“Geopolitical Catastrophe:” Max Boot on Trump, Putin and Blocked Ukraine Aid | Amanpour and Company

  • The E.U. tossed Ukraine a badly needed lifeline today when it agreed on an aid package worth 50 billion euros, citing Putin’s aggression as the primary threat to our world order. No such help is forthcoming from Washington, where Congressional Republicans -- under pressure from Donald Trump -- are holding up a bipartisan deal on the southern border that is linked to Ukraine aid. The Washington Post's National Security Columnist, Max Boot, warns this is a dangerous miscalculation. He speaks to Walter Isaacson.

    Mr. Boot- I live in a rural area, where many of my neighbors support Trump. I have identified a terminology idiosyncratic issue that drives these people to favor discontinuing support to Ukraine: The words- “Ukraine is a liberal democracy.” My neighbors hear this term & interpret it as “ a democracy that supports liberal (woke) ideals. They simply aren’t knowledgeable, & are unwilling to be educated about the difference between these definitions. Strangely enough, if I use the term,”Ukraine is a CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRACY, they’re willing to discuss support to Ukraine.

      As someone who knows Ukraine quite well and speaks Russian, I am appalled by the twists of American politics. Ukraine is a fairly socially conservative country, where affinity with the Republican Party has been much, much stronger than with the Democrats, until Trump and his wing of GOP started pushing the narrative that Ukraine is much worse than Russia and so we should just abandon it. There was quite a bit of admiration for GOP and specifically Trump until it became apparently clear that Trump is not their friend, but rather enemy.

      @Tamara-qd5dc 7 місяців тому +22

      @@Sylvie_M In our politically charged environment it seems that people need to know which side everybody is on. People on the right challenge our support of Ukraine because it is not the right kind of democracy and that Ukrainians protested (peacefully!) against the president who was essentially a puppet Russia, but seem to be OK with riots at the Capitol over transfer of power, while people on the left seem to care a lot about democracy and peaceful transfer of power, but they would rather support a religious fundamentalist society against the only democratic country with peaceful transfer of power in the Middle East. As an independent voter who fully subscribes to the liberalism as defined in the dictionary but not a "liberal" or "conservative" by today's definitions, I am in despair, feeling that I am on an island, alone.

Left unchecked, there are a number of entities out there who would love to expand territory by force. Only the concern of being opposed stops them. Putins Russia, by pushing into Ukraine, is just continuing the push they started in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea. Since the world didn't raise a fuss over that, they continued. Many people who have studied Putin list several reasons he wants to re-establish the USSR's former boundaries. So, if Ukraine falls, he is likely to target an actual NATO nation next. If that happens it will be US troops on the ground, with top of the line military gear, rather than Ukrainian troops using our 2nd hand surplus gear. I am a first-generation American born citizen. My parents escaped from Hungary after surviving the German Nazis then the Russians, which my grandfather claimed, were just as bad as the Nazis. They escaped during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. It's a sad case that most young Americans have no clue how bad things were during WW II and during the Cold War. It's time the Republican party goes back to the GOP party before #45. I've not been a Republican since Ronald Reagan. I watched the movie And the Band Played On, which was mostly about how ignorant President Reagan was about HIV/AIDS. I do believe he was a great international leader. I also believe he was a good example of the old GOP. Today's GOP is filled with hate, ignorance, and phobias. The TRUE Republicans are or have quit in congress or not seeking re-election. My hats off to Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, and Mitt Romney are just a few great Republicans who are gone because they will not bow down to a tyrantrical #45!
    I am proud to have become a Democrat after voting for Reagan twice. The other issue young people on both sides of the aisle seem to forget is the TYPE of government we are. We are a Republic Government with strong beliefs in Democracy.
    ALL 8th graders should still be required to pass a Civil Liberty Class, as well as seniors in high school, as we were required to do. I've been out of school for 40+ yrs. I still have the full Book of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights we used in order to graduate. Use it often.
    A cautionary warning to they young in this GREAT country of ours. Learn your history of WW II. It took only one crazy fanatical tyrant, Hitler, to kill millions. That is why we must support the 🇺🇦 Ukraine or end up even in a worse global mess and possibly nuclear warfare.

      I do agree with most of your comment except Reagan. Reagan used Nixon's Southern strategy to run his campaign, he derailed Carter's hostage negotiations with Iran which later turned into the Iran-Contra scandal, he supported brutal dictator regimes in central and Latin America, was against Labor, was in favor of outsourcing of the manufacturing base and drafted NAFTA, levied tariffs against European imports on the other hand, coined the term "Welfare Queen", ballooned the National debt to new heights, enlarged the industrial military complex, was ignorant about the AIDS pandemic and it's science, was ignorant about the energy dependency to the Middle East, took off Carter's solar panels from the White House the first day, led a crusade against Free Speech in the music and film industry, the drug cartels in Columbia and Mexico who became the most powerful organizations during the 80s by flooding American streets with drugs, ratted out to the Hoover FBI members of his union who were suspected to have associations with the Communists while members affiliated with the KKK were left to excise their right to the First, taxed unemployment and credit card debt, was fundamental in ending free college in California and turning it into a money grabbing enterprise.
      There's not really much good to say about Reaganomics and his foreign and domestic policies which brought us MAGA. Trump, a Democrat before he ran against Hillary, just became the opportunistic self-centered, vile and unhinged gargoyle who was unleashed by what everybody thought were principled conservative Republicans when Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell and others granted his nomination. McConnell further aided and abated Trump until the end of his presidency. McConnell should have expelled him in the Senate in the second impeachment trial, but he didn't. Why? McConnell wanted the voters to decide ...The only real goal the GOP has is Rollback this country politically, socially and economically to the days of the Robber Barons when unregulated capitalism rained and eventually brought the world to it's knees in 1919 which led to nationalism and fascism in Europe but also has had a strong following in the 20s and 30s in the US which was led first by an anti-semitic propaganda by pro Russian czarist movement through Henry Ford's Dearborn publication and later replaced by the Nazi party the Bund and radio propagandist Father Caughlin. Unfortunately, this very important part of American history has not found it's way into public education. If Republicans are good in anything it's in crashing the economy and cheat in elections like Nixon, Reagan, W and Trump all have done before and support dictators who are willing to do their bidding against all fundamental rights Republicans allegedly believe in.

