :D
English pronunciation is At-lee-urr.
The way you are saying it isn't wrong, but the English pronunciation is equally correct.
Narsheguard nope. Atelier is a french word. Pronounce it way It's supposed to, not how Americans who don't know the language think it should be.
"At-lee-urr" you have got to be kidding me.
工作室最棒了!
Does this game have English-speaking?
No English dub. It was the first game of the series Koei didn’t put a dub for in the West and the more recent ones followed suit.
Thank you for clearing that up for me
Guess what? The Psvita version is much crispier and it still look good than Switch I have both but vita holds it better
correct is A TO RI E you charge too much on the T , its like TOmatoes
It's pronounced a-till-lee-ay
You still messed up the pronunciation, it is pronounced ah-tell-ee-yay
