    My old baby! When I joined the Army back in 99 we had A-2's 1 and 7" twist 20" barrel. I never had any issues with it! When my unit was given the m-4 however that was a different story we had issues with it. The Army has a bad habit of adopting new rifles during and before conflicts. I personally prefer the A-2/A-4 configuration. The rounds seem to be more effective both in range and power. The system isn't over gased. It doesn't foul as much as the m-4. In my experience the A2 was more reliable. We had issues with m-4's shorter gas system. It got hotter quicker and more fouling parts wore out quicker. From what I've understand they since resolved the m-4's issues. But since fighting in Afghanistan is fought at longer ranges they should have stuck with the A2 and made the 77gr OMT standard round I think we would have been better equipt for the style of fighting that took place in Afghanistan. Haji used to engage us with Enfields Mauser's and Mosin Nagants because they knew the limitations of our carbines and our ammunition and our training with cqb. In Iraq the m-4 did fine cqb style of fighting but it still had issues with dust and debris.

      As a Afghanistan veteran, with body armor and dismounted, the M4 was much better. You could collapse it, hook it to your IBA and if you were doing cordon and search and something or someone jumped... You could throw it up quickly damn near like a pistol!
      Besides, 98% of any shooting I did was with a M240, only about 2-3 times with my M4!

      The A2 was slightly heavier than the A1 due to the heavier barrel. Lower receivers & BCG's relatively stayed the same/weight. I served from 87 to 92. Found the A2's to be a bit more accurate and the sights were easier to fine tune elevation and windage. @@victorglaviano

      X-Ray Crystallography Dumb? Hardly. Uninformed on this specific detail? Yes. I will say that this is a good example of why folks should take everything they see on the internet with a grain of salt. It should also be noted that while Sootch00 does speak with an "air of authority" he has never presented himself as an expert in the field of firearms.

    • @makman1962
      @makman1962 7 років тому +1

      X-Ray Crystallography Well, he doesn't need me to come to his rescue. No, I feel like a fool for completely different reasons, such as enriching divorce attorneys after marrying high maintenance whores. And yes, he is wrong on a great many things in many of his videos. That certainly makes him ignorant, but not necessarily "dumb". I've known quite a few intelligent folks that were ignorant on one or more subjects and a handful of intellectually challenged people that were actually well-informed in certain areas. Personal attacks don't make for a valid argument, period. As far as his being cute, I'm not a homosexual...not that there's anything wrong with that.

    • @makman1962
      @makman1962 7 років тому

      X-Ray Crystallography I'm not advocating for Sootch00. I'm advocating for civility and reason. It's more than a bit ironic that you are a stickler for accuracy in regards to his video content, yet you don't differentiate between ignorance and outright stupidity.
      I agree that when someone puts info out there for the world to see, they open themselves up to criticism, especially when they are serial offenders. However, I make a distinction between the message and the messenger. Granted, I have seen him put out a video that displayed irresponsible and dangerous handling of firearms (and I admit THAT could be an argument for stupidity), but I have yet to see him put out info that is inherently dangerous. Overall, he's harmless.

    • @makman1962
      @makman1962 7 років тому +1

      X-Ray Crystallography:-) Well, at least you've managed to come out of your shell and tell us all how you really feel. As I already admitted to being a fool (as in stupid) for my costly misadventures in love, you haven't scored an intellectual victory there. Anyway, it takes a lot more than personal attacks from an ill-tempered keyboard commando to ruin my day, so sorry...you lose. I'm no believer in karma, but I'm sure your attitude and disposition will eventually catch up with you. Not that it matters to me either way. Have a good life.

    Regarding 1:31 for clarification, on the original M16A1 rifle, its barrel had a one twist along 12 inches as its stabilizing gyroscopic spin for the 55 grain bullet. However on the next generation M16A2 rifle, its barrel had a faster one twist along 7 inches as its stabilizing gyroscopic spin for the new 62 grain bullet.