This war could have already ended, if ALL needed resources have been provided to Ukraine timely and in the quantity needed, which would have been much lower expenditures than we se today. Courage and commitment are lacking! Give Ukraine jets, missiles and all they need to end the war fast. Go hard on companies and private parties who keep circumventing sanctions. Acting like this will reduce total expenditures, set a strong example to Putin and all his allies, as well as save thousand of lives. Russia's aggressive actions around the world exacerbate the crises and poverty that fuel migration. Venezuela would never have become such a mess if Russia weren't backing Chavez and Maduro. Russian troops in Syria continue to generate tens of thousands of refugees, some of whom end up on the Mexican border. It is Russia that wrecked Afghanistan and set it on the path to four decades of war and millions of refugees. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has raised grain prices world wide, increasing poverty and the migration it provokes. Defeating Russia in Ukraine is an anti immigration policy.

      I think most Americans do see their interests aligning with long term global trade, but a smokescreen has been laid down that blinds Trump loyalists towards seeing global trade as a plus and support for our fellow democracies as critical for our continued success and prosperity. The decline of manufacturing centers has left a visual scar on the landscape, and when things were 100% made in America after WW2, there was great pride in the US and manufacturing cities were vibrant with activity. Today's manufacturing relies on compartmentalized global production where each country has a stake in the final product, but it's a concerted effort. So combining perhaps the losses in Afghanistan with visible scars in cities and towns, the reaction amongst some conservative voters is to recoil within and hunker down, even though that's not the answer. Right wing media and Trump play up the problems despite a booming economy, to stoke fears of further losses in their supporters minds, and Trump plays the "no more foreign entanglements" card, conjuring up the boom years of the 40's and 50's and the forever gone concept of isolation as a sales pitch to those living in faded areas of America. At this stage it's more of an issue of the effects of a shrinking Republican demographic clinging to power through gerrymandering and holding progress up in Congress using almost Mafia like tactics that's an issue. Considering that a little over 40 Trumpist Republicans in the House can hold up legislation in a body of 435 members, that shows the level of disproportionate power these obstructionists have. A divide and conquer strategy has been employed by Republicans when it comes to controlling Congressional districts, so proportional representation is skewered in favor of conservatives when the population isn't that conservative. Add the effects of propaganda from Fox, Breitbart, radio, etc. and the results are policies out of synch with rational thinking. If I were more cynical, I might even think that the big money backers are really globalists, but can gain tax and financial advantages by backing Trump. It's certainly true of some that benefit from isolationist policies, but most would not. Right now, team-ism on the far right has overtaken logic, so illogical moves on the global stage are more the result of ideologically driven domestic dreams rather than practical approaches to global problems. That will change in time, but right now we're in the midst of this struggle between superstition and reason. 🌄

    1.) he likened us not continuing to throw billions of dollars into Ukraine to us abandoning Britain in their fight against the Nazis
    2.) He cited as a key metric of how successful this conflict has been for the US that “we destroyed 2/3 of Russias tank inventory. So hundreds of thousands of men died and we got a good ROI on our investment because we destroyed a bunch of tanks? (Tanks can be replaced, people can not.)
    And the best argument of all
    3.) we need to fund this war in order to PREVENT China from invading Taiwan which (presumably would force us to enter into another war in order to prevent some OTHER war?

    • @Tamara-qd5dc
      @Tamara-qd5dc 7 місяців тому +1

      1) If history to be of any example, he is correct. We are dealing with an incredibly aggressive regime which is obsessed with anti-Western propaganda and inciting wars against us throughout so-called global South. If not stopped, Russia will absorb Ukraine and use it's resources against Europe and US, much like Germany and Japan did by annexing most of Europe, China and South East Asia. If Hitler was stopped in 1939, US would have not had to spend 4 years fighting a bloody war on two fronts. Remember what Chamberlain said to Britons when he came back after signing what essentially was a sacrifice of Eastern Europe to Hitler and Stalin? "I brought you peace". Bully does not stop unless stopped.
      2) Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian died because they know all well what Russian rule would mean for them, for centuries in the past and for a decade since 2014. They are dying to defend their families and their homes, not for us. It happened to be that our interests coincide with theirs. We provide weapons, they fight. Of course, US can say that it is not our war and quit, but Europe cannot. Russia will roll in, just like it did in 1945. If you think we don't care, you are wrong. Sentiments for Old World aside, Europe is a huge market, and we need trade with them.
      3) China has been aiming at Taiwan for decades. Why do you think Nixon allowed mainland China to take over Taiwan's place at UN and recognized their rights to Taiwan. The only thing that deters them from invading is our military support for Taiwan and fear of US response. Just in case you think we don't care about Taiwan, it supplies over 90% of world's production of specialized chips. Without those, US economy will stop. Biden pushed for Chips Act for a reason, to restart chip production in US and protect us in case we lose Taiwan. But the threat has not gone away. This is why the West must show force, otherwise, China will feel free to rein in Asia, which it has been advancing to do for a long time.