    Thanks for the interesting video. I built my first Ar-15 about 15 years ago. It was in A2 configuration and i loved how accurate it was at the range. Sold all my guns in 2011 to finance move here to NC and i have just started a low budget Ar-15 build project.
    I am using a FMK AR-1 Extreme polymer lower I bought locally for $49.00 and i just this week received my lower parts kit from PSA for an additional $49.00 and everything fit perfectly. I live on much more limited income now so i need to stretch this build out over quite some time.
    Next month I plan on buying A2 butt stock assembly from Joeboboutfitters for $54.99.
    After that i have to make a big decision. Initially i was going to try and make this build as much like the M-16A1 I had when i was in the US Army in 70s and 80s. However after checking it seems A1 upper and SP-1 barrel will be a bit expensive.
    Palmetto State Armory has 16" barreled Flat Top upper assembly for $199.00 . This does not include BCG or charging handle.
    I would now prefer to have a full 20" HBAR for the accuracy at the range. Do you know where I can get a 20" HBAR upper assembly for about same price as the 16" Upper assembly at PSA?
    PSA does not have any in stock and it seems most companies gravitate to the carbine barrels.
    If I have to go with a 16" barrel will i be sacrificing much in way of accuracy out to 200 yds?
    I will probably do most of my shooting at 100 yds as my knees can not handle walk out much further
    to post my targets.
    Thanks

    That's not an a2 clone! It has an a2 delta ring & an a2 handguard, but an a1 triangle retaining cap. The main thing ur misinformed about is what an Hbar is. Hbar mean "heavy barrel", specifically used for match rifles. The a2 def had a thicker barrel, but at the top 6" (.750" diameter compared to the m16a1s .620" pencil barrel) to improve strength & reliability. Also, A2s di not have removable carry handles. m16a3s do. In fact, the removable carry handle mod is what changed the rifles classification to, a3! Then the addition of the KAC quad rail & removable carry handle changed the rifles classification to the m16a4 service rifle we know today. The only service rifle I know of with a 1:7 Hbar & meant for combat operations (not competition), is the SAM-R (Squad Advanced Marksman-Rifle). The heavy barrel w/tight twist rate stabilizes heavier match grade ammo & reduces barrel whip improving accuracy & are only Issued to Snipers & Squad Designated Marksmans. The rifle in ur video is basically an ar15 a3 clone, with a match Hbar prolly with a 1:9 twist ratio for 223 rem. & 55 grain NATO ammo.

  • @dphitch
    @dphitch 13 років тому

    Sootch, 1 in 7 is actually a faster twist rate then 1 in 12. It means 1 turn in 7 inches vs 1 turn in 12 inches. So a 1 in 7 or a 1 in 8 barrel twist in a shorter length of the barrel then a 1 in 12 and give greater rotational speed to the bullet. This works well especially in shorter barreled AR's and allows heavier bullet weights, those above 62 or 69 grains, like the 77 grainers that are popular for longer range competition.

  • @ung427
    @ung427 9 років тому +13

    Too slow you mean. 1/12 twist was too slow to stabilize the heavier bullets. I thought that the A2 had a fixed handguard? Also, I have a M4gery, BCM with a 16 inch 1/7 twist barrel that shoots accurately out to 700 yards with 77 gr bullets.

      +ung427 part of the reason that the M4 isnt good at anything past 400M's is in my opinion because the M4 with that 14 inch barrel could never reach the same speeds the M16A2's could. this makes you have to hold higher up because bullet drop would be much more apparent for an M4. not only that but studies in the 1960's concluded that the 5.56 became slightly unstable when used in a barrel shorter than 20 in unless it had a super strict groove twist rate.

    Probably the most important change on the H BAR Sporter is the mod to the bolt carrier. The rear end of the hammer opening in the M16 trips the auto sear, on this one they milled that surface away so a bolt carrier from this wont trip an auto sear. This was because ATF made "FA Bolt Carriers" into naughty parts if you put them in an AR15; though they've changed their minds on the matter now, and they are no longer considered "naughty".

They also milled the underside of the bolt carrier all the way to the rear so the bottom of the bolt carrier from the firing pin back is open. And they also put a non-mil-spec screw in place of the front take down pin. The Colt Sporter Match HBAR R6601 also came with two 20 round magazines - which were pop-riveted to a 5 round capacity. Grrrrrr...

    I love my Colt AR15-A2 and its 20" barrel. 400 m hits on a range target is no problem . In fact I am consistant with getting a solid grouping under 8" diameter with Iron sights

    the differences between the m4/m16 are next to nil. the max effective on a point target of the m16 is 600, the m4 is 550. the reason for that is the accuracy due to the shortened sight radius of the iron sights.
    when i was issued the m4 i had no problem qualifying expert on the range, at 500yds.

    my 20" HBAR A2 is 9+ lbs without any accessories. not a light rifle at all. Add another pound for the Leatherwood CMR and a few oz for the magpul heatshield and ProTac lamp (190 lumens brightness), and this daggone thing is around 11lbs. BUT, that's what I wanted. A 'do-everything' rifle. 5m to 500m. with my back problems, recoil with a 6lbs AR is too much for me, but my BBW (big beautiful weapon) kicks like a 22lr. I don't intend to clear rooms with it, I have pistols for that role.

    I've got one of those! It's from the preban days, but when Colt tried to self-regulate by putting a larger .315" pin in the front. Kind of a pain in the rear because you need adapter pins when using a mil-spec upper, but at least it's preban so I can put an "evil" collapsible stock on it and keep my "evil" flash hider in this repressive state.

    Thats the style I like the best over one's with multi position stock. 20"barrel and what the Diameco now Colt Canada's C-7 was based on for the Canadian Forces and we removed the carry handle and put on a C79 Optical sight by Elcan.

    Good video, but I'd like to point several things if I may. First, the rear flip sight...the smaller aperture is for normal distance shooting out to max, and the larger aperture is for low light shooting, and is used while wearing the protective mask.
    The version you have is an A4, as it has a removable carrying handle, the A2s have a fixed carrying handle.
    My unit was one of the first to receive the new A2s in 1986 while I was stationed in Germany. I carried an A4 in Iraq in 2005 on OIF III.

    the larger aperture is for up to 200, hence the name the 02 sight, for 0-200.

    You also get more "stopping power" out of the 20in. You gain about 120fps per inch you increase the barrel length. So 16-20in is about a 480fps difference, which is pritty substancial when you are talking about a small cartrige.

    I have the Colt hbar as seen in your video. It’s an excellent rifle. I shot it in the USMC. What is a good optic to mount on the fixed carry handle. I thought of Acog but they are super expensive. Thanks! Good video

    @mycaddigo Golden tiger and Barnaul are two laquered- coated types of ammo that are in new production, and I have broke an extractor on wolf ammo before... Also sometimes the primers in the Russian stuff throw crap down the barrel that can clog a gas tube...

    Sootch, I think you are a little mistaken. The HBAR was never used in military service. The heavy barrel is a civilian only feature. The military M16A2 used a "Government Profile" barrel that is much slimmer than the HBAR. The only part that is "heavy" on an A2 is the visible part past the FSB, while under the handguards the barrel retains the normal barrel weight. The biggest reason for the end of the barrel being made heavy is that during Vietnam there were a lot of rifles that had -cont

    Great info I purchased the same Match Target HBAR 1/7 over 10 years ago when I had money . Its still NIB but not for long . Now that im broke and old I have every day shoot and clean. From what I have read the 1/7 with a 20in. will stableize all 5.56 NATO loads better then any other twist ratio . But my rifle differs in two ways , a fixed so called carry handle and no flash hider. The first inch of the barrel is stepped though

      +Philip Edwards I have the same one, The other thing is the block behind the hammer that is pined and says Colt on top and can only use the slotted BCG. I think that was during the Clinton ban, You are right about the 1/7 twist. About the flash hider or compensator I don't know why it didn't come with one. Stay safe

    I didn't purchase the Colt A2 H Bar, however, I did get my hands on a Superior Arms S-15 H-Bar. Exact same configuration, different manufacturer. I love the gun. The A2 style, to me, is much more appealing than an M4 style carbine. Likewise, as you said, these types of guns make target shooting a breeze. 100 yards feels like 10. Can't get enough the gun.

    1. I believe HBAR stands for “Heavy Barrel AR”
    2. The USMC did not adopt the HBAR (as standard issue). The M16A2 has a “government profile” barrel which is pretty silly: same as an A1 barrel but with increased thickness at gas block and forward.
    3. The M4 has a 14.5” barrel, not 14.”
    4. The government M4s have a 1/7 twist rate just like the 20” barrels.
    5. M4s and 16” ARs can effectively be used past 300m.

    I had one of those. Bought in 93 sold it 94. Cleaning it was a nightmare. To many tiny places for carbon to hide, but it did shoot well. The Seabees' had the A1 until I got out in 94. Another difference is the A1 have full auto and the A2 had 3 round burst control....The Marines I talked to hated the A2
